This record was begun by Thomas Dodge, who was caretaker or sexton of the Quaker burial ground at Chappaqua Meeting and a coffin maker. The burial ground was the only one in that Community (except a few private grounds) for many years. The records contain about 2200 deaths, at Chappaqua and elsewhere, of Friends and others, the earliest being about 1807. The first page, now extant, is much worn and possibly some previous pages are lost.
It was continued after his death by his son Henry Dodge, also caretaker, and Henry's neice, Susan (Washburn) Devoe, who gave it to James Dodge, grandson of Henry, in whose possession it now is.
This digest is copied from a card index made by Robert B. Miller a few years since, from a copy of the original made by Frank Haviland and the editorial matter, in parentheses, is by Robert B. Miller and Francis F. Spies.
The original is unbotmd, loose and badly worn. Copied 1914.
Book of Deaths, CHAPPAQUA, N.Y., New Castle Township, Grond(?) alongside Quaker Meeting House. Copied Sept. 1908.
