First + lift the receiver and list ar for the dial tone -a steady humming sound. Do not dial 1 ef wre you hear it. (If you do not hear the dial tone within a e sonable time, hang up, wait a few seconds, and try again.)
Then dial the number. For example, to call COney Island 6-9970:
Place your finger in the opening for the letter "C," then turn the dial until your finger firmly strikes the finger stop.
Take your finger out and let the dial return freely until it stops.
In the same fashion, dial the letter "O," followed by the five numerals 6 9970.
To dial a number with a party line letter, dial the letter also. For example, CO 6 9970 J.
When connected with another telephone, do not turn the dial. If you do the connection may be broken.
Between calls replace the receiver for a few se pick it up and wait for the dial tone before making the next call.
If you make an error when dialing, or your finger slips, hang up for a moment, lift the receiver and wait for the dial tone, then dial the complete number again. On each pull of the dial be sure your finger firmly strikes the finger stop. Be care- ful to distinguish between the letter "O" and the zero. The letters are used to dial only the first two letters of the office name and party line letter, if any.

HOW YOUR METROPOLITAN SERVICE
METROPOLITAN SERVICE AREA
The Metropolitan Service Area co nprises New York City, southern Westchester and most . f Nassau County. This area is divided into zones as show on the map below, and charges for calls made within thi area are based on the zoning.
Customers sometimes ask us u hy their calls within the Metropolitan Service Area are not itemized on their bills. When the Metropolitan Service Area was introduced in 1950, message unit billing was a necessary part of the
plan. This method of billing eliminated costly clerical and billing operations on :, ilions of low-cost telephone calls. The economies which resulted from this billing method have helped us to keep down the level of telephone charges and permitted a reduction in rates of from 5 to 20 cents on calls between many Metropolitan Service Area points. That's how we were able to keep the price of your telephone service low in comparison with almost every- thing else you buy.
