GREETING.

T wo months after date I present you with the Second Edition of The Cleveland Blue Book. Obstacles which no one could foresee prevented the book from appearing as it was promised, December Ist. but we have the satisfaction that it will be ready for the Spring, if not the Holiday trade.

Only Directory Publishers can estimate the amount of labor expended upon the book, but if the result prove satisfactory. we shall be well repaid:

We would call especial attention to some new features of the book.

Of the suburban towns we endeavored not only to give the correct addresses of the families, but the population and direct route, to each town.

Especial inquiries were made by letter, for the population of each, and after the towns were all printed the tardy replies came from Elyria giving 5,000, and from Canton making the population 23,000.

Our Elegant Banking Department is worthy of especial note ; it is well known that for the stability and soundness of its banks Cleveland is noted, not having but one complete failure during the last thirty years.

We can look with pride upon the large capitals of our Savings Banks, as well as the Private Banks and National.

The Educational Department is an excellent feature of the book, representing the best Colleges and Private Schools in Northern Ohio. Schools equal to the best in any section. With the profuse expenditure of money upon our Schools, and the great

- IV -

number of cultured teachers, there is good reason to believe that The Western Reserve may yet become the Western Center for refinement and culture.

In the publication of these books, there is one feature which is inevitable, and which always gives a feeling of dissatisfaction to the Publisher. That is the inability to obtain all the names which we desire. These omissions cannot be avoided now. but in future editions, all the names can, from time to time be gathered in; ladies will be ready at the call of the Agent to give not only their own families, but those of their friends, whom they may desire to find in the book.

To those Ladies who have thus kindly assisted us in our task with the present volume, we are under many obligations.

Our thanks are also due to those Advertisers who so gener- ously encouraged the work, and kindly overlooked the delay.

We propose that each future Edition shall be more full and complete.

Mrs. M. W. Brown Haven,

PUBLISHER.
