PREFACE
Every ten years, from 1880 on, Vassar College has published a general catalogue of officers and alumnae. It was a serious question, however, whether such a catalogue should be issued in 1920, just at the close of the war. When the time came to begin gathering material, general conditions, directly or indirectly affect- ing the college and the alumnae, were still so far from normal that the expenditure of time and money necessary for the undertaking seemed to some scarcely justi- fiable. The determining factors in the final decision to publish were the very general desire for a fairly complete record of the war work done by Vassar gradu- ates, and the fact that the alumnae association, its office well established, was in a position to relieve the college of the work of compilation. A further consideration was that no more copies of the last alumnae address register were to be had, the edition having been exhausted some time since. An address register was clearly necessary; a biographical address register was highly desirable.
The expenses of issuing the register, officially known as the Fifth General Cata- logue of Vassar College, have been met in part by the college and in part by the Associate Alumnae, but the entire responsibility for the book has rested with the alumnae. In the spring of 1919 the association appointed Elizabeth L. Ingersoll, 1913, chairman of a register committee. After getting the work well under way she was unfortunately obliged to resign, business calling her to Constantinople. The committee as reorganized in the autumn consisted of Alice D. Snyder, 1909, chairman, Elizabeth L. Brezee, 1911, Margaret Jackman, 1916, Grace E. Marrett, 1906, M. May Reynolds, 1915, Zita L. Thornbury, 1908, and Harriet Sawyer, 1907, executive secretary of the association. The committee and the office staff have been assisted by a number of alumnae and members of the faculty, and have relied throughout on the invaluable cooperation of the president of the association, Helen Kenyon.
The register contains the names of the trustees and officers of Vassar College from 1861 to date, and of the officers of the Associate Alumnae and the Vassar Students' Aid Society; the names and addresses of all graduates of the college, and of all non-graduates who had joined the association at the time the compilation was begun, together with abbreviated life histories (including war activities) of all who returned the questionnaires sent out; tables of statistics, and a geographical list as well as an alphabetical index. One or two of these sections call for a little explanation.
The information given in the biographical and address section is based on questionnaires which were sent to all alumnae who could be reached. Whenever necessary three attempts were made to get into communication; two notices were sent from the office direct and the third via class representatives. Altogether eighty-one per cent of the living alumnae responded. Where the three attempts all failed, the committee entered in the register simply the name and latest re- corded address, since biographical information gathered indirectly was bound to be incomplete and very possibly incorrect. Information about alumnae who had died was taken from the 1910 catalogue and from statements sent in by relatives or close friends.
Late questionnaires, corrections and additions continued to come to the office long after the register copy had been sent to the printers. In some instances it was possible to make the corrections requested when the proof sheets were being read, but such instances, unfortunately, were the exception rather than the rule.
As was stated when the questionnaires were sent out, not all the information asked for was designed for publication; some of it was simply to be kept on file in the alumnae office. Much, however, that the committee would have been glad to include had to be omitted because of space limitations. Husbands, for example, had to be sadly slighted-though they do appear indirectly, as the full married names of the alumnae are always given in the address entries. Interesting activi- ties which were not listed on the questionnaires as "occupations " could not be published except in cases where the recorders felt sure that they might legitimately have been so listed. Publications by alumnae have increased so rapidly in num-

ber during the last few years that it would have added very considerably to the cost of the register to print the complete list, and since the Quarterly announces them regularly they also have been omitted.
It was, of course, necessary to adopt some uniform scheme of condensing and abbreviating the biographical information which was to be published, and a re- cent Smith College catalogue, that combined the virtues of economy and clarity, has served to some extent as a model for this as well as for other parts of the register. An explanation of the scheme adopted, together with a key to the princi- pal abbreviations used, will be found on page 20. Past and present occupations, it will be noted, are entered in separate clauses, the past standing first; the very few instances in which the scheme has resulted in some ambiguity are to be ac- counted for by the fact that the questionnaires were not completely filled out.
In connection with the war work some special condensations and omissions should be mentioned. Knitting, sewing and surgical dressings have been entered, where no other organization was mentioned, as Red Cross Work. Only when the questionnaires indicated executive positions of some importance has it been possible to designate the particular kind of Red Cross work engaged in. Liberty Loan work was undertaken by so many as a matter of course that it has been mentioned only when the questionnaires indicated important pieces of organization.
The table of occupations, in the statistical section of the register, is based simply on the reports of "paid " occupations, and since many of the alumnae did not state whether the work they were doing was paid or volunteer, the statistics are far from complete. The committee's original plan of printing a complete list of alumnae, classified according to occupations, had to be abandoned for the time being. When the questionnaires were sent out so many alumnae were doing temporary war work, or were in the process of changing from war to peace activi- ties, that such a list would have been of too little permanent value to justify the additional expense. The committee trusts that as soon as conditions have be- come more settled an occupational list, compiled in thoroughly scientific fashion, can be issued by the association-possibly in connection with the 1922 address register.
Those who have worked on the register know that in spite of all their care they must have made mistakes, especially when they have had to use their own discre- tion in selecting and condensing the biographical data sent in. Moreover, the questionnaires themselves varied so widely in the completeness of the information included that, all questions of accuracy and judgment aside, records based upon them are bound to be misleading in some respects. For example, many alumnae entered under "War Work " the Red Cross knitting and sewing that they had done, while others, who may have done quite as much, thought that it was not of enough importance to mention and hence could not be credited with Red Cross activities. It is to be hoped that whenever alumnae discover mistakes or omissions of real importance they will report them at once to the alumnae office, so that they may be corrected in the office records and in future publications. In the mean time, it is also to be hoped that the present register will be found reasonably adequate, and will serve not only to furnish addresses and specific pieces of information, but to give some idea of the interesting and significant work that Vassar alumnae have been doing in the various fields that they have chosen.
