PREFACE.

The Compiler presents " WILLIAMS' TOLEDO DIRECTORY FOR 1860," to his patrons, confidently believing that it will be found by them to contain as perfect and complete information, on all subjects usually included in the limits of such works, as the greatest care and labor can render it. Our aim has been to make the work a reliable Book of Reference, and such that those who once consult its pages, will be constrained to resort to it in their daily business transactions to obtain the facilities it affords.

The compilation of a Directory is not the field for the display of talent, but one, above all others, requiring the exercise of patience and persevering labor ; and, since the announcement of his inten- tion to publish a Directory for the city of Toledo, the compiler has, himself, together with a full corps of competent and experienced as- sistants, perseveringly and energetically labored to produce a work that would compare favorably with the most perfect of the kind in the country. The result of this labor is now laid before the public, and the practical tests to which the work will be daily submitted will demonstrate how far we have succeeded in the attainment of our object : to this ordeal we cheerfully submit it, and confidently an- ticipate the favorable decision of the public.

The work embraces a General Directory, containing a full list of the names and locations of the inhabitants of the city-a complete Business Directory, embracing the name of each person and firm do- ing business in Toledo,-with a City Guide, containing the names of all the Streets, Alleys, Lanes and Avenues with their location and termini : also, the names and locations of all the public institutions, Banks, Churches, Societies, &c., and a complete list of United States Post Offices corrected up to date.

Our General Directory will be found to contain about four thousand names of heads of families, adults, etc., whose locali- ties could be fixed, and upon this basis, experience gained in other cities, would justify us in estimating the present population of the city of Toledo at twenty thousand souls ; which fact not on- ly indicates the rapid growth and importance of the city, but also the necessity for the annual publication of a City Directory.

To the press of the city for their flattering notices during the can- vass, and to the business men and citizens of Toledo, for their sup- port of the work, the compiler returns his sincere thanks, and will long gratefully remember the favors and courtesies received whilst engaged in the enterprise. 1555546 R917.71
