INTRODUCTION
The 1810 Federal population census schedule gives, for each family, the name of its head plus the number of family members (including the family head) in each of the following 12 categories.
A. Free white males under 10 years of age
B. Free white males of 10 years and under 16 years of age
C. Free white males of 16 years and under 26 years of age
D. Free white males of 26 years and under 45 years of age
E. Free white males of 45 years and older
F. Free white females under 10 years of age
G. Free white females of 10 years and under 16 years of age H. Free white females of 16 years and under 26 years of age
J. Free white females of 26 years and under 45 years of age
K. Free white females of 45 years and older
L. All other persons except Indians not taxed
N. Slaves
In the two 1810 census transcripts that follow, the capital letters across the top of each page correspond to the categories described above. Thus, each line in the transcript contains all the available data on one family. As an illustration, consider the following example :
Smith, William 2 0010 2 1010 01
In this example we see that the family head is named William Smith. The family contains two free white males under 10 years of age, one free white male of 26 years and under 45 years of age, two free white females under 10 years of age, one free white female of 10 years and under 16 years of age, one free white female of 26 years and under 45 years of age, and one slave. Notice that the schedule gives no information on family relationships. Hired hands, distant relatives; in fact, anyone living in the house at the time the census enumera- tor passed by may have been included as a member of the family.
As compared to the 1810 schedules, the 1820 Federal population census schedules give more detailed information on each family, and in addition use a substanti- ally different array of categories. These categories, a total of 32, are as follows:
A. Free white males under 10 years of age
B. Free white males of 10 years and under 16 years of age
C. Free white males of 16 years and under 18 years of age D. Free white males of 16 years and under 26 years of age
E. Free white males of 26 years and under 45 years of age
F. Free white males of 45 years and older
iii
G. Free white females under 10 years of age
H. Free white females of 10 years and under 16 years of age
J. Free white females of 16 years and under 26 years of age K. Free white females of 26 years and under 45 years of age
L. Free white females of 45 years and older
N. Foreigners not naturalized
0. Number of persons engaged in agriculture
P. Number of persons engaged in commerce
Q. Number of persons engaged in manufacturing
Up to this point, the 1820 schedule categories closely parallel those of the 1810 census. One additional category, free white males of 16 years and under 18 years of age, has been added to the 1820 schedule and one notices that this new category is included within the age brackets of the adjacent one, free white males of 16 years and under 26 years of age. In addition, informa- tion is provided on unnaturalized foreigners and on the numbers of persons en- gaged in agriculture, commerce and manufacturing. As with the previous census, no information on family relationships is provided by the 1820 schedules.
Following the above-described categories, the 1820 census schedules continue :
A. Male slaves under 14 years of age
B. Male slaves of 14 years and under 26 years of age
c. Male slaves of 26 years and under 45 years of age
D. Male slaves of 45 years and older
G. Female slaves under 14 years of age
H. Female slaves of 14 years and under 26 years of age
J. Female slaves of 26 years and under 45 years of age
K. Female slaves of 45 years and older
A. Free male colored persons under 14 years of age
B. Free male colored persons of 14 years and under 26 years of age
c. Free male colored persons of 26 years and under 45 years of age
D. Free male colored persons of 45 years and older
G. Free female colored persons under 14 years of age
H. Free female colored persons of 14 years and under 26 years of age
J. Free female colored persons of 26 years and under 45 years of age
K. Free female colored persons of 45 years and older
N. All other persons except Indians not taxed
In St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties, the overwhelming majority of the pop- ulation in 1810 and 1820 was free white. So as to more efficiently use the space on the transcript pages, advantage has been taken of this fact by assign-
iv
ing several alternative categories to some of the column headings. A few ex- amples will make clear how this is done :
example 1
Johnson, Elijah 101101 01010 0101
Here the family head is Elijah Johnson, a free white male. The family contains one free white male under 10 years of age, one free white male of 16 years and under 18 years of age, one free white male of 45 years and older, one free white female of 10 years and under 16 years of age, and one free white female of 26 years and under 45 years of age. One family member is engaged in agri- culture and one in manufacturing.
example 2
Jones, John 0 00000 (free colored) 1 010 0 0 1 0
0 0000 0100
In this example, there are no white people in the family. This fact is shown by the zeros in the first eleven positions on the top line. The family head is John Jones, a free colored person. The family contains one free male colored person under 14 years of age, one free male colored person of 26 years and under 45 years of age, and one free female colored person of 26 years and under 45 years of age. One family member is engaged in agriculture.
example 3
0 00010
Smith, Henry (slave) 0 1 1 0 00010 0301 0 0 1
Here the family head is Henry Smith, a free white male. The family contains one free white male of 26 years and under 45 years of age, one free white female of 26 years and under 45 years of age, one male slave of 14 years and under 26 years of age, one male slave of 26 years and under 45 years of age, one male slave of 45 years and older, and one female slave of 45 years and older. Three family members are engaged in agriculture and one in manufactur- ing.
Data for these four transcripts were taken from positive microfilm copies of the original census schedules, obtained from The National Archives in Wash- ington, D.C .. Identities of these microfilm copies are as follows:
1810 St. Lawrence Microcopy M-252, roll # 36, pp. 2-22
1810 Jefferson Microcopy M-252, roll # 28, pp. 4-70 1820 St. Lawrence - Microcopy M-33, roll # 79, pp. 103-157
1820 Jefferson Microcopy M-33, roll # 72, pp. 337-495
Page numbers in the above microcopies refer to page numbers in the original records from which the microfilm negatives were made. In the following
V
transcripts, each page number in the original record appears to the left of the first entry on that page of the record. Since these transcripts preserve the order in which the families appear in the original record, inclusion of the original record page numbers makes for more convenient reference to the original.
As census schedules of the period go, these four appear to have been carefully written and are in general quite readable. The microfilm copies are of good quality. Inevitably there are some names and numbers that cannot be unambig- uously interpreted. In each such instance, the most probable interpretation has been given, followed by a question mark in parentheses.
In using these transcripts and index, one should keep in mind the fact that there are several causes, other than illegible handwriting, for possible errors or variations in spellings of names. The original records were pro- duced by a number of people. Although data from each county were ordinarily collected under the supervision of one or two marshalls, many census enumer- ators were involved. Handwriting styles varied widely. No one is in a position to know just how a given enumerator went about his job. In some instances, information on a family might be obtained from friends or neigh- bors. The result is uncertainty, occasionally, as to the correct reading of a name. There are a number of instances, scattered throughout the transcripts in which what could well be the same family name appears, legibly written, but in a variety of spellings. As illustration, "Wright", "Write", "Right", and "Rite" are all quite likely the same family name, corrupted by tendencies toward phonetic spelling by the census enumerator or family head. There seems no completely satisfactory way of correcting this situation. In these transcripts, The best estimates of the enumerator's actual spellings of the names have been used.
Within each of the four transcripts (1810 St. Lawrence, 1810 Jefferson, 1820 St. Lawrence, and 1820 Jefferson), the towns have been arranged in approxima- tely alphabetical order, although they do not necessarily appear this way in the original records. As previously mentioned, within each town the order- ing of families is unchanged from that of the original records.
In the index, names of family heads are arranged alphabetically by surname. The number following each name gives the page in the transcript on which the complete family data will be found.
Jefferson County was formed from Oneida County on 28 March, 1805. In 1808, a portion of the town of Rodman was transferred to Lewis County; in 1813, a portion of Lewis County was annexed to the town of Wilna. St. Lawrence County was formed from Clinton and parts of Montgomery and Herkimer Counties on 3 March, 1802. Prior to 1801, the settlements of St. Lawrence County were part of Oneida County, so that the 1800 Federal census of Oneida County
vi
includes the inhabitants of the area that is now St. Lawrence County. Within St. Lawrence and Jefferson Counties, there have been many changes in town boundaries. A detailed discussion of all of these changes is beyond the scope of this introduction. However, French's Historical and Statistical Gazetteer of New York State (1860) gives dates for some of these town boundary changes, although details of the changes themselves are not discussed.
