INSCRIPTIONS FROM THE
SECOND CEMETERY 03
BION'S LUTHERAN CHURCH,
WEST SANDIAKE, RENSSELAER COUNTY, ". Y. S
L. Pavia
F129 . W702 C6
INTRODUCTION.
Among the numerous burial places in Rensselaer Co. there are few if any which contain more valuable information concerning the local descendants of the Palatines, then the three cemeteries at West Sandlake. In the following pages will be found a complete list of all inscriptions remaining in the second burying ground of Zion's Lutheran Church, at the rear of the present churchyard. The first burial ground of this church is located about a mile from the village in a Southerly direction, and its few surviving inscriptions are preserved in another list copied by the writer.
The cemetery, whose records appear in these pages, is now much neglected, and it is barely possible that, owing to the long grass and bushes in the most neglected portions, a few stones may have been overlooked, though this list is as nearly complete as a careful search could make it.
In studying those inscriptions the reader will observe that beginning with the old S. Eastern portion on the left as one enters, the stones are copied successively in rows as nearly as possible, working Westward until one reaches the Westernmost N. and S. pathway and the family lots. Then beginning near the S. W. corner, these family lots are copiod in short E. & W. rows, working Northward and keeping West of the above-said path. Then follows the middle sec- tion of the North-side, worked and numbered from N. to S., and finally the Eastern section of the North-side worked and numbered from S. to W. (see chart) .
Then two or more records are found on one stone or monument, they are included in side brackets enclosing the corresponding numbers. This plan should be of much genealogical value, in showing family relationship, etc. The writer has tried to be as exact as possible, even to reproducing self-evident errors, and all names are copied literatim. Among the curious errors of the engraver or of friends is the remarkable date "Feb. 31" and the self-contradic- tory record concerning John Snyder, on page 22, second No. 11. The reader Will also observe that on many monuments the names and birth dates of many living persons are given with blank space for date of death.
Though it has required much painstaking labor to secure and present the contents of the following pages, the writer will feel amply rewarded if these records meet with the appreciation which they deserve.
W.S.Coons.

"Why do wo mourn departing friends Or shake at death's alarms,
Tis but the voice that Jesus sends To call them to his arms,
Mourn for the noble hearted.
The high and gifted one
His spirit has departed
His work on earth is done . With brief and solemi warning
A calm and slow decar In manhood's early morning His spirit passed away.
Mourn for our ranks are broken å noble soul has flod
With sorrow deep unspoken
Mourn for the gifted dead; Mourn for the friends who loved him,
Shall see him here no more The grave has closod upon him His pilgrimage is o'sr.
