THE HANDSOME MAIN ENTRANCE of the

imposing Brooklyn Public Library faces the Plaza of the Grand Army of the . Republic. The gold figures on the columns represent the evolution of the sciences and arts, while those emblazoned on the brorize screen depict figures from many of the

most popular American stories.

Dedicated on March 29, 1941, the Library is one of the most beautiful and modern in the world. It houses over 700,000 volumes; circulates nearly a million books a year; and is used by about three- quarters of a million people every year.

Your Charges Explained

From all telephones (except coin telephones), the charges for calls completed to any point within the area covered by the above map are computed in terms of "message units." The number of message units is not necessarily the same as the number of phone calls made. The units charged for each call depend on the distance called and the length of the con- versation. Message units in addition to the number allowed monthly are charged at 5 cents each.

From roin telephones, the charges for calls completed to points in the area covered by the above map may be figured by using the message unit table on the opposite page. Charges from coin telephones are at the rate of 5 cents for each message unit with a minimum of 10 cents per call. Overtime charges are as follows:

For a call costing: 10€

You can tolk up to: 5 minutes

Overtime charges: Se for 3 minutes 50

15e or 20€ 25€ 30

2

1 minute

Calls to points within the Message Unit Calling Area can be "collect" or "person-to-person" if the message unit charge shown on the opposite page is 3 or more message units for the initial period. The charges are billed separately at the rate of 5 cents per message unit plus an added charge of 10 cents per call. From all telephones, collect and person-to-person calls should be placed with the operator.

Possible New York City Tax Refund

YOU MAY OBTAIN REFUND of the New York City sales tax paid (or avoid payment of such tax in the future) on calls from New York City to southern Westchester, Nassau County, Amityville, Gold Spring Harbor and Fatmingdale charged for on the second line of your telephone bill. Claims may be made by furnishing your Business Office with information (based on records or reasonable estimates) concerning such calls,

The amount of the refund is 3% of the charge for message

units used on such calls. For example, if 10% of your mes- sage units are for Nassau and southern Westchester calls, and your message unit charge (shown on the second line of your bill) is $10.00, you are not taxable on 109% of $10.00, or on $1.00. The tax on $1.00 is 3e so you would be entitled to a 3c refund,

Your Business Office will be pleased to furnish the appro- priate application forms.
