One Minute Sermon ON CHURCH GOING

Text : "Not forsaken the assembling of ourself together, as the manner of some is."-Heb. 10:25.

Church going is a means of grace, and divinely ap- pointed. It is helpful and restful. A fine investment of your time. It developes the best powers of the man. But how easily neglected. Absence from next Sunday's ser- vices will make it easy to stay away the next week. The slightest irregularity in attendance will work serious havoc with a good habit. Then we reach for an excuse. We shall find a plenty except good ones. Most excuse analyzed mean simply, "I don't wish to." If you will attend church regularly one quarter, you will want to. Try the remedy. Begin next Sunday if you have not al- ready begun. We shall look for you.

Church History

The beginning of Methodism in Unadilla is relied in obscurity. It was a part of Otego Circuit, and before that of Otsego Circuit. On April 26, 1832, Moses B. Maxwell leased to the trustees of the Unadilla Central Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Seventy-six and one half rods of land. The yearly rental of this piece of property was one peppercorn.

Sometime prior to the building of the church the class worshiped in the east end of the dwelling house now )C- cupied by Mr. G. W. Hardy on Main Street. It was erected by Judge Paige and used at the time as a store. Slab benches were constructed for seating the people.

At that time the street ran between the elm trees and the house. On December 6, 1854, the society met for incorporation, Solon P. Hubbel and Samuel G. Cleveland presided, and Solon P. Hubbel, David Lee, Samuel G. Cleveland, David Bullock and W. H. Emory were elected trustees, and the society choose the following corporation name : "The Trustees of the First Methodist Episcopal

Church of Unadilla Village."

On December 29, 1856, Christopher D. Fellows and wife Caroline deeded the society the site for the church, receiving $350 for the same. The church was in process of erection at the time. The church cost $2,700 and was dedicated by Bishop James on January 27, 1857.

On February 15, 1885, after an expenditure of $6,000 in remodeling the building, the church was rededicated, and feast of dedication continued through the week. Dur- ing the services $2,000 was raised.

On May 1, 1867, a parsonage property was bought of Orlando Delevan and wife Jane L. for $2,500. In 1896 the old parsonage was replaced by a new one costing $1,385.

The bell costing $500. was purchased in 1881, and the pipe organ, which cost $600 in 1900.

On September 22, 1901, a memorial tablet in honor of Hiram Hubbel was unvailed, placed there by his sons. Hiram Hubbel was brother to Solon, and both men enthus- iastic supporters of the church in its early days.

Union church at East Sidney is five miles east of Unadilla. Preaching services were begun here before 1840. The class worshiped many years in a building originally built for a school house.

In 1870 the church, 28x42 feet, was built, costing $3,000. This appointment was with Sidney Center until after 1880.

HISTORY

In October 1822 the Harmony Society of Unadilla, N. Y. was formed and Calvin Gates, Daniel Castle and Holly Seeley were elected Trustees. In April 1823 this Church was organized with eleven members, Garrett Munfore, Jesse R. Hovey and John Eells were chosen Elders and Holly Seeley, Deacon.

Services were sometimes held in a private residence but usually at the School House. In 1824, Rev. Isaac Flager was engaged as pastor, though only here two years 44 were received into the Church. As early as 1825 steps were taken to erect a house of worship but financial strength was lacking and it was not until 1840 that the Church secured its present site. The Church was occupied in June 1844. In 1841 a change of name was deemed advisable "Harmony" was dropped and the present name "First Presbyterian Society of Unadilla," adopted. In 1872 the Church was quite extensively repaired and

opened again for Divine Worship on Oct. 30th. The new pastor Rev. Albert B. Robinson was installed on the same day and several who were present speak of the great spiritual uplift they received at the services. Mr. Robinson continued as pastor until May 1876 and from that time on the Church has had the usual history of Churches but the events are of such recent occurence that it is not necessary to find place in such a brief ep- isode of history as is here given. The pastors who have served the Church since Mr. Robinson have been the Rev. W. C. Galpin, Rev. A. C. Bishop, Rev. C. E. Fay, Rev. Edward L. Chichester, Rev. Daniel G. Lawson, Rev. R. H. Nichols, Rev. J. H. Colclough, Rev. Frank E. Hoyt, Rev. I. H. Polhemus and the present incumbent Rev. Frank W. Townsend.

Dr. Cuyler once said, and one of your pastors gave you this word some forty years ago, but it will bear repeating, and we hope you will read it enough so that it will be part of your working creed:

"Two things characterize the Church that is in the high- est condition of spiritual health. The one is that they all worship, the other that they all work. The first ap- pertains more directly to the heart; the second apper- tains as well to the head, the hands and the purse. The fullest combination of the two would almost realize the ideal of Church life into its highest form."

THEN HERE IS OUR INVITATION

"To all who pray, and to all who do not. but ought. To all who need a Savior, and to "Whosoever Will" --- This Church opens wide the door and in the name of Jesus the Lord, says WELCOME."
