PREFACE
The Village of Owego, frequently called the garden spot of Southern New York, is charmingly located on the picturesque Susquehanna river, where the valley widens at the confluence of the Owego creek, a stream that in many sections would be termed a river.
It is the county seat of Tioga County and has many imposing public buildings including the court house, county clerk's office, central fire station, Coburn Free Library, Tioga Theatre, the John J. Van Nostrand Parish House, Owego Free Academy, Central Grade School and seven church edifices: the Baptist, Congrega- tional, Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and the African M. E.
The hotels of Owego are rated among the best in the country, and are far ahead of many to be found in villages of its size, and larger. Each house maintains a service connecting with the arrival and departure of all trains; and the proprietors of the several hostelries vie with each other in seeking to keep the standards of their establishments up to the minute in all appointments. Notwithstanding the fact that Owego is in the village class as yet, it is a fact, often noted by visitors within its gates, that the hotels are far advanced into the city type, and there is nothing ruralistic or "tavern" about any of them. The cuisine, and the room accom- modations are on a par with the best and most satisfying and comfortable to be found elsewhere, and this claim is not hyperbole.
Owego's educational facilities are unsurpassed. The Owego Free Academy is rated among the foremost institutions of learning in New York State. The grade schools are maintained at a corresponding degree of efficiency.
Owego's water supply is plentiful and wholesome. Its fire department has for years been considered to be one of the most active and efficient in the State.
Owego has exceptional shipping facilities, it being located on the main lines of the Erie and the Lackawanna Railroads, and on branch lines of the Lehigh Valley and Delaware & Hudson Railroads.
In the Summer, when the trees are in full leaf and the flowers are in bloom, Owego, with its miles of brick paved and macadamized streets, its wide stone and cement sidewalks, shaded by a wealth of umbrageous elms and maples, is the most attractive and beautiful village in America.
Owego's streets are lighted by electricity; the boulevard system of street light- ing being employed in the business section and the business places and residences are lighted with both electric light and gas. Owego's stores offer many inducements to shoppers.
Owego's largest manufactories are the Owego Bridge Co., the Leader Iron Works, the Champion Wagon Works, the Julius Kayser & Co. glove factory, the Storrs Mica Co., the Standard Butter Co., the Greig & Mason Petticoat Co., and the Ives Motorcycle Co.
