. New York City is so large and its tele fone system so complex that it has been necessary to o vide the city into zones. Each call to a nearby zone .! junts as one call. Each call to more distant zones cour, s as two and in 'some few cases three calls. The Op ator will be glad to tell you whether any call you wi; i to make is a one-, two- or three-call charge; or a ard showing this information may be secured by calling the Bésiness Office.
Our message rates provide for an overti ne charge on all local calls of more than five minutes. However, we do not make this charge within the one-cal range unless the time is materially in excess of five mint ies. . At most public telephones, however, the overtime cl arge is made.

If preferred, resi lence service can be haj at a iponthly charge which pays for all outgoing calls wi in Brooklyn. Calls to other points in New York City' af i charged for at 5c, 10c, or 15c for the initial 5 minute + alling period. HOW TO DIAL
If you are not sure of the number, look in the directory. If the number is not in the directory, dill 411.
For calls that you should dial direct and those you should give to the operator 'see the zone card that has-been furnished you, additional copies of which may be obtained at the Business Office.
Dial the first two letters of the central office name, the office numeral, and each figure of the line burhiber ; for example --:

Listen for the dial tone-a steady humining sound .: Place your finger in the opening over the letter "F"! Move the dial clockwise until you strike the finger-stop. Remove your finger and allow the dial to turn back. Do not push the dial back.
Dial the letter "Q'! (in black ) in the same way.
Then dial the figures 9, 9, 9, 7 and 0 (in red) in order, followed by party letter, if any.
When you hear a burr-burr-burr sound, the called tele- phone is ringing.
If you hear a buzz-buzz-buzz sound, the called telephone is busy.
If you hear a buzz-buzz-buzz-buzz sound, you have made an error in dialing. Hang up for a few seconds and begin again,

BILLS
Telephone bills are rendered once a month and are due on.presentation. When paying in person, please have the bill with you. Any tele phone bill may be paid at any of the offices listed on the back of the bill; When paying by mail, please enclose the bill stub with your check. If the stub has been mislaid, please write your telephone number on the check,
Telephone bills cover servir charges for one month in advance of the date of your bill. They also cover charges for out-of-town calls and additional local calls made during the monthly period preceding the date of your bill.
DISPLAYING TELEPHONE NUMBERS
It will be a convenience to those who may wish to call you, and will help, to speed service, if you will print your telephone number on stationery and elsewhere just" as you do your street address.
Although we cannot guarantee that any number will be permanent, we make no changes in numbers' except when the needs of the telephone system itself make it essential to do so. Vhen a number is changed, we give as much advance notice as possible ..

DIRECTORY AND INFORMATION SERVICES
It is important to your service that you first know the number and then that you dial it or give it to the Oper ator accurately.
For this reason every subscriber in Brooklyn is given a directory every six months listing al! Brooklyn suf- scribers. A classified directory listing all business sul- scribers under business headings is also furnished as a convenient shopping and service aid.
Directories are also available for Manhattan The Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and suburban points. To give these books to all Brooklyn subscribers 'would LE an inconvenience to most subscribers and a needless ex- pinse to the Company. In cases where they are requireri, they are furnished upon request. Otherwise it is better to get numbers from Information (Dial 411), and keep then on a personal list. We also furnish, free of charge, attractive booklets for listing telephone numbers.
For a free copy of this booklet, sal the Business Office (Dal 811). It's a handy pace to list the number's you frequently call.
When you get a new directory, please check your; own listings, and if incorrect notify the Business Office at unce so that we may adjust our rofords for the next, issue and protect your service in the meantime.

Other' tele- phone employees also carry suitable identi ication. We suggest that subscribers refuse access to their premises to anyone who represents himself as from i tis Company, but who cannot so identify himself.
ATTACHMENTS TO TELEPHO IFS
The Company does not sanction the use ( 2 any devices except those furnished by it. This is in The interest of good service, since many of the devices offered for sale which are claimed to improve the service actually inter- fere with the service. Where ordinary equipment does ; not meet any particular need, the Company is ready to furnish special equipment at reasonable ra' s.

PRIVACY OF TELEPHONE SERVICE (Extract from Penal Law.)
A person who wrongfully obtains, or atteinpts to obtain, any knowledge of a telegraphic or telephonic message by connivance with a clerk, operator, messenger er other employee of a telegraph or telephone company, or being such clerk, operator, messenger or other ert- ployee, willfully divulges to anyone but the persons for whom it was intended, the contents or the nature there if of a telegraphic or, telephonic message or dispatch en- trusted to him for the transmission or delivery, or of which contents he may in any manner become pos- sessed, * * * is punishable by a fine of not more than. one thousand dollars for by imprisonment for mot more than two years, or by both such fine and imprisonmer.t.
OBSTRUCTING COIN TELEPHONES (Penal Law, Section 1432-a.)
It is provided by the Penal Law as amended March 24, 1933, that any person who shall prevent or contrive to prevent the return of coins to the users of coin telephones, or cause such coins to be unlawfully returned, or wlio shall by any device or means interfere with the action of operation of such coin telephones, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

A housewife may wish to talk to her servants. A wiring plan makes it possible to talk dir ctly between main and extension telephones without calling! the operator.
