NEWSPAPERS

UBIQUITOUS

NOAH WEBSTER defines ubiquity as "existence everywhere at the same time." While the power is not given to mortals, its closest approach is given to you through the activities of such newspapers as these. The activities of men, the progress of events, the new dis- coveries in science, philosophy, invention, the latest revelations of art and letters, the manifestation of nature, all over the world are brought to you through the far-reaching facilities of the newspaper. In every land, on every sea, in the air and underneath the earth and waters, the newspaper gathers for you the news of the times, the lore of the past.

The wings of the wind, the flash of cinema, the spark of electricity

are all potent powers the newspaper employs to bridge time and space for your education and the most marvelous machinery evolved from the brain and ingenuity of man have been adopted and adapted to your service, News, editorials, advertisements, cartoons and illus- trations all contribute to your fund of knowledge, your better living, your health, ycur gayety and the moulding of your mind and char- acter.

And all for 3 cents per day. Such value and service is not to be purchased elsewhere in the world than is given to the subscriber of these newspapers.

Such value and service gains its own reward. It has been mani- fested in these papers by their rapidly growing circulation.

ADJUSTMENT THE KEYNOTE

"OSTEOPATHY deals with the body as an Intricate machine, which, if kept in proper adjustment, nourished and cared for, will run smoothly into a ripe and useful old age. As long as the human machine is in order, like the locomotive or any other"mechanical contrivance, it will perform the functions for which it was intended. When' every part of the machine is adjusted and in perfect harmony, health will hold dominion over the human organismi . bylaws-as natural and immutable as the law'ofgravitation. Stabilityzu Permanency

Do you realize that a City Directory advertisement is a testimonial to the per- manency, the stability, of the advertiser?

That's the sort of concern all of us want to patronize, because we know when they sell us merchandise they are behind it in every way, today, tomorrow, and for the years to come.

"Fly-by-night," "fire-sale" and other temporary or "get-rich-quick" concerns rarely appear in the City Direc- tory.

And it is a noteworthy fact that the concerns which advertise one year in the city directory are there again next year. 90% of directory advertising is renewed.

Directory advertising, is prof.table. In connection with the class- ified business headings it is doubly effective.

May we explain how and why it will pay you?

INTRODUCTION

The volume herewith presented constitutes the 1921 Edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s East Liverpool City Directory. The work has been compiled with great care and the pub- lishers feel assured that it comprises a full and complete epitome of the civic, social, commercial and Industrial in- terests and activities of the city, and that the work will fully meet the requirements of its patrons and the public generally.

All features of the Directory embraced in former issues have been retained and improved upon where possible. The several departments of the Directory are arranged in the order following:

The Buyers' Guide, printed on tinted paper, is included in pages 5 to 30.

The Miscellaneous Department, pages 33 to 49 in- cludes important data concerning city and county officials, public and private institutions, banks, cemeteries, churches, courts, hospitals and homes, libraries, schools, newspapers, parks, public buildings, halls, post office, rail- roads secret and benevolent societies and other informa- tion relating to every civic and social activity in the terri- tory covered by the Directory.

The Street and Avenue.Guide and Directory of House- holders extends from page 51 to page 111.

The Alphabetical List of Names of citizens, business firms and corporations in East Liverpool, Chester and Newell, is embraced in pages 113 to 444.

The Classified Business Directory is included in pages 445 to 488; this feature of the Directory shows the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional occupations alphabetically arranged under headings appropriate to the class of business pursued.

EAST LIVERPOOL

THE POTTERY CENTER OF AMERICA.

By H. B. Barth, Secretary Chamber of Commerce

EAST LIVERPOOL is located in the heart of the Ohio Valley, which is appropriately called the "Work Shop of the World," and on the Lincoln Highway. It is 44 miles west of Pittsburgh, 47 miles north of Wheeling and 104 miles southwest of Cleveland, on the Central Division of the Pennsylvania Lines West. Settled in 1798. Incorpor- ated as a city in 1889. The Federal Census of 1920 credited the city with a population of 21,839.

Directly across the Ohio River and connected by two all-steel suspension bridges and frequent trolley service, are the towns of Chester and Newell, W. Va. The first named with about 3,000 population and the latter about 2,000.

These adjacent towns, together with Wellsville, Ohio, and Midland, Pa., make East Liverpool the center of a pop- ulation of about 40,000 people, with excellent interurban trolley connections.

Abundant fuel-bituminous coal of the famous "Pitts- burgh" quality, natural gas from the West Virginia fields and electric power in unlimited quantity for manufacturing purposes from the largest generating unit in the world at Beach Bottom, W. Va., are other industrial advantages.

East Liverpool is known as the Pottery Center of America, has thirty-nine potteries making general ware and electrical porcelain, and is conspicuous for its 296 bottle-kilns projecting above the roofs of the buildings.

The entire United States forms the chief market, but large quantities are also shipped to Canada, Cuba, the Hawaiian Islands and South America.

The pottery industry of East Liverpool was founded by James Bennett, an English potter, in 1839, who

1

-

INTRODUCTION

found clay in its hills, built a pottery, and manufactured yellow and Rockingham ware. The manufacture of white ware was introduced about 1879, and this was followed by the use of underglaze decorations.

While potteries constitute the chief industry, in addi- tion there are two rubber plants, a steel mill, large machine works, three flint works and numerous small industries.

There is a modern Y. M. C. A., Carnegie Library, ex- cellent schools, including a first-class High School and a Business College, good churches, two city parks, a thoroughly equipped City Hospital, motorized fire depart- ment and City Water Works, including a modern filtration plant, costing one-half million dollars.

THE EAST LIVERPOOL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

In every commercial and industrial community there is an organization of business men whose foremost ambi- tion is to promote the natural advantages of the city to their highest stage of development and in advancing the civic ideals of the city. Such an organization is the East Liverpool Chamber of Commerce.

ADVERTISING EAST LIVERPOOL

Copies of this Directory are placed by the publishers in the Directory libraries maintained in the larger cities of the country, where they are accessible for reference. The advantage of this widespread publicity is obvious for there is no medium that contributes more to the develop- ment of a community than a clear exploitation of its re- sources and advantages which is one of the important func- tions of a Directory.
