NEAR WOODLAND AVENUE,
CLEVELAND, OHIO.
All Hames offered by this Company are made from Second Growth Timber and the best American Iron. The Workmanship is first-class. The construction is SUPERIOR to that of all other Hames. A pin is made solid on a loop and fits into the holes in the back of the Hame, so that when the strap is put through the loop, the pin holds the loop firmly in its place. But when the strap is unloosed, the pin may be withdrawn, and the Hame easily adjusted to any length of collar. A much Neater Connection is thus made than when the Strap passes around the Hame as in the old style. The Strap lies flat upon the top of the Collar, instead of standing EDGEWISE or twisting down.

INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting this, our Fifth Annual City Directory of Cleveland, we take the opportunity of expressing our gratification at the success that has thus far attended our efforts to give the public a trustworthy and comprehensive guide to the city, embracing everything necessary to render such a work complete. Taught by the experience of five years in the intricate work of compiling city directories, and aided by experienced and careful assistants in the labor of can- vassing and compiling, we have been so far enabled to avoid defects and errors. We present our directory for 1875-76 with a feeling of confidence that it will meet the needs and elicit the favorable commendations of our patrons.
We make no claim that our work is perfect or that it is free from errors, but simply that it as near perfection as the careful and earnest work of com- petent men can make it. The canvass for a city directory is beset by numerous unavoidable difficulties. Many persons whose judgment should teach them the folly of such a course, give information reluctantly and inaccurately, others refuse information entirely, and we are forced to seek it from outside sources ; others again esteem it humorous to impose on canvassers by giving fictitious names and in other ways interfering with the correctness of so important a work. The gleaning out of these defects is a laborious task that can hardly be accomplished perfectly, and this is one of many difficulties that interfere with the absolute perfection of a city directory. That we have accomplished this in an eminent degree we believe, and hence our confidence that our work will meet a favorable reception.
Thanking our patrons for their liberal encouragement and trusting that our present issue will, in their estimation, justify all that we hope for,
We are, respectfully,
