To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.

The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.

For Brooklyn, "the tide of Empire" is Eastward. Not only is the business center moving Eastward from the City Hall, but this year the city boundary line has been extended three miles towards the rising sun-and now embraces the entire town of New Lots-the most of which was formerly East New York. This annexation took place just in time to be included in this issue of our City Directory. We have canvassed the entire town, and the names from the new ward will be found in their appropriate alphabetical places.

By reason of the twelve numerical streets, which were renamed, but not renumbered, there has been additional work and care bestowed by us to make locations on those streets intelligent to the public. It is only regretted that the new numbers were not in time for this edition.

For the past seven years the price of our Directory has been $5.50. During this period the increase of names has amounted to the enormous number of 50,321. For this large addition to the expense of the work our city does not give patronage in proportion, but we were determined to have the Directory first-class in all respects, and are therefore obliged to make the price Six Dollars per copy.

This is but a slight advance when the immense addition to cost is con- sidered, and we confidently believe that our patrons, rejoicing in this careful exhibit of Brooklyn's prosperity, will appreciate and prefer our painstaking and thorough work at the advanced price.

We call attention to our new map showing the recent annexation of New Lots-forming an additional ward-the 26th.

Believing that a reliable Directory is of more practical benefit than even the local census. we consider it would be for the good of the general public if a law were enacted making it a misdemeanor for any one to refuse his name for the Directory.

This volume contains 175,761 names, an increase over last year of 12,827. From New Lots, the 26th Ward, we obtained 4000, making a net increase for Brooklyn of 8827 names.

According to the ratio of names in Directory and former Census returns, we estimate the present population of Brooklyn to be 768,075.
