The Morning Republican "Findlay's Best Newspaper"

T HIS paper prints more news and advertising than all other newspapers in the county combined. It never sacrifices news space for advertising, but increases the number of pages in proportion to the demand.

This policy has made THE MORNING REPUBLICAN the most popular newspaper in the county. Another feature is that its news can always be relied upon, and it rejects all objectionable advertising copy.

THE MORNING REPUBLICAN

Prints all the local and general news. Its office staff and local correspondents cover the city and county completely, while the Associated Press (the biggest and most reliable newsgathering organiz- ation in the U. S.) runs its leased wire right into our office, where our own operator receives the news direct from every point in the world.

MARKET REPORTS

Farmers will find our market reports more complete than any others published in the county. They are corrected daily and the quotations are as accurate as it is possible to have them considering the variations in grade and quality of produce.

CLASSIFIED ADVERTISEMENTS

The Classified Advertising section of THE MORNING REPUBLICAN is evidence of the paper's popularity. Here you have a vertible clearing house for farmers and others who have anything to buy or sell. The cost is small and the results big. If you have anything to buy, sell, exchange, rent or trade you cannot afford not to adver- tise it in the classified columns of THE MORNING REPUBLICAN. Orders by phone received from anywhere in the county.

JOB PRINTING DEPARTMENT

THE MORNING REPUBLICAN Job Rooms are superbly fitted with five fast presses and an endless amount of type for the production of all kinds of printing. No job is too large and none too small for us, and we guarantee everything first-class. We are especially well equipped to print sale bills and stock catalogues on short notice. When you are in need of any kind of printed matter, and that includes everything that is produced on a printing press, see us for samples and estimates. Prices are always consistent with first-class work.

FARMERS' DIRECTORY

1

A Popular Watering Place.

HANCOCK COUNTY SOME FACTS AND FIGURES

H

ANCOCK COUNTY, with a total of 3,304 farms in an area of 535 square miles, is distinctly a farm county. More than 93 per cent. of the entire area of the county is in its farms, and more than 84 per cent. is under cultivation. The farms are, as a rule, of more than average size, less than 3 per cent. being under ten acres. They are almost without exception profitable and correspond- ingly valuable. The farmers, as a class, are the most prosperous folks in the county. In view of the number of farmers, that is in itself a statement of the wealth of this section.

The farm population of Hancock County is almost exclusively native- born white. There are but few foreign, and only six negro farmers in the entire county, according to the most recent United States Government statistics.

It is interesting to note the number of farms in the county operated by their owners. Of this class there are 2,019, or 61 per cent. One thousand four hundred and thirty-four, or 71 per cent. of them, are reported free of mortgage debt. This is an exceptionally large per-

5

HANCOCK COUNTY

centage. Of the balance the remarkably low mortgage indebtedness of only 24 per cent. of the entire valuation is carried. Even in the absence of other statistical figures these mortgage statements alone would indi- cate exceptional prosperity among Hancock County farmers.

The largest single crop, and the one produced most generally throughout the entire county, is corn, of which 2,440,675 bushels were produced in 1910, a notably bad crop year, but the latest for which authoritative figures are available. Following closely on this for quan ity is oats, with a total of 929,304 bushels; wheat comes next, with 518,276 bushels, and potatoes fourth, with 86,644 bushels. The combined total value of these four crops was in excess of three and one-half million dollars.

Everywhere is an atmosphere of hard work. Everyone takes work seriously and as a matter of course. There is no false pride about it, and no failure to realize its importance and its necessity. Rich farmers' wives, and sons and daughters, take pride in their fine butter, their eggs, their vegetables, their chickens and their stock. The relations between the people of the farms and the people of the county seat are most cordial. The farmers deposit their savings in the local banks, and deal in the local stores.

This directory is published in the belief that it will serve to acquaint the residents of one end of the county with those of the other. We believe it to be accurate. We realize, however, that even in the most carefully compiled and printed books certain errors are bound to appear, and we apologize in advance for any such that may be found by our subscribers.

MILLIONS OF DOLLARS' WORTH OF GOOD CORN IS FED TO THE RATS AND MICE EVERY YEAR

Corn that would bring cash at top prices, or make fine market cattle or stockers. This loss falls heavily on every farmer in corn country. If you have stored your corn in an old wooden crib where it is exposed to rain and snow, as well as the little thieves, you know the extent of this waste better than we can picture it to you. Enough corn goes this way to pay for the Dickelman Extra, many, many times.

This is a money saving proposition to you. The Dickelman Crib pro- tects your corn not only from the pests but from the weather and mold. Made in three styles. Write for descriptive circular and prices.
