Introductory
The forty-eighth edition of the Toledo City Directory, herewith present- ed, contains the usual information, fresh and new, from a thorough canvass of the city and a compilation of the results.
Directory making, like every other business, is constantly improving and we have not lost sight of that fact but have taken advantage of all use- ful improvements which our own experience or that of others in the same line has suggested. An important innovation in the present volume and one which, we feel confident, will meet with general commendation is the print- ing of the Street and Avenue Guide and Directory of Householders on pink paper, making this a distinct department by itself and distinguishable at a glance. The materials of the covers have also been changed lending at- tractiveness to the appearance of the volume as a whole, besides greatly adding to the strength and durability of the binding.
Although this edition is larger than its predecessors in contents it is not o bulky a work. Published for a steadily growing city it had become apparent that to avoid unwieldiness it was necessary to abridge the mechan- ical part of the directory and condense the information into as small a limit as possible, without impairing its value, and by so doing the work will be more convenient to handle and the binding will be more durable and lasting.
POPULATION.
Exclusive of firm names, deaths, removals and those appearing more · than once this issue of the Directory contains 93,968 names. Using the multiple of 21/2-to allow for names of married women and children not in- cluded in the canvass-the present population of Greater Toledo is estimated at 234,920. This estimate of population discloses but a normal increase over last year, yet it shows the growth of Toledo to be a gradual and substantial one, free from any semblance of instability.
As heretofore the canvass for names was not confined within the city "mits proper but covered the adjacent suburbs, which are to all intents and purposes as much a part of Toledo as though included within the corporate limits.
The records of the past year show an era of prosperity in all depart- ments of business, and there has been a steadily increasing development.

.....
Merchants are prosperous, factories are expanding and running full time, labor and capital are working in unison and signs of progress are visible from all points. A peculiar feature of the recent canvass was the remark- ably small number of vacant dwellings and apartments found in Toledo. There are less now than will be' found in any other city of its size in the Union.
