THIRTEENTH REGIMENT, INFANTRY.
The thirteenth regiment, national guard, having volunteered its services, was one of the regiments selected in general orders, No. 8, general headquarters, state of New York, dated adjutant- general's office, Albany, April 27, 1898, to enter the service of the United States as a volunteer regiment.
The regiment, which consisted of ten companies, was in the same order required to recruit and organize as a twelve-company regiment.
In special orders, No. 72, A. G. O., May 1, 1898, the regiment was directed to report at the Flatbush avenue station of the Long Island railroad, Brooklyn, at 10 o'clock a. m., May 2d., to take train there for Camp Black, Hempstead, L. I., and on arrival at the camp to report to Major-General Charles F. Roe, command- ing national guard and camp. The regiment arrived duly at Camp Black.
General orders, No. 11, general headquarters, state of New York, dated Albany, May 3, 1898, directed the regiments ordered to the camp to perfect their organization, so that cach should consist of twelve companies of S1 enlisted men each. In this the regiment failed.
: May 7th, it was ordered back to its home station, excepting such of its members as had meanwhile positively volunteered to enter the service of the United States. These men were organized in four companies, under the command of Major George D. Russell, and were formed into a battalion, and as such assigned, May 9th, to the twenty-second regiment, forming companies, D, F, L and M of that regiment. They were mustered out with the twenty- second regiment, November 23, 1898.

FOURTEENTH REGIMENT, INFANTRY.
The fourteenth regiment, national guard, having volunteered its services, was one of the regiments selected in general orders. No. S, general headquarters, state of New York, dated adjutant- general's office, Albany, April 27, 1898, to enter the service of the United States as a volunteer regiment.
The regiment at the time consisted of ten companies, and at once commenced recruiting to fill its companies and to organize two additional ones. Its history to that date follows:
FOURTEENTH REGIMENT. (Second Brigade.)
Armory, Eighth avenue and Fifteenth street, Brooklyn.
This regiment was organized in 1847. It entered the service of the United States for three years in May, June and July, 1861; June 1, 1864, those entitled to discharges were mustered out and the re-enlisted men and recruits transferred to the fifth New York volunteers. During this service it was also known as the eighty- fourth New York volunteers. The regiment was in active service during the quarantine disturbances at Fire Island, September. 1892, and the Brooklyn motormen's strike, January, 1895, and received authority to place on the lances of its colors silver rings inscribed as follows:

Special orders, No. 72, A. G. O., May 1, 1898, ordered the regi- ment to report at 10 a. m., May 2d, at the Flatbush avenue station of the Long Island railroad, Brooklyn; there to take train for the camp at Hempstead, and on arrival at the latter place to report to Major-General Charles F. Roe, commanding national guard and the camp. This order was duly carried out.
Recruiting was continued to fill up and replace the men rejected by the medical officers, and the regiment was fully organ- ized as a twelve-company regiment under the provisions of gen- eral orders, No. 11, A. G. O., Albany, May 3, 1898. It was mus- tered in the service of the United States as follows: Companies A, G, K and M, May 13th; the other companies, May 16th, 1898, and became thereby the "fourteenth regiment, infantry, New York volunteers."
Pursuant to telegraphic instructions, dated war department, Washington, D. C., May 15, 1898, the regiment left camp at Hemp- stead on May 17th, and proceeded by rail to Camp George H. Thomas, Chickamauga Park, Ga., where it arrived on May 20th, and was assigned to the first brigade, first division, third army corps. The regiment remained in this camp, undergoing equip- ment, instructions, etc., until September 3d.
While in camp at Chickamauga Park, Ga., recruiting officers were sent in June to Brooklyn, who returned to the regiment early in July with 302 recruits.
Pursuant to general orders, No. 41, first division, headquarters third army corps, August 31, 1898, the regiment proceeded Sep- tember 3d, by rail to Camp Shipp, at Anniston, Alabama, arriv- ing there on September 4th, where it went into camp with the remainder of the brigade and division.
September 5th, the regiment received orders to prepare for muster-out and to proceed as soon as preliminary steps could be taken to corner Eighth avenue and Fifteenth street, Brooklyn, N. Y., where the officers and men would be granted leaves of absence and furloughs for thirty days, after which they would be

mustered out of the service of the United States. It left its camp at Anniston, Ala., September 14th, for Brooklyn, via Seaboard Air Line to Richmond and Washington, and via Pennsylvania railroad to Jersey City, arriving at the armory in Brooklyn, Sep- tember 16th, where it was mustered out of the service of the United States, October 27, 1898.
