Our Medical Society.
(Editorial from Brooklyn Eagle.)
The Kings County Medical Society wants a house. It is an organiza- tion of many hundred members, including all physicians in good standing and regular practice in this county. For a long time the doctors have been inconvenienced by meeting in a building which was entirely inadequate to their purposes and which was chosen without reference to the prospective growth of the city and the body. Among the privations resulting from the use of this headquarters was the inability of many of the members to hear or be heard at the meetings, and a more serious difficulty appeared in the dispo- sition of the books, which compose one of the most valuable medical libraries in the country, but which were made of little avail because they were packed . in closets and cellars for want of room, and exposed to danger from damp and fire. A county medical society is not, as the uninstructed might fancy, a club in the sense that our social organizations are clubs, and even as a professional company it has more scope, authority and purpose than most of the pro- fessional and scientific bodies in this land. It exists for the purpose of advancing, not the interests of medicine, but the science of medicine itself. In- formation of great moment is imparted at its meetings, the physicians and surgeons giving the result of their experience, with drugs, in new operations and with all the appliances of their practice, and these matters are freely debated. Moreover, the fact of membership in the county society is a certifi- cate of competence. No quack, no practitioner of a narrow ism, no proprietor of a secret medicine, no patentee of a method or owner of a drug, is eligible to the company of the earnest and high-minded men who make the great body of the faculty, the world over. In the regular practice what is the discovery of onc is the property of all. The ethics of the profession require that the doctor of medicine shall first serve humanity. His reward will be as heearnsit.
It is, therefore, in the public interest that a suitable headquarters shall be provided for our Medical Society, in which to hold its meetings and discus- sions and to furnish a place for the bestowal of its books, for the thousands of volumes in its possession are in the truest sense a public property and are free to every citizen who desires or requires to make use of them. Our Medical Society-Continued
tions of such a building have been laid on Bedford Avenue, on a lot opposite the Twenty-third Regiment Armory, a central and convenient point, and when completed the house will be worthy of the city and of the organization. It will take a large sum to complete the building, and in order to raise the money a fair is to be held in the Thirteenth Regiment Armory, opening on the 23d inst. and closing on the 2d of February. It will be, without question, the most interesting and the largest thing of the kind ever seen in Brooklyn, at least since the fair of the Sanitary Commission, more than a generation ago, and the armory has more room and is every way better suited for such a function than was the Academy of Music. The art loan exhibition will in itself be a brilliant and surprising show. Ordinarily, a fair such as active and philanthropic women give in various halls and vestries to raise money for churches, libraries and charities is an affair that does not concern the whole public, but in this case the whole public is, or should be, interested. The medical fraternity is a safeguard of the whole people, regardless of race, creed or condition. It is safe to say that there is not a single physician, of this borough at least, who does not give more or less of his time and care and actual means for the good of the community. There are dozens of dispensaries and hospitals in which the entire staff serves without a penny of reward, and although this munificence induces some people to accept service they could pay for, it does incalculable good in the poorer quarters.
