Townsend, Horace E., p. o. Pavilion Centre, N. Y., son of the late Elbert Town- send and Emily Olmsted Townsend, was born in the town of Pavihon, Genesee county, N. Y., April 20, 1904, on the home farm, which he n xe owns and successfully manages, raising thoroughbred stock, with a dairy, shipping milk ; also with techog facilities and modern improvements in silos, etc. On September 10, 1941, Mr. Townsend married Grave, daughter of Albert P. and Katharine Holbrook Hendee. They have had three children. Pearl, bora March 25, 1587, died Aptil 11, 1955; Spencer A., born October 24, 1891, and Gladys Emily, born December 9, 1597. Mr. Town-end now holds the office of guise of the prace, has been a delegate to the diferent Republican conventions and served on the Republican county committee. The late Hon Elbert Townsend was one of Genesee county's most prominent and respected citizens, he was not only well and favorably known in his own country for the breeding of American Merino sheep, but in foreign countries as well. At the time of his death, which occurred in 1990. . Onthe Valley Stock Farm" contained imported Holsten cartie, Percheron houses, and American Merinos. The products of his flock came into competition with those of different parts of the world, and were awarded the highest prices at the Paris Exposition in 1522 Mr. Townsend held prominent offices in the Genesce County Agricultural Society and was a life member in the State Society. For years he was an officer of the American Merito Sheep-Breeders' Association. In 1-72 and 1878 he represented his county in the State Legislature, at, the age of thirty-two years His father, Ashley Townsend. was a native of Vermont and the inventor of the grain separator now in use; the latter was first manufactured at Pavilion Centre. Scarff. Rev. Jame- Malison pastor of the regular Baptist church of Bethany Cen- ter for the past twenty three years, is a son of Joshua II. and Lydia (Stoutemeter) Scarff, born in Rockingham county, Viggima, February 26, 1829. He was graduated from Dennison University in the class of 1 52, receiving the degree of A. M., and from the Theological Seminary of Rochester in 1855. His first pastorate was at St. Mary's, Ohio, where he remained until 1968. when he removed to Bethany, where he has since resided. In 1916 he accepted his present charge and through his labors the church society was largely increase 1. On June 11, 1857, he married Emily Elliott who died in August, 1995, leaving four children: Frank E., Luella E , Mary E and Phoebe L. Since 1565 Rev. Mr. Scarff has resided in Bethany and here he is enjoying the antamn of his life m a beautiful home, in a community in which he has done so much to advance its welfare and elevate its social and moral life.
Howard, Aaron E., who for ten years past has been numbered among the most successful business mon of the town of Bethany, was born in Grafton, Vt., Febinary 1, 1836. Ile is a son of Jonathan and Hannah . Loveland) Howard. His father, who was a physician, was born in Winchester, N. H., March 27, 1805; his mother was born in Grafton, Vt., January 26. 1-05. In 1-45 they removel to Perry, Wyoming county, N. Y., where Aaron E. Howard received in the public schools a hbetal edu- cation. He was engaged in teaching for two terms, then entered the service of Charles Pritchard as a clerk in his store, where he remained for eighteen months. He was variously employed until 1ssi, when he located in Londen, N. Y., where he has since carried on a prosperous mercat.the business. On May 4. 1962, Mr Howard married Lois, eldest daughter of Abraham and Eliza Richards) Vorhees, they have one daughter, Mahel (Mts George Morse) Mr. Howard is one of the prominent members of Bethany Grange and is an honored and respected citizen.
Ludlum, Ilerbert H , p. o. Oakfield, N. Y., was born in Oakfield, May 11, 1835. His father, Joseph Ludlum, was a native of England, and came to Genesee county about 1430; he was a cooper by trade and married Hannah Smithhurst; he died in 1838. Herbert II. Ludlum was educated in the common schools and has always been a farmer. He married Frances, daughter of John Allen; they have three chil- dren. Hattie R., Howard E and Clarke B. Mr. Ludlum is a practical farmer of good repate, and meris the respect and good-will of his fellow citizens which he has earned by a consistent, honorable course in life.
Caple, Henry, was born near Bristol, England, in 1841. IHis father, Robert C'aple. was a native of England, born in 1819, and came to Oakfield in 1836 Ile returned to England in 15339, married Sarah Sainsbury and the family came to Oakfield in 1849, where he estalishud the merchant tailoring business for Burden & March. He served four years in the Civil war in the 49th N. Y. Vols, and Sth Heavy Artillery. he died in Elba in 1998 Henry Caple was educated in the common schools and Cary Seminary, he has been treasarer of the seminary for fourteen years, served two terms a : supervisor and has hell many other responsible positions. and. associated with A H. Greene of Byron, established the business of banking. under the title of The Exchange Bank. At the end of four years he purchased his partner's interest and has since conducted a general banking business alone. Mr. Wright is one of the representative men of Oakfield, of sterling integrity, and takes an active interest in church an I school matters. He has held various local offices, as president of the village board and of the board of education. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he is a trustee and treasurer. He is also a trustee of Genesee Wesleyan Seminary at Lima, N. Y.
Reed, Juhus W., was born in Simsbury, Conn., February 11, 1821, a son of David and Electa (Tuller Reed David Reed was born in Danbury, Conn .. November 23, 1758, and died June 5, 1402. Dunlap, William C., p. o. OuktieM. N. Y., was born in Orleans county, N. Y., No- vember 16, 1820, a sonof Will am and Elisabeth ( Hunt) Danlap. His father was a native of Connectient, and came to Orleans county when a young man; he died in August, 1571. William C Danlap secured his ellacation in the common schools of Shelby, attending at the obl log school house. Mr. Dunlap is one of the representa- tive farmers of Genesee county. In 1843 he came to this county and settled op the farm which he not ouc ques. He has been identified with all the public enterprise- of the town of Oakfieldl. He has been particularly energetic, enterprising and liberal in all that pertains to pabk aff urs, any undertaking for the benefit of the town al- ways has been care of tres support; in his neighborhood he has borne more than his share of the labors, serving as school trustee and pathmaster almost continuously for years. He has held the offices of assessor, overseer of the poor, highway commis- sioner, and trustee of the sennaary for thirty years-always with satisfaction to his fellow townsmen No one was ever more ready to assist a neighbor than he, and he is benevolent and durare to an unusual degree; he is always called upon in troubles of every nature, being clear-headed, impartial and sound in his views; and has always lived an exempliry energetic and active hfe, with no derogatory habits. Zurhorst, Dr. Augustes F. G., p. o. Oakfield, N. Y., was born in Monroe county, N. Y., September 26, 1917. His father Augustus D. Zurhorst, was a native of Eng- land and for seven year- was a surgeon in the British marine service. He married Mary Ann Estil; came to Monroe county in 1935, and died September 15, 1573. Dr. A. F. G. Zurhorst was educated in the Doolittle Institute, Weathersfield Springs. and Cleveland Medical College He began his practice in Alabama and in 1994 came to Oakfield, where he has been very successful. Dr. Zurhorst is a Democrat and has taken quite an active interest in party matter. He served as supervisor of Ala- hama, and was for one year one of the Session, justices of the county. In 1975 Dr. Zurhorst married Emma A. Colley of Lockport. N. Y., they had two daughters. Jola Jean and Katherine Elizabeth. Fola J. died August 26. 1595.
Mayback, Jacob. p. o. East Dak Feld, N. Y . was born December 6, 1859, a son of Gott- heb Mayback, a native of Germany, will come to Genesce county about 1813, and Christina Dunaworth, his wire Jacob May back was educated in the common schools. He ran a general store for four years at East Oaktiell and since then has been a farmer. He has been constable for mis yous. In 1844 he married Cora Haxton. daughter of Samuel Haxton, they had two sons Ernest and Harry, both deceased. Mr. Mayback is one the progressive farmsets of Oakfield, and as a citizen ranks with those who have at heart the welfare of the town.

His father was a wagon maker and dealer in lumber, he was justice of the peace for twelve years and town clerk two years. A. E. Nash was educated in the old log house and has always been a farmer. He married Harriet, daughter of George W. Gardner, they have one daughter, Abriam. Mr. Nash is one of the representative men of Oakfield, of steri- ing integrity, and has always been interested in the progress of his town, always taking an active part in church and school matters.

Grinnell, Albert A . p. o. Oakfield, N. Y., was born in the town of Shelby, Orleans county, N. Y., June 12, 1565, a son of Wills A and Lura Avery Grinnell. Ile was educated in the Albion High School and Rochester Business University. He came to Oakfield in 1987 and started in the produce, coal, lumber, carriage and bicycle business. Ile is the owner of the large warehouse near the West Shore station, and has built up an extensive and successful grain and produce business. His father was a native of Devonshire, England, and came to Genesee county in 1943, where he died May 14. 1896. Mr. Stevens removed with his parents to Oakfield thea called Caryville, when but four months ofl, and has stace reshled there He received his education at Caty Collegiate Semicary. Moulthrop. M. Nelsen was born in Otsego, N. Y .. April 25. 1522, a son of Josiah and Sophia (Lanektom Moutthrop, and was educated in the common schools. He engaged in mercantile business and in 1945 went into business at Albion ; in 1817 went to Milwaukee and from there to Oshkosh, remaining there six years and with the first sheriff of Winnebago county under the State law. In 1859 he came to Ella and engaged in farming. Mr. Moalthrop married Clarissa, daughter of Sheited Parker, in 1544, and they hai two sons Samuel P. Moulthrop, principal of Wash- ington Grammar School, Rochester, and Edwin N. Mrs. Moulthrop died in 1ss! He married again Mrs. Amat, la Davis, a sister of his first wite. Mr. Moulthrop is one of the useful men of his town. He served as justice of the peace twenty years and was for several years one of the Sessions justices of the county. He has always taken an intelligent interest in school and church matters, and has sought to advance the best interests of his town and its people.

Wilhan Allen was educated in the common schools. In 1-50 he married Rebecca Carr, who bore him three children Mary Jennie and Frank W. Mary died December 12, 1876, and Jeunie died February 10, 1895. Mrs. Allen died April 26, 1890.

His father, Matthew W Heal, was a native of England and came to the United States in 1836 with his par- ents, John and Mary Heal, who settled in Oakfield. M. W.
