INTRODUCTORY REMARKS.

In presenting to the public our third Norwalk City Directory, we do so believing that it will be found as complete as it is possible to make a work of its kind. Notwithstanding the fact that omissions and errors may be dicovered, we claim for the work an accuracy and neatness seldom exhibited in a City Directory. We have aimed to make our work a fit representative of the public spirit and importance of the City of Norwalk, and an accurate and complete guide to all public places, and to business locations, and residences of the inhabitants of the city.

The Business Directory contains a classified list of all trades, professions and pursuits in the city, alphabetically arranged.

The Miscellaneous Department contains much infor- mation useful to both citizen and stranger.

The book is devoted exclusively to Norwalk, the size and importance of our city demanding an entire volume.

The publishers of this volume, after long weeks of ear- nest endeavor to make a work satisfactory to themselves and acceptable to the public, now send it forth conscien- tiously completed on their part.

Our thanks are due to Dr. J. B. Ford, and to the effi- cient Mail Carriers (past and present) of the city, for valuable assistance in compiling the list of names.

NORWALK, OHIO.

Norwalk is a thriving city of upwards of 8,000 inhabitants, the capital of Huron County, Ohio.

Main street runs northeast and southwest on the crest of a ridge, and is lined on both sides for more than three miles with rows of stately maples, forming an avenue un- surpassed anywhere for rural beauty and grateful shade. The name "Maple City" is derived from these trees, wisely planted by the forethought of the founders of the city.

Norwalk was laid out as a village in 1819. Its growth has been steady and sure; and improvements, manufac- tures and business have kept pace with the growth of population. In 1870 there were 4,500 inhabitants; in 1880, 5,700 ; in 1890, 7,200, and in 1892, 8,000.

Many articles are extensively manufactured and will be found properly classified in the following pages.

Norwalk has two railroads, the Lake Shore & Michi- gan Southern, and the Wheeling & Lake Erie.

Possessing many fine public buildings, a superior school system, active church organizations, a large public library, a fine music hall, stone sidewalks on all streets, stone pavements on the business streets, brick pavements on the principal residence streets, splendid railroad facili- ties by her two roads, substantial business blocks and ele- gant private residences, social privileges of the highest order, cultivated and refined homes, diversified manufac- tures, and an energetic and prosperous business commun- ity, Norwalk is well entitled to the distinction freely ac- corded her, of being one of the most beautiful and pros- perous among the smaller cities of the United States.
