HISTORICAL SKETCH.

The Presbyterian Church of Ashtabula was organized on the 7th of December, 1821, "by the Revs. Joseph Badger and "Giles H. Cowles, under the Plan of Union between Presbyteri- ans and Congregationalists in the New Settlements," formed in 1801, which was extensively adopted by the Churches in West- ern New York and Northern Ohio.

The original membership consisted of but seven persons, viz : Joshua Nettleton, Lot Newell, Sally McDonald, Anna Carter, Lydia Hall, Tabitha Smith, and Jerusha Cook. All of these had been members of other Churches. On the first day of their Church Organization, they adopted a confession of Faith and Covenant; which was substantially the same as had been adopted by the other Churches in the Presbytery.

The number of communicants in February 1826, was 27; and in February 1831, the number reported to Presbytery was thirty-eight.

On the 27th of December, 1832, a committee, consisting of Messrs. Clark, Ingersoll and Newell, was chosen to attend to the interests of the church. This was the first standing com- mittee appointed by the church, as shown by the records.

For about five years previous to 1834, this church worship- ped with the Baptist Church, in their edifice, neither society, alone, being able to sustain religious services. After that time, the services were held separately ; and in the following June, twenty-one persons were added to the church, which much in- creased its strength and efficiency. On the 26th of December, of that year, William Hubbard and Moses Ingersoll were elect- ed Deacons ; the first mentioned in the records.

Immediately after the dedication of the church edifice, which took place June 23d, 1836, a protracted meeting was held, and 66 persons were added to the church. An extensive revival of religion was enjoyed in the early part of 1851 ; and, during that year, the names of 57 new communicants are re- corded. In 1858, 38 were added to the church ; and 43 in 1868. These were the chief periods of marked religious interest ; but in several other years the additions were large. In 1860, 51 communicants were dismissed, to form the First Congregation- al Church.

4

On March 5th, 1847, the church adopted, as a permanent Rule, the appointment of a Standing Committee of five, to be elected on the first Friday of January in each year. On the 28th of May following, they unanimously adopted the Confes- sion of Faith and Covenant of the Grand River Presbytery.

The Church, though in name Presbyterian, and connected from its organization, with the Grand River Presbytery, was Con- gregational in its internal government until Nov. 22d, 1850 ; when after mature deliberation, and with a good degree of unanimity, it adopted the Order and Discipline of the Presbyterian Church, with the exception that the right of appeal was allowed, under certain restrictions from the Session to the Church.

J. F. McDonald, J. P. Robertson, O. H. Fitch, Wm. Hub- bard, James Hall, and M. D. Culley were chosen and, in due time, ordained as the first Elders. At the Annual Meeting in the present year, (1869), the organization was, by a unanimous vote made strictly Presbyterian, and the Standing Rules, print- ed in this Manual, were adopted, and the Formula of Admis- sion to the Church, which had previously been adopted by the Session, was approved.

The following list comprises the names of all the Ministers who have occupied the pulpit, whether as stated supplies or Pastors, during a year or longer, excepting one or two employ- ed jointly by the Baptist and Presbyterian Churches between the years 1829 and 1834. Some of the dates are, probably, not precisely correct, as in many cases they are not indicated by the church records, but were obtained from other sources.

5

From its organization until 1834, the church had maintain- ed but a feeble existence. Few in numbers, without a house for public worship, or the means to procure one ; it had been unable to sustain the regular preaching of the Gospel without assistance from abroad. In the spring of 1834, there having been a large accession to the church and society, the late Ne- hemiah Hubbard, of Middletown, Conn., offered a thousand dollars towards the erection of a House of Worship, and prom- ised to furnish a bell for it when completed. Thus encourag- ed, the society resolved to build a church edifice, and made strenuous exertions to raise the necessary funds. A suitable lot was obtained ; and the present building was commenced in 1835, and completed and dedicated on the 23d of June 1836 .- It was, however incumbered with a debt which bore heavily upon the energies of the church and society for several years. In 1858 the building was repaired, enlarged and improved.

Previous to erecting the edifice, a civil organization being necessary in order to vest a legal title in the society, and better enable it to manage its secular affairs, the following act of in- corporation was obtained from the Legislature, which has ever since been the fundamental law of the society.

FORMULA

For the Public Reception of Candidates into Full Communion,

The Minister shall say :

Dearly Beloved in the Lord, it is our privilege, in assem- bling as the people of Christ for the purpose of remembering and showing forth His Death by partaking of His Holy Sacra- ment, to welcome to the Table of the Lord such as sincerely desire to confess Christ, and to take part with us in the privi- leges and responsibilities of His Church.

The following persons, having presented themselves before the Session, desiring Baptism and Admission to Church Fellow- ship, have been duly examined, in accordance with the Direct- ory for Worship, as to their knowledge of God's Word and of the Standards of our Church, and as to their desire and pur- pose, in humble dependence upon the Holy Spirit through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, to lead hereafter a new life as child- ren of God and Members of His Church. Their examination being satisfactory, the Session have resolved to receive them into the Church by Baptism, upon the public profession of their faith.

The names shall here be announced, and the candidates having taken their place before the congregation, the Minister, addressing them, shall say:

Dearly Beloved, you stand here before God, angels, and men, to make a public profession of your faith in Christ, and to be baptized in the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, as a sign and seal of your ingrafting into Christ, and partaking of the benefits of the covenant of grace, and of your engage- ment to be the Lord's. You will now attend to the Creed of the Church.

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth ; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord ; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried ; the third day he rose again from the dead ; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right Hand of God the Father Al- mighty ; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church ;; the Communion of Saints ; the Forgiveness of Sins; the Resur- rection of the Body ; and the Life Everlasting.

Do you thus believe and profess.

The candidates shall answer, We do ; and the Sacrament of Baptism shall then be administered.

10

Those Candidates continuing in their place, the Minister shall say :

The following persons having been baptized in infancy, and desiring to fulfill the duties of members of the Church, and to come to the Table of the Lord, and having presented themselves for this purpose before the Session, have been examined as to their knowledge and piety ; and the examination being satisfac- tory, the Session have resolved to receive them into the Full Communion of the Church.

The names shall here be announced, and they having taken their place before the Congregation, the Minister, addressing them, shall say :

Dearly Beloved, The visible, Catholic Church of Christ consists of all those throughout the world who profess the true religion, together with their children. The covenant of God is with his saints, and with their seed after them ; and it is the privilege and duty of believing parents to have the seal of the covenant placed upon their offspring. On the ground of this covenant, you, in your infancy, were sealed as children of God and members of His Church, by the Sacrament of Baptism. Through His faithfulness who keepeth covenant with His peo- ple, you are now permitted and enabled to acknowledge the God of your parents as your God, to take upon yourselves the engagements made in your Baptism, and to be admitted to the Sealing Ordinances of the Church.

The Minister shall then say :

The following persons, now or formerly communicants in another branch or denomination of the Church having present- ed to the Session letters of dismission, (or, failing to obtain such letters, having furnished satisfactory evidence of their church- relation,) have been duly examined ; and, their examination being satisfactory, the Session have resolved to receive them in- to our Communion.

The names shall here be announced, and they having taken their place with the other Candidates, the Minister addressing all the Candidates, shall say :

Beloved in Christ, It is expected and required of the Mem- bers of our Church, that they diligently study tlse Holy Scrip- tures ; that they acquaint themselves with the doctrines and principles of our Church as they are set forth in the Apostles' Creed and in the Catechisms of the Westminster Assembly ; that they instruct their households in the Word of God, and in the doctrines and duties of our holy religion; that they observe faithfully secret and family prayers ; that they attend so far as possible, all the services of the Church ; that they contribute of their means, in their full and just proportion, for the sup- port of the Institutions of the Gospel ; that they endeavor to.

11

live in piety and godliness, renouncing all sin, and striving af- ter all holiness ; that they seek the honor of Christ, and the build- ing up of His Church, especially of this branch of the Church with which they are directly connected ; that they do not, in any way, oppose or hinder its doctrines or discipline ; and that they submit themselves, in the fear of God, to the care, admo- nition and government of those who are placed over them in the Lord.

Do you, thus, in reliance on Divine help, engage and prom- ise ?

The Candidates shall answer, We do ; and the Minister shall then say:

That you may set your seal to this engagement, and be re- ceived into the Full Communion of the Church, you will now enter into solemn covenant with Christ and his people.

Dearly Beloved in the Lord, In the presence of God, angels and men, you do now avouch the Lord Jehovah, Father, Son and Holy Ghost, to be your God. You receive the Scrip- tures of the Old and New Testament as the Word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and practice. Acknowledging your- selves to be, by nature, dead in sin and children of wrath, you confess the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and the Holy Ghost as your Sanctifier. Thankful for the privilege of Chris- tian fellowship, you engage to receive and esteem the members of this church as your brethren and sisters in the Lord, and to walk with them in Christian love and faithfulness, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bonds of peace. Remem- bering that you are not your own, but that you are bought with a price, even with the precious blood of Christ, you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, and you commit your souls to Him, in well-doing, as unto a Faith- ful Creator. Deploring your unworthiness, you consecrate yourselves, your time, your means, and your influence, to the honor and service of Christ ; and you covenant to endeavor faithfully to seek as the chief end of your life, to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

Do you thus engage and covenant ?

The Candidates shall answer, Wedo; and the Minister shall then say :

I do now, in behalf of the Session of this Church, and by the Authority of Christ as His Minister, declare you duly ad- mitted to the Full Communion and Sealing Ordinances of Christ's Church, subject to all its obligations, and entitled to all its privi- leges ; and may the God of all grace enable you to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith you are called.

The Candidates remaining in their place, the names and former Church-relation of those to be received by letter from Churches of our own order shall be announced ; and they having risen in the ;Congregation, the Minister shall say :

12

These persons, already communicants in regular standing in our own branch of the Church, having presented to the Ses- sion certificates of such standing and of their dismission to this particular Church, are herewith, by direction of Session, receiv- ed, and declared members of this Church, subject to its disci- pline, and entitled to its privileges.

The Communicants of the Church shall then rise, and the Minister, in heir behalf, shall say to the persons received :

Beloved in the Lord, We, the Communicants of this Church, greet you as brethren and sisters in Christ Jesus, and cordially welcome you to our communion and fellowship. We engage, with Divine help, to treat you with Christian affection and ten- derness, to watch over and pray for you, and to fulfill toward you all the duties of our covenant relation as fellow-members of the Church of Christ. We welcome you to a participation with us in the labors and blessings, the trials and rewards of the Gospel. And we shall ever pray the Great Shepherd of Israel, that he will enable you to witness before the world a good pro- fession ; and that, as you have confessed Christ before men, he may confess you before His Father in Heaven. And now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy ; to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, do- minion and power, both now and ever, Amen.

All remaining standing, the Services of Admission shall be closed with Prayer.

FORMULA FOR INFANT BAPTISM.

The following covenant shall be entered into by the parents of the child to be baptised, themselves being members of the visible Church.

The Minister shall say :

You do now present this child before God in the congrega- tion of His people, that it may be publicly recognized as a mem- ber of the Church of Christ, and may be set apart from a world- ly life to the service of God, by receiving the seal of the cove- nant of grace in the Sacrament of Baptism.

You acknowledge your child to be, by nature, destitute of holiness, and to need, in order to salvation, the atonement of Christ, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost.

You believe in God's faithfulness to His Word ; and you trust, for his blessing on your child, in his covenant with his people for their seed after them.

You promise to instruct this child in the Word of God, and in the principles of our holy religion as contained in the Scrip- tures, and as set forth briefly in the Apostles' Creed and the Catechisms of our Church ; to pray with and for it ; to set be- fore it an example of piety and godliness ; and to endeavor, by all the means of God's appointment, to bring it up in the nur- ture and admonition of the Lord.

You will inform your child of this sacred ordinance ad- ministered to-day, and of its solemn setting-apart to God's ser- vice. You will teach it that it is, therefore, not a child of the world, but a child of God in his Church, under covenanted ob- ligation to lead a Christian life. And as it comes to years of discretion, you will instruct it especially in the duty of sincere faith in the Lord Jesus ; of a hearty personal consecration to his service ; and of a public recognition of its relation to Christ and his Church, by coming to the Table of the Lord, and faith- fully performing every Christian duty.

Do you thus, in reliance on Divine help, engage and cov- enant. Answer, We do.

Parents may present their children for Baptism on any Lord's Day that may be convenient ; but they are requested to do so when practicable, on the "Sabbath following that of the Administration of the Lord's Supper.
