"TO FIND A NAME YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO SPELL IT."

917.7132 C599 1885/86

19 July 19LEE

FIFTEENTH ANNUAL EDITION, 1885-'86.

This volume contains the addresses of seventy thousand, five hundred and four (70, 504) persons, ACTUAL COUNT, the names of firms, incorporated companies, traveling salesmen whose homes are elsewhere, and other extraneous matter, not included. Our Directory for 1880 (the year of last U. S. decennial census) contained the names of fifty-one thousand six hundred and twenty-four (51,624) persons; a gain of eighteen thousand, eight hundred and eighty (18,880) addresses in five years.

1885/86 cont.

The usual mode of arriving at the number of inhabitants of a city by computing from the names contained in a Directory, is to multiply the whole number presented by 312. This has been demonstrated a fair and impartial method of estimating; at least, one that does not exaggerate when applied to western towns and cities with large floating populations. But comparison with the last decennial census and later police statistics of the city shows 314 to be the rate we should employ. Multiply the increase, 18,880 by 314, and the result shows 61,360 gain in population in one-half decade. At this rate our population will be over three hundred thousand (300,000) at the next U. S. decennial enumeration in 1890. Multiply 70,504 the whole number of names in this volume, by 314, and we have a grand total of 229, 138.

In the year ending July, 1885, our population has increased at the rate of six hundred per month. See tabulated statement on following page.
