New York City is so large and its telepl nie system s: complex that it has been necessary to div fle the city into zones. Each call to a nearby zone co: hts as one call. Each call to more distant zones coutts is two and it; some few cases three calls. The Opera br will be, glad to tell you whether any call you wish o make is a ¿me-, two- or three-call charge.
Dur message rates provide for'an overtime charge on a)l local calls of more than five minutes. However, we do not make this charge within the one-call range unless this time is materially in excess of five minutes At most pasblic telephones, however, the overtime char je is made Ou all calls.
Flat Rate Service
*The monthly charge for this service, which is fur- nished on a residence basis in Brooklyn, pays for an uslimited number of outgoing calls to poin's in a re- stracted area .. The Operator will be glad to tell you :| whether any call you wish to make is within this area.
HOW TO DIAL
If you are not sure of the number, look in the directory. If the number is not in the directory, dial 411. Dial the first two letters of the central. office name, the office numeral, and each figure of the line number.
Let's say the number is FO xcroft 9-9970. " Remove the receiver.
Listen for the dial tone-a steady humming sound. Place your finger in the opening over the letter "F". Move the dial clockwise until you strike the finger stop.
Remwwe your finger and allow the dial to turn back. Do not push the dial back.
"Dial the letter "O" (in black ) in the same way. Then 'dial the figures 9, 9, 9, 7 and 0 (in redl) in order, followed by party letter, if any, of called party.
When you hear a burr-burr-borr send, the called telephone is ringing.
If you hear a buzz-buzz-buzz wand, thaj called tele- phone is busy.
If you hear a Imzz-buzz -- buzz-buzz sound, you have made an error in dialing. Hang up for a few seconds anıl begin again.

BILLS
Telephone bills are rendered once a month and are due on presentation. When paying in person, please have the bill with you. Any tele- plione bill may be paid at any of the 'offices listed, on the back of the bill. When paying by mail, please send payment to the P. O. Box Number shown on the return envelope ac- companying the bill, or to the Business Office. Pay- ment should be accompanied by the stub. If the stub has been mislaid, please write your telephone number on the check:
Service charges are billed for one month in advance of the billing date. 'Out-of-town calls and additional local calls are hilled for one month prior to the tate of the bill.
DISPLAYING TELEPHONE NUMBERS
It will be a convenience to those who may wish to call you, and will help to speed service, if you will print . your telephone munber-on stationery and elsewhere Just as you do your street address.

For this reason every subscriber in Brooklyn is given a directory every six months listing all Brooklyn sub- scribers. A classified directory listing all business sub- scribers under business headings is also furnished as a convenient shopping and service aid.
Directories are also available for Manhattan, The Bronx; Queens, Richmond and suburban points. To give these books to all Brooklyn subscribers would be an inconvenience to most subscribers and a needless ex- pense to the Company. In cases where they are required, they are furnished upon request. | Otherwise it is better to get numbers fromp Information, and keep them on a personal list. PRIVACY OF TELEPHONE SERVICE (Extract from Penal Law.)
A person who wrongfully obtains, or attempts to obtain, any knowledge of a telegraphic or telephonic message by connivance with a clerk, operator, messenger or other employee of a telegraph or telephone company, or being such clerk, operator, messenger or other em -* ployed, willfully divulges to anyone but the persons for whom it was intended, the contents or the nature thereof of a telegraphic or telephonic message or dispatch en- trusted to him for the transmission or delivety, or of which contents he may in any manner become pos- sessed, * * * is punishable by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars or by imprisonment for not more than two years, or by both such fine and imprisonment. -
OBSTRUCTING COIN TELEPHONES (Penal Law, Section 1432-a.)

INTERCEPTING EQUIPMENT

TIME-OF-DAY SERVICE
The correct tinie may be obtained by dialing or afling Af Eridian 7-1212 at any time during the day or night. The charge from message rate stations is one loct mes- sage. From all other stations the charge is five cents.

People who have difficulty in hearing over the telephone may have a service that amplifies the voice heard in the receiver, : Persons whose hearing is normal may also use the instrument without difficulty.

TELEGRAMS BY TELEPHONE
You may telephone telegram's, cablegrams, or. radiograms to the Postal Telegraph Cable Company or the Western Union Telegraph Company following the instructions shown under its listing in this directory. The telegraph charges will appear on your telephone bill. You may also telephone your telegrams from public telephones, paying as you would for a telephone call.
CONFERENCE TELEPHONE SERVICE
A number of people, in the same city or in different cities, can talk together by telephone as if around a table. To place a conference call, or to secure the rate or other information regarding the service, dial 211 or call Lamg Distance and ask for the Conference Operator.
SEQUENCE CALLING
If you wish to make a large number of ont-of-town calls in rapid succession with little waiting between calls, you may file with the Company a member of calls at one time, preferably in writing. 'The operator will put through cach succeeding call as soon as the previous one is com- pleted. Printed forms for convenience in making up these lists will be furnished by the Business Office (Dial 811).
TOLL CREDIT PLAN
Credit identification cards are furnished, to |travelling representatives of business concerns, Telephone calls can then be made from any Telephone Company business office in the United States and the charges billed to the home office. Representatives do not need to carry cash for telephone calls, and the home office has information as to the telephone selling activities of its representatives.
OTHER SERVICES
Other services which can be readily supplied by the busi- ness office include hand telephones, black or in color, of the desk or hang-up type; extension bells and gongs : signal lamps; 'head receivers ; chest transmitters; out- door telephones ; paging systems ; house-closerl service : key-town selling and other aids to economical out-of- town telephoning ; and many others.
