28th Annual Reunion, at Buffalo, N. Y., Aug. 23 to 28, 1897.

Probably there was never another regimental reunion on the continent like that of the ist New York Dragoons in Buffalo during the re- cent National Encampment of the Grand Army. All the survivors of the regiment who could be found were hunted up and specially invited to come to the Encampment, to be the guests here of a member of the regiment, who had en. listed in the ranks in war-time as a boy of seventeen. Nearly 400 men-a quarter of the total number borne on the rolls of the regiment -accepted the invitation. They came from far and near. Every Western State was repre- sented, and one member came all the way from England. They had never been together before in such numbers since the war. Their former comrade of the ranks, now a leading Buffalo physician, housed them and entertained them during the encampment; and their visit to Buffallo will be a red-letter week in their memory.

The host of the Dragoons during this reunion was Dr. Devillo W. Harrington of No. 1430

28TH ANNUAL REUNION

Main Street. It was three months before the encampment that he began the work of finding the members of his old regiment, and inviting them to come. He sent to them the following invitation:

"My Dear Fellow Soldier of the Ist New York Dragoons:

You will see by the enclosed circular that the 31st National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic is to be held in Buffalo, begin- ning August 23d, and lasting until the 28th, in- clusive. Many of you are aware of the fact that I have a tender spot in my heart for every member of our famous regiment. As a demon- stration of this, I am going to ask each and every one of you to be my guest during this encampment. I have secured a vacant church next door to my residence, a competent caterer, cots, pillows and blankets, and I can assure you that the accommodations will be better than at the "Soldiers' Rest in Washington in '62." All that is necessary for any Dragoon to do upon reaching Buffalo is to make a hee-line for No. 1430 Main Street, which will be the home and headquarters of the Dragoons during the en- campment.

The most difficult thing connected with this reunion of the regiment is to get the names and correct addresses of the men; the roster of 1893, the last one issued, is not correct, and I can only ask every man who receives this invi- tation to extend it to as many others of the reg- iment as he knows the addresses of.

23TH ANNUAL REUNION

"We've shared our blankets and tent together, And marched and fought in all kinds of weather, And hungry and fall we've been; Had days of battle and days of rest, But this miem'ry I cling to and love the best;

We have drunk from the same canteen."

Let us get together once more and renew the friendships made when we were boys, for- getting the things that were sad, but refreshing our memories with the "twice- told tale" of brave deeds and victories won."

The task of tracing out the scattered members was a long one. Dr. Harrington succeeded so well, however, that the roster shows an actual attendance of 37S men out of the 1,500 who had served with the regiment.

Dr. Harrington engaged as lodgings for his guests the Glenwood Avenue Methodist church, next door to his residence, two vacant stores across the street and a vacant double house on Utica street. Cots were put in them and here the boys were quartered. He secured one of the best caterers in the city who came with a force of cooks and waiters and three excellent meals each day were served. No better food could be found in all Buffalo.

The Doctor's house was made headquarters and was called "Camp Gibbs." Back of the church was a large yard shaded with beautiful trees where the Doctor had erected a platform and seats for the accommodation of all and a number of tents for smoking quarters and hundreds of pipes aud any quantity of good

smoking tobacco were at the disposal of the Dragoons. The reunion was not without proper music for the Castile Band of seventeen pieces was present with the regiment during the whole week, another generous provision for the enjoy- ment of the boys.

Every train into Buffalo on Monday and Tues. day brought some of Dr. Harrington's guests, and as fast as they arrived at headquarters they were registered and assigned to quarters and the Doctor presented each with a beautiful badge. The two days were spent on arrival of the Dragoons in registering and hand shaking and the renewal of old acquaintance, and on Wednesday the Dector had a family of over 300 of the happiest men living on American soil, and he was the most surprised and happy man of all.

On Wednesday the regiment turned out in full force and made a special feature of the grand parade, receiving much applause along the line of march. It was the only single rep- resentative regiment of veterans in the parade. This honor was secured for the Dragoons through the efforts of Dr. Harrington.

ยท

Mrs. T. J. Thorp, wife of the colonel of the Dragoons, was in line with the regiment, rid- ing in a carriage carrying the regimental banner.

On Wednesday evening a delightful campfire with all the accessories, was held at Camp Gibbs. The regiment gave a drill to the munsic furnished by the Castile Band. After drill Dr. Harrington made a speech to his comrades which was responded to by Rufus C. Jefferson in an enthusiastic manner.

28TH ANNUAL REUNION

The 28th annual reunion of the First New York Dragoons was opened at the residence of Dr. D. W. Harrington, 1430 Main street, Buffalo, at to a. m. on Thursday, August 26th, and con. tinued all day, with a "feast of reason and flow of soul" such as only the boys who wore the blue know so well how to appreciate. A fam- ily of 378 members bound togethier in bonds of fraternal fellowship passed a week of solid en- joyment such as few regiments ever experience, and while Buffalo threw wide its gates with welcome to the G. A. R., the members of the Dragoons had such a special welcome as an organization at the hands of Comrade Harring- ton, which will be the red-letter week in the social history of the regiment. No parents ever offered a more cheery welcome to long-absent children and no children ever appreciated the welcome as have the veteran members of the First N. Y. Dragoons by their visit at "Camp Gibbs," as the headquarters were called.

George W. Durfee, vice president, of James- town, N. Y., was presiding officer.

Secretary C. D. Chilson, of Mt. Morris, N. Y., made his report, as did also Treasurer Capt. Henry Gale, of Oleau, N. Y., which were adopted. Chaplain A. J. Blanchard made a necrological report showing the death of twelve comrades the past year. James A. Crosier, commandent of the Soldiers' Home, Michigan, reported the death of james Holcomb, a mem- ber of the regiment. The deceased weighed 480 pounds. He died Aug. 18, 1897.

The committee on resolutions offered the following which was adopted by three hearty cheers:

28TH ANNUAL REUNION

CAMP GIBBS, Aug. 26, 1897.

We, the surviving members of the ist New York Dragoons, desire to express our high appreciation of the bountiful treatment we have received at the hands of our comrade, Dr. D. W. Harrington, in entertaining and providing in every way for our comfort and pleasure during our stay in Buffalo; therefore be it

Resolved, That we will ever cherish with grateful remembrance the open-heartedness and unbounded liberality of Comrade Harrington, who has so generously exemplified the esprit du corps of our historic ist New York Dragoons.

Dr, Harrington made a peculiarly happy specch, in which he said he wished the next national reunion could be held in Buffalo, and if such was the case his wish would be to have the dragoons come and stay a month, as his special guests. "There is no city in the land so loyal as Buffalo and the best citizens have this week been here to see you. When in Buffalo my house is your home." The Doctor also said that he wished the Dragoons would hereafter hold all reunions at his house instead of at Portage. Dr. Brownell, the Doctor's assistant, who had been assiduous in the work of hospitality, was made an honorary member of the Dragoons.

Justice E. W. Hatch was then introduced and related an incident of the battle of Manassas, where Corporal James Tanner lost his feet. The corporal was on the platform and the vet- erans gave him a hearty welcome as he arose to speak. And his splendid address was one which brought tears to the eyes of the veterans. Story and incident came in quick profusion and pathetic incidents of old comrades were the cause of great applause.

28TH ANNUAL REUNION

The following officers were elected:

President-Dr. D. W. Harrington, Budalo.

Vice President-Rufus C. Jefferson, St. Paul, Minn.

Secretary-Charles D. Chilson, Mt. Morris.

Treasurer-Henry Gale, Olean.

Executive Committee-Dr. Robert Rae, Gil- bert I. Freer and Henry Speese, Portageville.

Chaplain-Rev. A. J. Blanchard, Wellsville.

The secretary read a letter from Col. Thorpe from his far away home in Oregon.

Justice E. W. Hatch in a few appropriate re- marks presented an elegant gold headed cane to Dr. D. W. Harrington. It was a testimonial from the Dragoons. The Doctor was so much astonished and surprised he could scarcely utter his thanks for the gift.

There was a large number of ladies present to enjoy the reunion. They had been quartered at the homes of friends in the city and put in a first appearance on Thursday. Special guests were Mrs. "Tom" Thorpe, of Fort Grove, Ore., wife of the famous fighting colonel. Justice E. W. Hatch and wife, of Brooklyn, were also guests of Dr. Harrington on Thursday.

In the evening a camp fire was held and Mrs. T. J. Thorpe, wife of the old colouel of the Dragoons, made an interesting address. She received a royal greeting. The Colonel had sent a package of 300 pictures of himself on horse- back and Dr. Harrington saw that each veteran received one. A fine autograph album was presented the Doctor containing the names of all his guests, and which he prizes very much.

At the close of the camp fire the Doctor

called to the platform Richard Gay, or as he was better known in the regiment, "Cupid," a colored man who came home with the regiment from the South at the close of the war. The Dragoons gave him a hearty welcome. After giving a short address he asked all to arise and he closed the camp fire with the benediction. So ended a day never to be forgotten.

The camp continued until Saturday when the last good-bye was spoken, and "Camp Gibbs" will abide in the inemory of each Dragoon as "the brightest social week on record." The good Doctor disliked to part with his guests as badly as they regretted leaving his pleasant, hospitable home at No. 1430 Main St.
