FOREWORD

 This ancient Burial ground, formerly located near the northernmost end of Manhattan Island; had its beginnings in the eighteenth century, and passed out of existence in the twentieth century. It was usually called the Dyckman Burial-ground, or graveyard, in more recent times, however, it is generally referred to as the Nagel Graveyard. Strange as it may seem, we have no existing: records of members of the Nagel family being interred within its bounds.

The records of the burials in the old Cemetery are far from complete. Fortunately, some of the gravestones were copied by a number of persons through the years: by Edsall, in 1881; by Eardeley, in 1908; by Spies, in 1916; and in 1926, when the land was taken over by the city of New York for transit facilities, some additional data was obtained.

In 1926, the City of New York disinterred 417 bodies, of these they were able to identify but 67, and 51 of those identified, were by means of name plates, and not by gravestones. Prior to 1926, a number of bodied were removed to other burialgrounds, notably members of the Dyckman family. Edsall in 1881, lists the names of 64 persons. He states at that date that many "ancient headstones were not decipherable." Eardeley, in 1908, lists but 50 names, and calls attention to "many rough stones, Cemetery dilapidated, and being removed". It is noticeable that the Eardeley records do not include the Dyckman burials. Eardeley also has a few names that Edsall does not record, notably some infants. Spies records but 27 gravestones, in 1916, and notes that the Dyckman bodies being removed to Oakland Cemetery, in Yonkers. Some of these Dyckman family removals occurred as early as the late 1880s.

Although we have records from four different sources, the total number of identified burials does not number much more than one hundred, and the total number of burials numbers at least 425 persons. While the Edsall, Eardeley, and Spies records have been available in some libraries, the names of the bodies disinterred in 1926, have not been available to library researchers, and these 51 names, identified by means of name plates will no doubt be welcomed. To make the records of the burial ground more complete, the four sources of data are included in this compilation.

THE BERRIAN BURIAL GROUNDS

Included in this compilation are a few notes and inscriptions of two other, old burial grounds in the Kingsbridge section of New York City: namely the Berrian Burial Ground, located in Van Cortlandt Park; and the old burial ground, formerly located on Fordham Heights, on Fordham Road, near the present Devoe Park, also called the Berrian Graveyard. 1954; FCH.

INSCRIPTIONS FROM THE DYCKMAN BURIAL GROUND, NEW YORK CITY, Contributed by Thomas Henry Edsall.

"An old burial ground on the Dyckman Property near the north end of Manhattan Island which I examined in March 1881, afforded the following mortuary data, which seems worthy of preservation in the RECORD. The plot contained about one acre, on the crown of a gently sloping knoll, east of the Kings Bridge Road, and about two hundred yards west of the "Century House", on the bank of the Harlem River. Some inscriptions on the more ancient headstones were not decipherable, and it required the scraping away of moss to read several which are given."

"These are nearly all names of old families resident earliest times in Harlem (of which the old burial plot was once a part). "the Yonkers", across the "Wading place," to the north, or Fordham Manor, across Harlem river to the east. It is noticeable that half a dozen were born in the first half of the 18th Century, and nearly twenty survived three score and ten".

The following bodies were disinterred from the Dyckmen Graveyard, at Inwood, New York City, and reinterred in Oakland Cemetery, in Yonkers, N.Y., and were copied by Francis F. Spies, during July祐eptember 1922. The numbers and comments in brackets are those of Mr. Spies. It may be of interest to compare Mr. Spies's data, with that given to us, by Mr. Edsall, in 1881.

NAGEL CEMETERY, NEW YORK CITY. NAMES OF IDENTIFIED DEAD DISINTERRED IN 1926.

The Nagel Cemetery was located on Manhattan Island, between West 212th Street, and West 215th Street; the westerly line of the Cemetery being 185 feet east of the east building line of 10th Avenue, and extended approximately 162 feet eastwardly along the north building line of West 212th Street. The westerly line of the Cemetery extended approximately 140 feet north from 212th Street, and the easterly line of the Cemetery, extended approximately 125 feet north of West 212th Street. There were a few bodies buried outside these limits.

The Hagel Cemetery was located within the limits of the present "207th Yards", Independent System, New York Transit System. The bodies were disinterred in 1926, work beginning on October 20th, of that year, and under the supervision of Board of Transportation. The bodies were reinterred in Woodlawn Cemetery, Borough of the Bronx, New York City, in a burial lot, approximately 53 feet by 30 feet, (Lot No. 16150), North of Alpine Avenue, and approximately 91 feet east of West Border Avenue, of Woodlawn Cemetery.

Total number of bodies disinterred was 417; of which the total number of known bodies was 67; total number of coffins used for reinternment was 312; maximum number of bodies found in one grave was 11; minimum number of bodies found in one grave was 1; Maximum number of bodies reinterred in one coffin was 11; minimum number of bodies reinterred in one coffin 1.

Each grave was assigned a number as it was opened at the Nagel Cemetery by the Board of Transportation. These same grave numbers were assigned to the coffins containing the remains disinterred, so that the coffin number in which the bodies were reinterred in Woodlawn Cemetery corresponds with the grave number assigned at the Hagel Cemetery.

KTNGSBRIDGE BURIAL GROUNDS: BERRIAN-BASHFORD By Thomas H. Edsall.

"Bordering on the lake and running back to the lane which leads up past the old saw mill to the residence of Mr. Augustus Van Cortlandts, is a plot of several acres, used as a colt-pasture, At the end towards the lane, where now is a grove of locusts, there are yet standing about 60 years ago, the house of Jacobus Van Cortlandt, who bought its site (and perhaps the old house) in 1699. At the other end, overlooking the lake, is an ancient burial-place. Most of the graves were marked by field stones only, with no inscriptions, except sometimes the initials of the deceased, of several inscribed headstones standing a few years ago, but two remain in the place. The New York City and Northern Rail Road was cut through one end of the plot, where tradition says negroes were buried. This cemetery was in part at least, the probable burial place of the families of William Betts and George Tippett- the first settlers after Vander Donck. They purchased the large tract comprising it, in 1668, from Elias Doughty, brother and grantee of Mrs. O'Neale, Vander Donk's widow. The stones which remain upright are inscribed: In Memory of Samuel Berrien who died June 26, 1795, aged 75 years 2 months 4 days. In Memory of Dorcas Berrien who died February 20, 1794, aged 66 years 3 months and 22 days".

Samuel(4) Berrian was descended from Cornelius Jansen(1) Berrien, from Alckmaer, North Hollad, probably a Huguenot, whose parents had fled thither from Berrien, in France. He was settled in Flatbush as early as 1669, and died at Newtown in 1689. His widow, Jannetie, daughter of Jan Stryker, married Samuel Edsall, and his son John(2), married his step-sister Ruth Edsall, April 5, 1697. Their son Cornelius(3) married Sarah Hallett, and had Samuel (4).

Dorcas Berrian was a daughter of George Tippett, son of George(2) and grandson of George(1), whose wife Mehitable was a daughter of his co-owner William Betts. The latter married at Barnstable, Mass., in February 1639, Alice ---- a "maiden of the Bay", who survived him.

From broken marble slab nearly buried in the ground, the following was deciphered: "In Memory of Phebe, wife of John Bashfod, who departed this life October 17, 1807, age 37 years 9 months 7 days." "In Memory of Hannah ---- of John Bashford, who departed this life September 27, 1805, age 34 years 10 months". T.H.E.

ACKERMAN-WARNER, "Thomas H. Edsall, Esq., under date of July 24th (too late for our last issue) sends the following additional items on page 144, of the July number of the Record, relating to Van Cortlandta, Yonkers: "On a Prostate brown stone slab is the following: In Memory of William Ackerman, Who departed this life October 4, 1808, in the 82nd year of his age." "A field stone is marked A x W. Probably the initials of Andrew Warner. Ackerman was probably he who once owned what is now Riverdale."

KINGBRIDGE BURIAL GROUNDS; "OLD BURIAL GROUNDS IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK." By Thomas H. Edsall.

"Where Sedgwick Avenue intersected it, on the slope of Fordham Heights was another old abandoned burial place partly overrun by the Avenue. The following data was copied in 1881.

"Among my notes, I find the following transcripts of inscriptions on old grave stones taken in April 1881, in an ancient and long disused burial place on the Van Cortlandt estate, near the Station of that name on the New York City and Northern Rail Road. I believe this to have been the family burial ground of the Betts and Tippett families, when they owned and occupied the land of which that estate is a part, in the seventeenth century. The old Van Cortlandt Mansion stood about 100 yards from it until it was torn down about 70 years ago.
  • On a prostrate, broken marble slab: "In Memory of Phebe, wife of John Bashford, who departed this life October 17, 1805, age 37 years 9 months 7 days". On a broken fragment of marble: "In memory of Hannah ---- of John Bashford, who departed this life Sep. 27, 1805, age 34 years and 10 months".
  • On a brown sand stone slab, Standing: "In Hemory of William Ackerman ----"
  • On well Preserved brown sand stone slabs standing side by side: "In Memory of Dorcas Berrian, who died February 20, 1794, age 66 years 3 months 22 days"; and, "In Memory of Samuel Berrian, who died June 26, 1795, aged 75 years 2 months 4 days".
"The last two were grandparents of the Rev. William Berrian, D.D., late Rector of Trinity Church and its historian. The grandmother, Dorcas, was a daughter of George Tippett, owner of Tippet's Neck (Spuyten Duyvil), a loyalist who it is said migrated to Nova Scotia, at the close of the Revolutionary War. Samuel Berrian purchased his estate and resided upon it until his death. He was descended from Cornelius Jansen Berrien, a Huguenot, and Jannetie Stryker, daughter of Jan, by marriage of their son John with his step-sister Ruth Edsall, April 5, 1697, who had issue Cornelius, who married December 29, 1719, Sarah Hallett and had Samuel who died ut supra.

This is very likely the burial ground that was situated at the intersetion of Fordham Road and Sedgwick Ave., opposite Devoe Park. (F.C.H.)

HISTORICAL CEMETERY DESPOILED; PICTURESQUE FORHAM HEIGHTS BURYING GROUND, NOW A BARREN WASTE. BY Randall Oomfort.

Not content with razing to the ground stately mansions, the merciless speculatore are now invading the sacred precincts or Brox Cemeteries. A large gang of workmen recently assailed the tiny "God's Acre" at Sedgwick Avenue and Fordhem Road, on Fordham Heights, known as the old Berrien Burying Ground, and literally carried every thing away before them, so that today the spot, once completely covered with thickly growing trees and bushes, is as desolate and barren as the Sahara Desert.

Dating back to the early days when the Fordham Manor Dutch Reformed Church stood close by, this little enclosure was used as a place for its interments. As it is claimed that right to bury the dead there was merely a matter of favor, and as no plots were actually sold, the tract has now been reclaimed by the heirs and is about to be placed on the real estate market.

A most pathetic sight was witnessed while the band or laborers were at work digging. Under a large tree was placed a packing box, in which all bones were laid, to be carried to a nearby undertaker's establishment. Already the capacity was strained to its utmost, and skulls and other equally grewsome relics filled it to overflowing. several feet below ground, a large tombstone was discovered inscribed: OLIVER CROMWELL; Died in 1816; Age 52 years.

As if anticipating the downfall or the little cemetery over which it had so long guarded, a magnificent willow tree on the Sedgwiek Avenue side, not long ago, came crashing to the ground, whose great trunk, three feet from the base, measuring just twenty-two feet and one inch, and was declared to have been 300 years old. Had Henry Hudson chanced to peer through the rocky cleft at Spuyten Duyvil, where the splendid memorial structure is about to be erected in his honor, he might easily have detected this young monarch or the forest growing on the precipitous woodland hillside.

Today the branches or the trees that have been hewn down are grouped in a sort of a rough rustic fence around the bare rock and upturned earth that mark the once rural nook where reposed so many of the Bronx's early residents.

Across the Harlem River on the broad Dyekman Flats, at Inwood, is the little Nagle Cemetery, that so recently figured as the spot where the City tried to collect a lot of taxes, and did not know from whom to collect them: And just above, on the sloping lawn or the Webb shipbuilders' Home, the graceful white and gold figurehead is apparently watching over both burying grounds with unceasing interest as if saying: "I'm not so old as either of you, but if this despoiling process keeps on, I rather think I will be here long after you both have become things or the past.
