A BRIEF SKETCH OF ITS SITUATION MANUFACTURES, MARKETS, NATURAL RESOURCES, TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES, EDUCATIONAL ADVANTAGES &c., &c.
·ZANESVILLE is situated at the junction of the Muskingum and Licking Rivers and includes practically in its one community the towns of Put- nam, West Zanesville and South Zanesville adjoining, with a population of over twenty thousand people, and is the natural center of South East - ern Ohio, which contains a population of a million and a half.
Its peculiar climate and the variety of surface of the large scope of country of which it is the natural center, secure for it a remarkable ex- emption both from drouth and violent storms. Seasons of serious drouth are seldom known to this region, and when occurring, are of compara- tively short duration.
'Zanesville has now direct communication with all points East and Westby two good Railroad lines, the Central Ohio Division of the Bal- timore & Ohio Railroad and the Cincinnati & Zanesville Railroad. In addition to these a Railroad from Zanesville direct -to Cleveland. via Dresden is in progress and will be completed without delay. One hun- dred thousand dollars has been raised by Zanesville towards its comple- tion.
The Muskingum Slack Water Improvement, renders the river navi- gable as far up as Dresden, (sixteen miles above) thus giving trade an out- let north, via the Ohio canal and via the Pennsylvania Central Railroad and its connections, and South by way of the Ohio river.
The lines of transportation complete and in progress, demonstrate Zanesville to be the focus of what may be ternied the mineral region of Ohio, which embraces about thirty counties, bounded by the Ohio river on the South and South-east and on the West and North by the countics of Adams, Highland, Fayette, Pickaway, Fairfield, Licking, Knox, Holmes, Tuscarawas and Carroll.
This region has more than one-third of the population of the State and has a greater variety of the class of minerals, suited to the practical uses of life than any other in the country. It abounds in Bituminous and Cannel Coal. Iron. Salt, Lime Stone, Sand Stone. Fire Stouc, Fire Clay Brick Clay, Crueible Clay, and Moulding and Building Sand
This coal region is known as the "Lower Coal Measure," and Zanesville is near its Western boundary, thus having the advantage of being nearest to the markets of the great extent of country West, which are supplied with fuel from the mines along the thoroughfares with which our city is connected.
Prof. Mather, former State Geologist, speaking of the Muskingum coal fields says : Along a section from the base of the series at Brownsville, (fourteen miles West of Zanesville, ) to Marietta, at the mouth of the Muskingum, in a thickness of S50 feet, there are eight workable scams of

coal * "The number of workable beds of coal in the coal fields of Ohio, are found to be greater, than in Pennsylvania or Vir- ginia and in the same vertical thickness, much greater than in the coal fields of England." The same authority estimates the coal in Muskin- gum county at 359,712,000 square yards. Here, then, is fossil fuel cm- braced in one county sufficient to supply the people for ages. Should the consumption of coal become proportionably as great as in England, there is sufficient in this county alone to supply the population of our State with fuel for two hundred and fifty years.'
Iron men will also note that he places the quantity of Iron Ore, prin- cipally in Muskingum County and the East part of Licking, at 153,600,000 Square Yards, each yard capable of producing one tun of Pig Metal.
This extensive mineral region is not mountainous, or much broken, as might be supposed by comparison with mineral regions generally. On the contrary almost the whole of its surface is practicable for Agriculture, to an extraordinary degree, being of the most fertile character, abounding in Springs and Streams of the purest water, [the natural drainage of the country is perfect,] and, where uncultivated, luxuriantly timbered with all the woods peculiar to such a elimate, produeing in great abundance those specially adapted for the manufacturing of Agricultural Implements and Machinery. Its variety of surface is greater than any scope of country of the same extent in the Northern States, which of course, gives casy and cheap adaptability to variety and rotation of crops. This Advantage of Variety makes small farming productive and profitable and fits it for a e'o se population.
For Grapes most parts of the country excel, and the whole region is richly productive of the ordinary cereals and fruits of the elimate.
No Country in the world, is better adapted for Wool Growing and as a Grazing country it is not easily surpassed. It is only remarkable that the Farmers have not made it a Dairy country and the fertility of the soil, is perhaps the only reason.
To recur to Zanesville, and speak of its Social, Moral and Educational position and Advantages it would not be immodest or vain glorious to say she ranks equally, with those of any of the communities of the Western Country.
Its School Statistics, which it would be tedious to present in detail in a work of this kind, exhibit the usual attention to Educational culture. In addition to the common School fund provided by Law, an increasing fund of a quarter of a Million of Dollars is invested for the purpose of Educa- eating the poor children of the City, through the beneficence of John MeIntire, the founder of the place.
The Putnam Female Seminary, a richly endowed Institution, with a large and elegant building and extensive and beautiful grounds, is numer- ously attended and under most able and successful management.
St. Columba's Female Academy, conducted under the auspices of St. Thomas Catholic Church, is an excellent School.
Small's Business College with its talented and able Corps of professors. stands second to no institution in the Country.
The German Schools are conducted by the various. German Churches in the City. Suffice to say the Schools are numerous and well attended.
. The towns have twenty Churches besides several Denominations wor- shiping in Public Halls.

At present there are two Woolen Mills, two Paper Mills, one Cotton Mill, four Founderies manufacturing Hollow Ware and Agricultural Im- plements and three Founderies largely engaged in the Manufacturing of Portable and Stationary Engines, one Rolling Mill running in connection with it two Blast Furnaces, one Last Factory, one File Factory, two Soap and Candle Factories, 3 Glass Factories, one Window and two Hollow Ware, one Saddle Tree manufactory, three Marble Factories. two Rope and Cordage Manufactories, three Manufactories of Stone Ware and other Pottery, two Box Factories, one Trunk Factory heavily engaged and ex- tensively patronized, six Flouring Mills, four Furniture Factories, tliree manufactories of Cigars and Tobacco, three manufactories of Sash, Doors, Blinds and general Carpenter work, four Tanneries, seven Breweries, five Wagon and Carriage Manufactories, and two Book Binderies. The Zanes- ville Paper Mill makes a specialty in the manufacturing of Telegraph Paper; the Zanesville City Glass Works are heavily engaged in the manu- facture of a patent Telegraph Insulator now extensively used by the Telegraph Lines throughout the United States, Telegraph Porous Cups is another specialty manufactured by B. Howson. The Repair Shops of the Central Ohio Division of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road, are very ex- tensive and employ a great number of hands. The Zanesville Market is said to be the best in the State outside of Cineinnati.
The Mercantile Business of Zanesville is active and prosperous, the Wholesale trade is extensive, commanding a wide patronage and engaging a large Capital.
In conclusion we will say that Zanesville will compare favorably, in a manufacturing point of view, with any places of similar size in the country and surpasses most of them.
