On April 25, 1914, Mr. Boyer married Miss Antoinette Valley, of Ogdensburg, the daughter of Alexandria and Eleanor (Goyette) Valley. Mr. Valley was born in Canada and died in 1908. His wife died in 1913. They are buried in Ogdensburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Boyer have been born the following children: 1. Felix, Jr., born April 14, 1915. 2. Jacqueline, born Dec. 1, 1917. 3. Fred T. Stickley is well and favorably known in Ogdensburg, where he is superintendent of the Standard Shade Roller Corporation. He was born at Saginaw, Mich., Feb. 9, 1865, the son of Oliver and Abbie (Earl) Stickley.
Oliver Stickley, who died in 1907, was a native of Batavia, Genessee County, N. Y. He was reared and educated in Oswego and during most of his life lived in Michigan where he was interested in the lumber busi- ness. He then was identified with the Minetto Shade Cloth Company for 12 years. His wife was born at Bridgeport, Mich., and died in 1905. Mr. Stickley was a Republican and held membership in the Methodist Episco- pal Church. There were two sons in the Stickley family: 1. Fred T., the subject of this sketch. 2. Oscar, who is interested in the manufacture of shingles, at Seattle, Wash.
Fred T. Stickley attended the public schools of Saginaw, Mich., and spent four years in the employ of the Saginaw Shingle Mills. He then

became identified with the Saginaw Manufacturing Company, makers of shade rollers, and he was connected with this concern until 1888, when he went to Minetto as superintendent of the Minetto Shade Cloth Company. Mr. Stickley came to Ogdensburg in 1915 to accept his present position as superintendent of the Standard Shade Roller Corporation.
In 1887 Mr. Stickley was united in marriage with Miss Kittie Parks, of Saginaw, the daughter of James and Catherine (McDonald) Parks. Mr. Parks was born at Watkins Glen, N. Y., and died in 1912. His wife was a native of Nova Scotia and died in 1925. Both are buried in Sag- inaw. Kittie (Parks) Stickley died Aug. 13, 1929, and is buried in Og- densburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Stickley were born two sons: 1. Walter James, born in 1888. He is master mechanic with the Standard Shade Roller Corporation. He married Miss Bessie Johnson, of Ogdensburg, and they have a daughter, Barbara Johnson, born Nov. 27, 1920. 2. George Oliver, born in 1890. He is engaged in the grocery business at Minetto. He married Miss Ellen Wauth, of Minetto.
Mr. Stickley has always been a. Republican and in 1931 was elected alderman from the second ward in Ogdensburg. He is a member of the Congregational Church and belongs to Frontier City Lodge No. 422, F. & A. M., of Oswego.
George J. Madden is president of the Madden Coal Corporation, one of the important industries of Ogdensburg, and he is recognized as a leader in financial circles throughout the North Country. Mr. Madden was born at Middletown, Orange County, N. Y., Oct. 23, 1888, the son of Theodore F. and Emma (Doolittle) Madden.
Theodore F. Madden, born at Yonkers, N. Y., lives retired at Middle- town. For a number of years he was interested in the real estate busi- ness in the latter city. He is a Democrat and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. His wife died in 1890 and is buried in Middletown. Their children were: 1. Edward, died in infancy. 2. John, died in infancy. 3. Frank, who died in 1924. 4. Bertha, who died in infancy. 5. George J., the subject of this sketch.
George J. Madden was reared and educated in Middletown. He began his business career in 1907 with the Donald Steamship Company, 18 Broad- way, New York City, and was connected with their offices until 1916. At that time he went to Montreal as manager of the Canada Shipping Com- pany. When the firm was amalgamated two years later with the George Hall Corporation of Ogdensburg, Mr. Madden came to this city as secre- tary for the new corporation, also being in charge of their steamship operations. In August, 1926, he founded the Madden Coal Corporation.

The officers were: Mr. Madden, president; J. Meehan, vice president; and Harry M. Atwood, secretary. Mr. Atwood retired from the firm in Jan- uary, 1930, and the corporation is now controlled by Messrs. Madden & Meehan. They are owners of the Joseph W. Simpson, a 2,000 ton freighter, which operates on the Great Lakes.
On Sept. 3, 1913, Mr. Madden was united in marriage with Miss Wini- fred Marie Deeney, of New York City, the daughter of John and Theresa Deeney, natives of Ireland. The former died in 1918 and the latter in 1924. They are buried at Jersey City, N. J. Mr. and Mrs. Madden have three children: 1. Winifred Marie, born Sept. 5, 1915, a graduate of St. Mary's Academy, attends New Rochelle College. 2. George Joseph, Jr., born Jan. 25, 1916. 3. Ethel Elizabeth, born Oct. 29, 1918.
Since 1929 Mr. Madden has served as alderman from the Third Ward. During 1925-28 he was a member of the Board of Control for the City of Ogdensburg. He is president of St. John's Hospital Corporation, and member of the Board of Managers, Ogdensburg City Orphanage. Politi- cally, Mr. Madden is a Democrat. He and his family hold membership in St. Mary's Catholic Church, and he belongs to the Knights of Columbus, B. P. O. Elks, Rotary Club, Century Club, Ogdensburg Country Club, and Chamber of Commerce.
Leon L. Samson, M. D., is among the highly successful professional men of Jefferson County, engaged in the practice of medicine at Alex- andria Bay. He was born at Parishville, St. Lawrence County, Aug. 18, 1878, the son of Lafayette and Elmina (Eastman) Samson.
Lafayette Samson lived in St. Lawrence County throughout his life and was a prosperous farmer. He was born at Parishville, in 1845, and died in 1901. His wife was born at Stockholm in 1851 and died in 1901. Both are buried at Southville, N. Y. He was a Republican and held mem- bership in the Universalist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Samson were the par- ents of two sons: Leon L., the subject of this sketch; and Frank L., who lives on the old homestead.
Leon L. Samson attended district school No. 13 near Stockholm in St. Lawrence County, and in 1900 was graduated from Potsdam Normal School. He began his teaching career in the former school and also taught at Childwold, Ft. Jackson, and Nicholville. In 1905 he was gradu- ated with honors from the Medical School of the University of Vermont, and became a licensed physician, Sept. 29, 1905. He began his professional career at Nicholville and after four years removed to Dickinson Center, N. Y., where he successfully practiced until July, 1923. He has since been

located at Alexandria Bay. During his long career as a physician and surgeon, Dr. Samson has taken graduate work at the Good Samaritan Dispensary, New York City, under the direction of Dr. William N. Berk- ley ; the New York Society Lying-In Hospital; New York Post Graduate Hospital; and Roosevelt Hospital, New York City. He served as coroner of Franklin County for twelve years, and is a member of the Jefferson County, New York State, and American Medical Associations.
In 1902 Doctor Samson was united in marriage with Miss Anna Chand- ler, the daughter of Henry B. and Julia (Preston) Chandler, who were natives of St. Lawrence County, and residents of Nicholville, where Mr. Chandler was identified with the hotel business. Both are deceased. Doctor and Mrs. Samson have two children: 1. Ruth Elmina, a graduate of Alexandria Bay High School, and French Hospital, New York City. She is a registered nurse and is connected with the surgical department of French Hospital. 2. Loyal C., a graduate of Alexandria Bay High School, lives at home.
Dr. Samson is a Republican, and is affiliated with Elk Lodge, F. and A. M. No. 577, Nicholville, Past Master; Elk Lodge, R. A. M. No. 197, Past Secretary; Franklin Commandery, K. T. No. 60; Media Temple; and Nu Sigma Nu fraternity. He is president of the Kiwanis Club of Alex- andria Bay.
James A. McGillis .- The City of Ogdensburg lost one of its most prominent and representative citizens in the death of James A. McGillis on Feb. 23, 1919. He was a native of New York, born at Watertown, Feb. 11, 1867, the son of Lauchlin and Almira Miranda (Petus) McGillis.
Lauchlin McGillis was the founder of the busines in Ogdensburg, which bears his name today. He was born in Dundee County, Canada, and his wife was also a native of Canada. He received his education in the public schools of Fort Covington and in 1859 came to Watertown, where he was interested in the furniture business until 1876. He purchased the store of Henry Rockwell in Ogdensburg in that year and became associated with the late A. M. Herriman. The business was conducted at 16-18 Lake Street, and later was moved to 124 Ford Street, where it was con- tinued by Mr. McGillis until his death on Sept. 23, 1906. His wife died in June, 1910. Both are buried in Ogdensburg. Mr. McGillis was a Re- publican, a member of the First Methodist Church, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. To Mr. and Mrs. McGillis were born the following children: 1. Catherine Isabelle, who died in 1922, was the wife of Robert T. Baker, who is vice president of the McGillis Furniture Company. 2. The education of James A. McGillis was received in the public schools of Watertown and Ogdensburg, and throughout his life he was interested in the business which had been founded by his father in Ogdensburg. Upon the death of his father in 1906 he continued the business with his brother, Charles S., and it was incorporated in 1910 with James A. Mc- Gillis as president. He served in that capacity until his death and was succeeded in the office by his widow, Harriet McGillis. Mr. McGillis also had extensive land holdings and numerous business interests in St. Law- rence County.
In January, 1885, Mr. McGillis was united in marriage with Miss Harriet Judson, of Ogdensburg, the daughter of Daniel and Harriet (Bean) Judson. The former died in 1876 and the latter in 1889. Both were natives of New York and are buried at Ogdensburg. To Mr. and Mrs. McGillis were born two children: 1. James J., born in 1886, died in infancy. 2. Harriet Marjorie, born in 1891, died in 1901.
Mr. McGillis was always a Republican. He was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church, and his lodge affiliations were: Ogdensburg Lodge, F. & A. M., No. 705; Ogdensburg Chapter, R. A. M., No. 63; Order of Eastern Star, No. 71; B. P. O. Elks; Maccabees; charter member of the Knights of Pythias; and belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, No. 590. He also belonged to the Ogdensburg Gun Club.
Ernest William Hopwood is well and favorably known in Ogdensburg, where he is the proprietor of the West Side Flower Shop, 118 King Street. He is a native of England, born at Cheltenham, March 3, 1871, the son of William and Harriet (Townsend) Hopwood.
William Hopwood, who died in 1927, lived in England throughout his life. His wife was also born there and died in 1916. In his father's busi- ness he acquired a thorough knowledge of flowers and for many years owned and operated the finest flower shop in Cheltenham. He was a Lib- eral and held membership in the Episcopal Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Hop- wood were born two children: 1. Ernest William, the subject of this sketch. 2. Ella Mabel, who died in 1928, was the wife of Clarence James, of Cheltenham.

Ernest William Hopwood attended private schools in England and as a young man was identified with his father's business. In 1889 he went to West Central Canada. He returned to his native land, however, in 1891, and remained with his father's business until 1896 when he came to the United States and settled in the State of New York. Mr. Hopwood was identified with various flower gardens in Rochester, N. Y., Madison, N. J., Stattsburg, N. Y., and Morris Plains, N. J. He came to Ogdensburg in January, 1910, and until 1922 was florist and gardener for the St. Law- rence State Hospital. He then went to Malone, N. Y., and assisted in the management of the store and business of Luther Haskell, florist. In 1923 Mr. Hopwood returned to Ogdensburg and in that year established his present business.
On April 12, 1914, Mr. Hopwood married Miss Mary Farrell, of Mait- land, Ontario, the daughter of Thomas and Bridget (Burns) Farrell, na- tives of Ireland. Both are deceased and are buried in Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. Hopwood have a son, William Ernest, born June 21, 1919.
Mr. Hopwood is a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and belongs to the Knights of Columbus.
Sidney W. Smith, Jr .- One of the prominent citizens and able young attorneys of Ogdensburg is Sidney W. Smith, Jr., who is a veteran of the World War. He was born in this city, Oct. 10, 1893, the son of Sid- ney W. and Julia (Leahy) Smith.
Sidney W. Smith, Sr., died in Ogdensburg, May 15, 1916. He had lived here during his early life and later was located at Cornwall, Ont., where he was engaged as a hotel clerk. He later returned to Ogdens- burg and established a wholesale liquor business, with which he was successfully identified with until the time of his death. His widow was born in Ogdensburg and resides at 332 State Street. Mr. Smith was a Democrat, and served as alderman of the second ward. He was affiliated with the Masonic and Elk lodges and belonged to the Chippewa Yacht Club. He held membership in the Episcopal Church. Mrs. Smith is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. To Mr. and Mrs. Smith were born three children: 1. Mary Frances, married Erhard Schmidt, lives at Pittsburgh, Pa. 2. Helen R., married William C. Giles, lives at Spring- field, Mass. 3. Sidney W., Jr., the subject of this sketch.
Sidney W. Smith, Jr., attended Ogdensburg Free Academy and spent three years at Cornell University. He was then identified with his father's business in this city until May, 1918, at which time he enlisted for service in the World War. He was transferred from the motor trans-

port service to the artillery corps in August, 1918, and was stationed at Camp Taylor, Louisville, Ky., at the time of the signing of the armistice. Upon his return to Ogdensburg, Mr. Smith became interested in the whole- sale grocery business as president of the firm of Smith & Briggs. He disposed of his business interests in 1922 and entered Albany Law School from which he received the degree of LL. B. in 1925. He has since been engaged in successful practice at Ogdensburg, with offices at 325 State Street.
On Aug. 26, 1919, Mr. Smith was united in marriage with Miss Margery Daly, of Ogdensburg, the daughter of Dr. Walter S. and Elizabeth (Moran) Daly. Dr. Daly, who died March 19, 1918, was a leading sur- geon of Ogdensburg, where he specialized in the treatment of diseases of the eye, ear, nose, and throat. He attended St. Mary's Jesuit College, Montreal, and was a graduate of McGill University. He also took grad- uate work in New York City, Berlin, and Vienna. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, St. Lawrence County, New York State, and American Medical Associations. He held membership in St. Mary's Catholic Church and belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Century Club, and Ogdensburg Club. Politically he was a Demo- crat and served as a member of the Board of Education. His wife was born at Prescott, Ont., and died in Ogdensburg, April 3, 1898. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are the parents of two children: 1. Sidney W., III., born May 13, 1920. 2. Moran M., born June 1, 1921. Both attend St. Mary's Academy.
Mr. Smith is a Republican, and during 1927-28 served as supervisor of Ogdensburg. At the present time he is chairman of the Ogdensburg Municipal Civil Service Commission. He holds membership in the Cen- tury Club, Ogdensburg Club, Country Club, and American Legion. He and his family are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
John M. Nichols .- A substantial and widely known citizen of St. Law- rence County is John M. Nichols, who is probation officer, with headquar- ters in Ogdensburg. He was born in this city, Jan. 11, 1884, the son of Charles E. and Anna (Snowden) Nichols.
Charles E. Nichols was a native of Ogdensburg and died there, July 4, 1931. His widow is a resident of Ogdensburg and was born at Kalamazoo, Mich. Mr. Nichols was reared and educated in Ogdensburg and was a carpenter by trade. He later successfully conducted a lumber business on the site of the present armory. He was a Democrat and held membership in the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Nichols' parents had come to New York

from Vermont about 1800 and settled on two farms-near Black Lake. The original Nichols homestead is still in the possession of members of this family. To Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Nichols were born eight chil- dren, as follows: 1. Marian Belle, who died in 1874. 2. Lulu Maude, de- ceased, was the wife of Burton J. Earl. 3. Miriam Luella, married Oscar S. Best, lives at Mt. Kiscoe, N. Y. 4. Charles Henry, retired, lives at Ogdensburg. 5. Isabella, married Wilmont R. Hobbs, lives at Lisbon. 6. John M., the subject of this sketch. 7. Anna Estelle, married William M. Cardwell, lives at Ogdensburg. 7. Clark F., master mechanic, St. Lawrence State Hospital, Ogdensburg.
The boyhood of John M. Nichols was spent in Ogdensburg and he is a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and the Washington Detective Training School, in Washington, D. C. From January, 1904, until May, 1913, he was identified with the First National Bank of Ogdensburg in a clerical capacity. He then managed a coal and wood business for a year, after which he accepted the appointment as county probation officer on Feb. 18, 1915. He also is probation officer in the Children's Court.
On Sept. 29, 1909, Mr. Nichols married Miss Nellie Haley, the daughter of Charles and Isabelle (Woodley) Haley, of Ogdensburg. The former lives in this city, and the latter died in 1927. To John M. and Nellie (Haley) Nichols have been born five children: 1. Howard Haley, born Oct. 16, 1910, attends St. Lawrence University, class of 1932. 2. James Snowden, born July 13, 1912, attends St. Lawrence University, class of 1935. 3. Helen Isabel, born March 31, 1914, attends Ogdensburg Free Academy. 4. Frederick Clark, born Jan. 26, 1917, attends Ogdensburg Free Academy. 5. Allen Morris, born July 12, 1923, died May 11, 1925.
Politically Mr. Nichols is a Republican. He is an active member of the Presbyterian Church, and is trustee of the Masonic Lodge. He is also secretary, treasurer and director of the Theodore Roosevelt International Highway Association.
John C. Tulloch .- Among St. Lawrence County's most prominent at- torneys is John C. Tulloch, of Ogdensburg, who has also been collector of United States customs for St. Lawrence District No. 7 since 1923. He was born at Louisville, St. Lawrence County, Oct. 22, 1869, the son of John and Amanda (Shaver) Tulloch.
John Tulloch was a native of Scotland and his wife was born in On- tario, Canada. He was brought to the United States by his parents at the age of five years, and they located near Louisville, N. Y. Throughout his life he was a successful farmer. He died in May, 1922, and his wife died

in 1917. Both are buried in St. Matthews Cemetery, Woodlands, Ontario. Mr. Tulloch was a Republican and held membership in the Presbyterian Church. There were three children in the Tulloch family: 1. Agnes M., deceased. 2. John C., the subject of this sketch. 3. Minnie, deceased.
The boyhood of John C. Tulloch was spent on his father's farm and he attended the district schools. He was graduated from high school at Cornwall, Ontario, and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Albert College, now affiliated with Toronto University, in 1893. He then at- tended the Law School of New York University during 1896-97 and was admitted to the bar in December, 1898. Mr. Tulloch immediately estab- lished a private practice at Ogdensburg, with offices at 76 Ford Street, and in 1920 he removed to his present offices at 209 Ford Street. From 1901 until 1918 Mr. Tulloch held the office of referee of bankruptcy in St. Lawrence County.
Mr. Tulloch was a director of the St. Lawrence County Trust Com- pany for eight years, and a director of the Ogdensburg Savings & Loan Association and its attorney. He was president of the Northern Coun- ties Realty Company for 16 years, president of the L. S. Land Company, and president of the R. T. R. Realty Company.
On Dec. 22, 1898, Mr. Tulloch was united in marriage with Miss Alice M. Cameron, of Shakespeare, Ontario, the daughter of Rev. John J. and Susie (Hawksworth) Cameron. Mr. Cameron died in 1921 and his wife died in 1899. Both were natives of Nova Scotia. He was a minister of the Presbyterian Church and served as pastor of a church at Athens, Ontario. To Mr. and Mrs. Tulloch have been born three children: 1. Eliza- beth, born Jan. 12, 1901, a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and Smith College, Northampton, Mass., where she received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1922. She is a teacher of English at Danbury High School, Danbury, Conn. 2. Helen A., born Sept. 11, 1903, a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and Smith College, Northampton, Mass., where she received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1924. She is now secre- tary to the principal of Lincoln School, which is identified with Columbia University, New York City. 3. Donald C., born July 16, 1905, a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy and Colgate University, class of 1927, and degree of Doctor of Medicine at Syracuse University in 1931. He is now an interne in Atlantic City Hospital. He married Miss Ruth Taddiken, of Ogdensburg.
Mr. Tulloch has always been a Republican and is a member of the Republican state committee and St. Lawrence County Republican com- mittee. He is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge, and belongs to the Cen- tury Club, Ogdensburg Country Club, and Ogdensburg Sportsmen's Asso- ciation. He has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce since 1901

and served as its president for six years. He and his family are active members of the Presbyterian Church, of which he has been a trustee since 1906.
J. William Rutherford, who is assistant collector of United States cus- toms at Ogdensburg, is recognized as one of the substantial citizens of St. Lawrence County, and he is a member of an old and honored family of the North Country. He was born in the Town of Waddington, St. Law- rence County, Dec. 4, 1866, the son of George F. and Christina (Elliott) Rutherford.
George F. Rutherford was born in Waddington, N. Y., and for many years ranked among the representative farmers of that section. He re- sided on the old Rutherford homestead, where his parents had settled after their arrival from Scotland. Mr. Rutherford was a Republican and took a prominent part in local politics. He held membership in the Scotch Presbyterian Church, as did his wife. Both are deceased and are buried in Waddington. To Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford were born the following children: 1. Thomas F., deceased. 2. Adam E., deceased. 3. Maurice E., assistant cashier, U. S. Customs, Ogdensburg. 4. J. William, the subject of this sketch. 5. George, died in infancy. George F. Rutherford mar- ried (second) E. Jane Porteous, of Waddington, N. Y., where she now resides. No children were born to this union.
J. William Rutherford attended the Waddington schools and also was a student at Madrid, N. Y. He received the degree of Bachelor of Science at St. Lawrence University in 1890, and during the following year was a teacher in the high school at Bridgehampton, Long Island. He then located at Nicholville, N. Y., as principal of the high school. His next position was as principal of Waddington High School, where he remained for six years. On Aug. 25, 1899, Mr. Rutherford entered the service of the United States Customs office as deputy collector and inspector, and in 1907 he was promoted to the office of special deputy collector. On April 13, 1923, he became assistant collector.
Mr. Rutherford was married on June 27, 1896, to Miss Ella H. Hob- kirk, of Waddington, the daughter of Adam A. and Margaret (Ruther- ford) Hobkirk. Both are deceased. To Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford have been born five children: 1. Bessie M., a graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, now in the employ of the Ogdensburg Trust Company. 2. Irma E., married George W. Sisson, III, of Potsdam, and they have two chil- dren: Andrew R., born in August, 1928; and Ellen Wing, born Dec. 11, 1930. 3. Donald W., who is manager of the Endicott-Johnson store at Ogdensburg.
