To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.

The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.

In consequence of the steady growth of our city, we have increased our business facilities, and are enabled this year, without sacrificing correctness, to publish this our Nineteenth Volume a few days earlier than usual.

Great pains have been taken to secure accuracy, and we believe this edition will be found more perfect than any heretofore issued. Our canvass has been made since the first of May (as is always our custom), after the annual moving has been completed ; consequently, every address is reported as accurately as possible. A few errors may undoubtedly be found, for we are not in- fallible. Some may be ascribed to that want of public spirit which leads some to shirk their duties to the law and the people.

The numerous public improvements agitated the past year impress upon us the importance of our city and incite a desire to keep pace with the times.

Steamboat landings, we confidently expect, will soon be established. They will greatly increase the facilities for visiting and moving into the city.

Rapid transit has been much talked of. May we not soon see some desirable scheme carried into operation ? The bridge towers loom up in lofty magnificence, and in course of time we shall be enabled to reach our sister city, promptly and with comfort, whether the river be iee-bound or the fog so thick as to render navigation difficult.

We look forward with much interest to the census which is about to be taken. In 1870 the census gave a population of 396,000. This was 4 6-10 times the names contained in the Directory, giving a ratio of 4.6 to 1.

This volume contains 114, 724 names, being an increase of 4,939 over last year. Com- puting at the above ratio, which we believe to be a fair one, our population ought now to be 527,730. We hope our census enumerators will see that our city is correctly canvassed, and that we get the true number of our population.

We take this opportunity to thank those who have patronized our advertising spaces. We claim that the Brooklyn Directory is one of the best advertising mediums.

To those who borrow their neighbor's Directory, we would suggest that by purchasing a copy for their own use they would save much valuable time, and give their friends much less annoyance. If they cannot afford the full edition, we publish the Business Directory separately for $1.50.

BROOKLYN, June, 1875.

CAUTION !

BEWARE OF SWINDLERS AND BOGUS AGENTS !

To such an extent have business houses been swindled in former years by paying money in advance for printing their names in capitals, that this year we have not allowed our Agents to collect any money in advance, however small the amount. This, though causing us much extra trouble, we trust will save the public from imposition.

The public are particularly cautioned that this is the only complete Directory of Brooklyn published, and not only gives the names of all heads of families and busi- ness houses, but contains also a regular Business Directory, with every trade classified under its appropriate heading, besides a Map, Street Guide, and Municipal Register. in the last year or two many business houses have found out too late, that they have signed orders for books which, when delivered, have been of no manner of use to them, and we advise the public never to give orders for books until the regular canvass, which never commences before May.

In consequence of the great demand, both in Brooklyn and New York, we this year publish, in a separate form, the Second Edition of our Business Directory. It contains the name of every business firm, classified under their proper heading, a new Map of the City, a Street Guide, and Municipal Register. Price, $1.50. Full Edition, City and Business, $5.00.

The Brooklyn Directory of each year, from 1840 to date, and Directories of the principal cities of the United States, are on file at this office, and may be referred to without charge.
