JOHN VERNON, m. Letitia Pool, b. - , 1769; d. Aug. 10, 1860. During the Revolutionary war John Vernon, a young English- man, came to this country and settled in Philadelphia. When Philadelphia was in possession of the British forces Vernon was "pressed" into the service of the English army, and being a capable teamster he was sent to Hempstead, L. I., from whence it was his duty to convey provisions to the English ships which lay at anchor near Lloyd's Neck, L. I. One dark night Vernon deserted and found a home with a Quaker family named Jack- son, of Syosset, L. I. After the war John Vernon married Letitia Pool, of Brooklyn, and began farming, and subse- quently purchased the farm in East Norwich where he lived the remainder of his life.
