PRINTED AND BOUND AT THE ECONOMY PRINTING HOUSE -OF- JAMES B. SAVAGE, 65 & 67 FRANKFORT ST.

PREFATORY.

In issuing this, the eighth Annual Directory of the "Forest City," the publishers may be pardoned a show of vanity for having accomplished so important a work in the extraordinarily short space of eleven weeks.

The canvassing, compiling and printing of a Directory for a city of the magnitude and importance of Cleveland is a most difficult and complicated undertaking at best; much more so than is generally understood by those who are not initiated into all the details by which the work is surrounded; hence the vexations attendant in procuring the information from our mixed and largely foreign population, and the tedious task of compiling the same to make the book valuable, is sometimes too little considered by those for whom it is especially intended. In the present issue, the publishers have taken extraordinary pains in canvassing, etc .- in many instauces sending back as often as thirce and four times for a single individual-and if omissions occur at all, the publishers cau scarcely be blamed, as many refuse giving information, or give it wrongly, for reasons obvious- importunate creditors, unpaid wash-bills, etc.

We hope, however, that, after bestowing so much care and capital upon the work, it will bear the test of critical examination, and be found in every respect worthy, and even superior to any prior publication.

The names have been carefully counted; on the following page will be found a tabular state- ment showing the rate of increase of population, which, though slight, is a matter of gratulation.

Especial attention is called to the new and accurate STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, prepared for and original with this issue-see page 33 of Miscellaneous Directory, back part of book. For accu- racy, simplicity of arrangement and ready reference, this list cannot be surpassed.

Commencing with this issue, the Directory will be published by the Cleveland Directory Co., under the same management as heretofore. At their office-Nos. 65 aud 67 Frankfort Street-may be found the latest Directory publications of the principal cities of the United States and Canadas- kept for the accommodation of the public, who are cordially invited to examine them.

In conclusion, we desire to express to our patrons our acknowledgments for the support accorded us, which we accept as gratifying evidence of the acceptability of our previous efforts to make a trustworthy Directory.

Respectfully,

CLEVELAND DIRECTORY CO.,

Publisherx.
