PUBLISHERS' ANNOUNCEMENT.

That the TOLEDO BLUE BOOK has become of indis- pensable value in both a business and social way, is indisputably manifested by its rapidly increasing cir- culation. Business men have not been slow in discov- ering the advantage of placing (at a triflng expense to themselves) advertisements where they will be read for a year or more by the most prosperous class of our city. To those sending out invitations, announce- ments, or circulars of any description, the book has become almost an absolute necessity. A mere check mark changes it into a complete calling list; a short horizontal line placed before a person's name in the street list designating a call received from that per- son, and a line crossing it designating the call re- turned, or vice versa, thereby having at all times a correct list arranged in regular calling order.

The residence phone numbers found before the names in the alphabetical list is a new departure and we hope will prove a great convenience.

To publish a DESIRABLE EDITION, we fully realize that we MUST keep the standard of our book as high as possible in all its appointments.

E. P. HUBBELL & Co., Publishers.

INTRODUCTORY NOTE.

In placing this fifth edition of THE SOCIAL DIREC- TORY in the hands of Society, it seems but meet and proper to say that unusual care has been taken to avoid all errors of names and addresses, a task made more difficult this year than ever before, because of the rapid growth of this fair city. Should mistakes be discovered, it is to be hoped that the indulgent reader will accept our assurance of their unavoida- bility. Too often the people most interested have neglected to give the very assistance so essential to absolute accuracy.

It should also be distinctly understood that this DIRECTORY, valuable as it is to Society, does not at- tempt to draw social lines in any way. It aims to give in accurate and convenient form, names and ad- dresses that may be found useful in issuing invita- tions and cards, and in preparing visiting lists ; in short, a general helper in the important preliminaries of all social functions. That this mission has been well performed in the past is evidenced by the in- creased demand for each successive edition. If the present volume be equally successful, the time and labor spent in its preparation will not have been in vain.

EDWARD PARMELE HUBBELL AND CO. Toledo, September, Eighteen hundred ninety-five.
