Please Do Not Call INFORMATION For Numbers Already in the Directory

Nearly 5/2 million telephone directories are dis- tributed every year in New York City to help telephone users find the numbers they wish to call. For numbers that are not listed in the directories, we furnish an information service.

Despite the availability of ciirectories, about 175,000 calls are made to Information every day . for numbers that could easily be found. Those unnecessary calls take the time of operators and use telephone equipment which might better be

used for handling the vital war calls that are Hold- ing the wires of the entire telephone system.

For that reason, imnecessary calls constinte a difficult wartime problem. In normal tires, this problem could be solved by adding new equipment but that is no longer possible. The copper and other materials needed are now going into gims, planes, tanks and shells instead. So your under- standing cooperation | is needed if we are te meet successfully the problem . of unnecessary Information calls,

WE ASK YOUR COOPERATION IN THESE 3 WAYS

1 Keep in your pocket, handbag or desk-or near your telephone- your own personal list of numbers.

Laik up numbers you are not sure of. Refer to your personal

2 list for the telephone directory and call "INFORMATION" only when you cannot find the number.

3 If you must get a number from Information, jot it down so you will have it the next time you need it.

What We Are Doing, in Addition to Publishing the Directories, to Help You Get the Numbers You Want Without Calling "Information" .

A FEW PAGES OF HELPFUL INFORMATION

Telephoning Out-of-Town

The rise in the duty volume of long distance telephone calls, due almost entirely to a constantly increasing number of war calls, in presenting a serimis problem.

To insure prompt handling of war calls we are obliged to ask long distance users to refrain from placing social or business calls that are not essential

If you feeliyou must make a call that is not essential to the conduct of the war, and you encounter delay, will you please consider cancelling the call? Delay means that war calls are waiting.

Collect Calls

If you want the charge for an out-of-town call to be put on the bill of the called party, tell the Operator when you make the call that it is a "Collect Call." If someone at the called telephone agrees to accept the charges, you will be connected.

Collect calls cost no more than other out-of-town calls, except in the case of station-to-station calls having a basic charge of 20c or less. The time at the calling point governs the application of rates on collect calls.

Collect calls cannot be made to ships at sea, or to points outside the United States except Alaska, Canada; Cuba, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Appointment and Messenger Calls

The Long Distance Oper- ator will arrange an appoint- ment, if you wish, to be sure the called party will be at the telephone when you call. The charge is the same as for a person-to-person call, She- will send a messenger to find the called party on any person-to-person call, for a small additional charge.

Calls to Ships at Sea

Just call Long Distance (Dial 211) and ask for the Marine Operator. She will place your call, quote rates or furnish other information regarding Ship Telephone Service. |
