The Stanton or Centennial Cemetery, as it is now called, of Wurtsboro, Sullivan County, New York, is one of the very oldest in the County, as the name implies, - located on a hill, about three miles north of the Village of Wurtsboro, formerly knows as Mamakating, - and on the main highway to Summitvill, and is enclosed by a low stone wall.
This cemetery is the burial place of the earliest settlers of this section. It is now completely overgrown with weeds, stickers, etc. Many of the stones have fallen to the ground, while others have been worn away by the storms of years and the names lost to posterity.
For a time, the Town of Wurtsboro appropriated a small sum for the upkeep, but this is no longer allowed, which accounts for the deplorable condition of this cemetery, which is now over one hundred years old. It is no longer used by the present residents of Wurtsboro.
