SOUTH BEND, IND., Dec. 11th, 1886.
C. W. WILES, Corresponding Secretary.
DEAR SIR :-
I received an invitation to the re-union of the Tenth the morning I left for South Bend. I regret exceedingly that I shall be unable to attend the re-union this year. When I stop to think for a moment of the many brave hearts gathered together it gives me pain to feel that I cannot be with them to take them by the hand and give all of them a hearty grip for days of yore.
How many memories crowd before me as I look at the past,-First Elmira, where we were united and bound together as soldiers, then Gettysburg, where we left our first soldier comrade.
How well I remember that cold bleak day we marched into the Gettys- burg Cemetery and laid him in the cold ground, little dreaming that the day would come when he would be surrounded by thousands; then to Havre de Grace, Baltimore, Washington, then to Camp Bayard,

then our Stoneman raid, Brandy Station, Middleburg, and again to Gettysburg; this time to engage and participate in the grandest battle that the world has ever seen. But reminiscences crowd too thick and fast before me to jot them down in the limited space of a single letter. To enumerate its battles, its many engagements, its innumerable skir- un-hes, would take a volume. The regret I feel at not being able to meet the survivors of this grand old regiment, who I believe were never call- ed upon, however hard the duty, that ever failed or faltered.
I do not feel that I am called upon to say, as I heard a Colonel onee way of his regiment, that it was the best ever mustered into the U. S. ervice. I do not say that, but I do say that I never met a regiment of cavalry that I would prefer in a charge to the men of the old loth N. Y. Cavalry. Brave and honorable in action, they have carried with them into private life the same characteristics which marked them while fighting, and each one feels that it is an honor to have been a member. While you gather around the board enjoying yourselves, there will be times when your minds will revert to those who were once our comrades and companions, but who are now mustered into the grand army above.
Comrades, while I cannot be with you in body, I shall be with you in spirit; in imagination I shall be in your midst, taking you by the hand wil saying words that come from the heart, "God bless you, one and ull." Your comrade in F. C. and L. JOHN H. KEMPER.
At the conclusion of the evening session the comrades adjourned to the -pacious dining-rooms of our host, Talbott, where the beautifully spread tables delighted the eye, and gave promise that the inner man was to be generously regaled.
The following was the menu:
Blue Point Oysters on Half Shell.
Puree of Tomatoes. Ox Tail Soup.
Broiled Kennebec Salmon, Anchovy Sauce. Potato la Windsor. Roast Prime Ribs of Beef.
Roast Turkey with Cranberry Sauce.
Roast Saddle of Venison with California Jelly.
Roast Canvas Back Duck with Apple Sauce. Filet of Beef with Champignons. Chicken Salad with Mayonaise Dressing. Pot Pie of Partridge, a la Delmonico.
Mashed Potatoes. Green Peas. Tomatoes.
Steamed English Plum Pudding, Cream Sauce. Apple Pie. Lemon Pie. Charlotte de Russe. Vanilla Ice Cream.
Cocoanut Layer Cake. Empire Cake. Jelly Rolls. Fruit Cake. Mottoes. Lady Fingers.
Kisses.
Macaroons.
Grapes.
Bananas. Oranges.
Tea. Coffee.
After discussing this elaborate bill of fare with much gustatory satis- faction, the following toasts were read by Capt. N. D. Preston, and happily responded to by those whose names are appended.
1 Our Country-The best on earth. It is dearer to us now than ever before .- Lieut. H. P. THOMP- .
: Our Regiment -You know how it was yourself .- Major GEO. W. KENNEDY.
4. Our Anniversary-We hail with delight its annual recurrence, and trust the survivors of the old I enth may be enabled to clasp hands at many more re-unions .- C. W. WILES.
10
RE-UNION TENTH NEW YORK CAVALRY,
4. The Old Canteen-When it was full we were dry - when it was dry we were full .- Dr. H CRUMB.
5. Our Invited Guests-We welcome them to our festive board as fellows of the royal sort. -- Major AARON SAGER.
6. The Press-The public conservator-We felt and appreciated its influence for good in the dark days of the Rebellion. - W. W. WALSWORTH.
7. Our host-Though his charges are light we yield to his Tall but well filled larder .- Mr. TAL- BOTT.
8. Our Honored Dead-Hon. E. M. TuroN.
Capt. Bliss, Capt. White, E. O. Van Brocklin, Capt, Van Tuyl, Capt Perry, Major - Poole, and others responded to the call for remarks but Major Vanderbilt as an after dinner speaker, captured the napkin and the applause of his comrades.
The following ladies were present: Mrs. N. D. Preston, Mrs. D. Get- man, Jr., Mrs. Mark Brownell, Mrs. M. R. Woodruff, and Miss Bing- ham, daughter of Comrade Geo. Bingham.
The banquet was broken up at a late hour, and many comrades made preparation for leaving for their homes on the early morning trains.
Joyful as had been the meeting, the thought of so soon parting was a sad one, and many brave hearts that could charge the infantry of Lee's army or meet the sabres of Stuart's horsemen without faltering, took the parting hand with moist eyes and trembling speech. The last farewells were said, joined with the hope and determination to meet again in Buffalo next December. It is safe to predict that every comrade who was present at the re-union will be in Buffalo next year, health and circunistances permitting.
Your Corresponding Secretary takes the liberty to observe that, as in days of yore, company A, under the leadership of their gallant Capt- ain, Perry, had staying qualities unsurpassed by any others of the jovial band, and the Headquarters room rang with their laughter and joyous voices, as the old stories were re-told, until after the morning sun ushered in the closing hours of this most happy re-union of the old Tenth.
In closing this report it is not only just and proper, but a pleasure to acknowledge the valuable assistance that many comrades rendered to make the re-union a success.
To Captain Preston we are especially indebted. The large amount of fine printing he furnished at less than first cost, and his assistance in a thousand ways, will be appreciated by his comrades.
And to Lieutenant Mark Brownell whose ready hand and willing heart were at our service day or night, helping to lighten our labors, we are under many obligations, Also Major Weed, Major Kennedy, Lieut- enant Hayes, Capt. Perry, Comrade Van Brocklin, and many others, for whose councils and assistance we acknowledge our grateful appreciation.
To Mr. Talbott and Mr. Acker of the Empire House and their corps of assistants we extend our thanks, and especially for the generous ten- der of their spacious hall for our meeting.
Comrades, as the years roll by the ties of old comradeship become more sacred and more solemn. When we first left our homes we were boys or young men in the bright bloom of early manhood. But the
11

hardships of the campaign and camp have left their marks on nearly all of us. Some are prematurely old; others are bowed down with the in- firmities of age and broken in health; while others, that yet live bear the blight of the noxious prison pen, or of insidnous disease, brought on by the arduous service in the field that made glorious the record of the loth N. Y. Cavalry. Let the rising generation take heed of the record your sabres carved on the pages of history, for in the fabric of the grand old army of the Potomac the 10th N. Y. Cavalry held an honored place. starting with less than eight hundred men it had numbered upon its roll before the close of the war nearly three thousand names, and their blood stains every battle field from Antietam to Appomattox. Upon the death roll of the battle field and prison pen its victims may be counted by hundreds.
Let us grasp the comrades hand with a closer grip and resolve that we will meet once each year while our lives are spared to recite the deeds of our heroic dead and tell the old stories over, and answer to the roll call, until we too are summoned to that grand bivouac from whence no soldier returns.
May God bless and prosper you all, is the prayer of your faithful com- rade,
Cortland, N. Y., Dec. 20th, 1886.
C. W. WILES. Corresponding Secretary.
RANDOM SHOTS.
W. W. WILLIAMS, Company D, had the misfortune to recently lose his hearing.
LIEUTENANT Edgar Hinkley, of La Grange, Ind., was among the happiest of those present.
THE genial Capt. John Van Tuyl, of Toronto, Canada, was gladly welcomed by his comrades.
CAPTAIN PRESTON brought many relics and records with him, and was ceaseless in his efforts to make every one welcome and happy.
To MAJOR M. AUER, of Syracuse, the comrades extend their thanks, for material loaned and many courtesies extended during the re-union.
To THE Press of Syracuse every comrade is indebted, for the kindly treatment at their hands, and for the very full report of the proceedings.
THE venerable Captain Loomis, of Greene, N. Y., seemed to take a new lease of life as he grasped the hands of "his boys," as he used to vall them.
THANKS are due the Rev. J. C. Grumbine, of Syracuse, for attendance on the meeting, and the supplication for Divine blessings on its deliber- ations.
THE old Veterinary Sergeant, Hiram B. Dodge, was as " horse-pitable" a- ever, and had not forgotten that there was "a good many holes in the -kimmer."
12
RE-UNION TENTH NEW YORK CAVALRY,
LIEUTENANT M. R. Woodruff, once badly wounded, stripped and robbed by the enemy, and left for dead on the field, was received with a hearty greeting.
CAPTAIN A. T. and Dr. L. W. Bliss, prosperous lumbermen and salt manufacturers, of Saginaw, Mich., were with the comrades for the first time since the war.
LIEUTENANT H. P. Thompson, came from the western border of Mis- souri, to meet with the comrades. His wound received at Samaria Church, has never healed.
ERIE O. VAN BROCKLIN, Secretary of the Buffalo Fire Department, did not look like a man who had spent eighteen months in a Southern prison, but he was there just the same.
JUDGE N. A. Reynolds, of Coldwater, Mich., formerly Lieutenant of Company A, the first to arrive and one of the last to leave, pronounced the meeting one of the happiest events of his life.
THE brave and gallant Captain Vanderbilt met with a cordial recep- tion by his comrades. He appeared as young as when in his hip-boots and corduroy pants, mounted on " Black Dan," he led Co. L in many a desperate fight.
HON. M. M. BROWN, Company L, of Freetown, N. Y., who had his teeth extracted by a Confederate rifle-ball at Dinwiddie C. H. without breaking his jaw, was present, and enjoyed himself immensely. He got away with his rations, as usual.
THURSDAY morning, (December 16th), a large delegation of Company A men went to Fayetteville, to make glad the heart of their former Cap- tain, H. S. Pratt, who is an invalid. The big heart of the little captain was made happy. Both he and his estimable wife were much affected by the meeting.
One of the best speeches of the evening was the response to the toast of "The Press," by W. W. Wolsworth, of The Syracuse Standard. Mr. W's years are few, but his promise as an orator, flattering. He acquitted himself in a manner highly complimentary to himself and the profession he represented. His speech was a gem.
THE death of Captain Thomas W. Johnson, at his home in Wolcott, N. Y., Nov. 7th, 1886, east a shadow of gloom and disappointment over many of his comrades, who had hoped to meet him. He was held in high esteem by every member and his services with the regiment and suffering in Southern prisons will never be forgotten. His record needs no eulogy. It was brave and honorable in every respect.
AN OLD SOLDIER REMEMBERED.
On Wednesday last the famous old Tenth N. Y. Cavalry held a re-union and banquet at the Empire House, Syracuse, and nearly two hundred of the old veterans gathered from all sections of the country, assembled around the festive board. The boys had a good time, as might have been expected. During the day a plan was formed to pay a visit to one

of their old comrades whose infirmities prevented him from participating in the events of the day, and a party of nine left on the early train for Fayetteville, and called upon Captain H. S. Pratt, at his residence on Elm street. The visit was a complete surprise to Captain Pratt, and the kindly greetings of his old comrades almost unmanned him. It was a graceful recognition of the ties which bind together the hearts of the veterans, and his heart was cheered by their hearty expressions of affec- tion and good will. Their stay was short as they were obliged to leave on the next train, but the memory of their visit will long be a source of gratification to the Captain. The following constituted the party: Maj. N. D. Preston and Mrs. Preston, of Pittsburgh, Pa .; Capt. W. R. Perry, of Minetto; Lieut. H. P. Thompson, of Lathrop, Mo .; Lieut. H. E. Hayes, of New York; Lieut. Mark Brownell, of Cortland; Wm. A. Mor- gun, of Preble; J. P. MeWethey, of Victory; M. E. Douglass, of Red Creek, and E. W. Stark, of Ledyard, N. Y. Mrs. Preston came out to visit Capt. and Mrs. Pratt on Wednesday, returning with the party to Syracuse, on Thursday morning .- Fayetterille Recorder, Dec. 20, 1886.
