Telephone Services
The Telephone Company maintains a Customer Service Bureau whose sole job is helping New York's business people to make more effective and eco- nomical use of their telephone service. Its services are available to you without charge. All you need do is call the Business Office (Dial 811) and ask that a representative call on you.
Charges for Local Service
Message Rate Service: The monthly rate for this service pays for all out-going local calls up to a certain number. A charge is then made for each call over that number. No charge is made in case your call .is not completed because of a "Line is busy" or "Don't answer" condinon, or for any other reason. If you get a wrong number, call this to the attention of the Operator.
New York City is so large and its telephone system so complex that it has been necessary to divide the city into rate zones as shown on this map.

The Business Office will be glad to send you a card showing this informas tion for calls made from your telephone or the Oper:' ator will be glad to tell you whether a call you wish to make is a one, two or three-call charge.
Calls that are dialed without the assistance of an op. erator are counted by an accurate system of mechanical registration. All other calls are recorded by the operator,,
Charges for Local Service (Cont'd.)
Our message rates provide for an overtime charge on all local calls of; more than five minutes. However, we do not make an overtime charge within the one-call range unless the time is materially in excess of five minutes.
- Flat Rate Service: Residence service can also be had at a monthly charge which pays for all Brooklyn calls. Calls to other points in New York City are charged for lat 5c, 10c, or 15c for the first 5 minutes. The Operator will be glad to tell you the charge for any call at any time or a card showing this information may be secured! by calling the Business Office.
Survey of the "Voice" of Your Business
A study of the methods used by your organization in handling incoming calls at your switchboard, and by all those who represent you, be- fore your customers, may be desirable. The efficiency of a modern business is reffected in the way it handles tele- phone calls. Its character shines out in the telephone voices of those whe represent it. If you are not entirely satisfied with the "Voice" of your business, we can help you and will be glad to assist in whatever training may be required.

Telephone Number Services
Personal Number Lists
In placing a call, it is impor- tant that you first know. the number and then that you dial it or give it to the Operator accurately.|| Your service will therefore be better if you keep a personal number list. The Business Office (Dial 811) will send you, on request, an attractive free booklet for telephone numbers.
Directory and Information Services
Every subscriber, in Brooklyn is given a directory listing Brooklyn subscribers.
Directories are also available' without charge for Manhattan, The Bronx, Queens, Staten Island and suburban points. To give these books to all Brooklyn subscribers would be an inconvenience to most sub- scribers and a needless expense to the Company. In cases where they are required, they are furnishedl'on request. Otherwise it is better to get numbers from Information (Dil 411) and; keep them on your per- sonal list.
Directories other than those mentioned above may be, obtained at a nominal charge by calling the Business Office (Dial 811).
If your directory becomes lost or mutilated, the Busi- ness Office will replace it. To prevent mistakes, we ask that you return old books when new ones are delivered.
Classified Directory
Every Brooklyn subscriber is also given a separately. bound classified directory printed. on yellow pages. . It lists all Brooklyn business and professional telephone numbers under suitable headings. No matter what commodity or service you want, you can generally find in the classified directory someone who can supply it.
Additional listings and advertisements in the classi- fied directory may be arranged for by calling the Busi- ness Office (Dial 811),
Displaying Telephone Numbers
It will be a convenience to those who may wish to call you, and will help to speed service, if you will print your telephone number on stationery and elsewhere. just as you do your street address.
Although we cannot guarantee that any number will be permanent, we make no changes in numbers unless the needs of the telephone system itself make it essential to do so. When a number is changed, we give as much advance notice as possible.
Directory Listings
If you have a telephone.you are of course entitled to one free listing. If you have more than one line, you are entitled to one free listing for each line up to three! Listings in addition to your free listings may be ob- tained at 25c .each per month.
When you get a new directory please check your own listings and, if incorrect, notify the Business Office at once so that we may adjust our records for the next issue ! and protect your service in the meantime.
"Many telephone users take additional listings so that their telephone numbers will be listed in other places in our directories where people may look for thera. Here are some of the listing arrangements you may secure by calling the Business Office (Dial 811), .
