HISTORICAL NOTES


1817


The Presbytery of Grand River formed a Society for the education of young men for the ministry. Assistance was given to worthy students who were studying privately with ministers.


1820


The Erie Literary Society's School was opened in Burton.


1824


A board of commissioners was chosen to establish a literary and theo- logical institution.


1825


Hudson was chosen for the site of the new college. A board of trustees, consisting of seven clergymen and seven laymen, was organized.


1826


On February 7 a charter was granted to the college by the state of Ohio. The first students, three in number, received instruction in December under a temporary tutor at Talmage.


1827


The first building called "Middle College," was completed in August ; Western Reserve College formally opened in the autumn.


1830


A department of Theology was established.


1843


A department of Medicine was established in Cleveland.


1852


The department of Theology was discontinued.


1880


It was decided to move the college to Cleveland, changing the name Western Reserve College to that of Adelbert College of Western Reserve University.


1882


In September, Adelbert College was formally opened.


1884


The department of Medicine was organized as a separate department of Western Reserve University.


1888


The College for Women was established as a separate department of Western Reserve University.
