New trees were planted in front of the church and it was decided as soon as they were large enough the old locust trees would be removed. I thought it interesting the trees cost $20 and were guaranteed to live.
In 1947 a furnace was purchased for the Community Building, now known as Fellowship Hall, and the building was remodeled.
In November of this year the members of the church signed a petition against the creation of an artificial lake just east of the church.
A "Winning the Children For Christ" program was used this year. Unchurched children were invited into homes and told the Gospel story.
In 1948 the belfry was removed from the church and the bell stored away.
A piano was purchased for the church by Cassius Martin, the grand- father of some of our present members.
Some good recommendations were made by the deacons - they were: (1) go over the books once a year to see that all members are accounted for. (2) Each new member be appointed a "sponsor friend" to watch over, protect, instruct and encourage in their new Christian experience. (3) Have a study group for all new members .(4) That people be made conscious of need for new workers in church. (5) To have a Christian Fellowship night semi-annually.
In 1949 Bethel had her first Vacation Bible School. Once before it had been tried having it one day a week for five weeks, and at another time our church went with other churches in the area but this started an annual Bible School that is very much a part of our Christian Education program today.
In 1950 an oil furnace was purchased and installed in the church building at a cost of $1100. The Sunday School paid $500 and the rest was raised by donations. Now we have seen heating go from wood stoves to coal stoves, to coal furnace and now an oil furnace.
In 1951 a discussion was held on joining the church and Community building together but the construction engineer did not give an estimate.
23
A Fund was set up for the training of anyone who wishes to go into Christian service. Many young people have been helped in getting their education for Christian service - several of these people are in the ministry today.
Rev. Long after serving as pastor for twelve years tendered his resignation. He served during World War II and I especially remember he and Mrs. Long doing all their calling on bicycles because of the gas rationing.
The Friendly Helpers Class asked permission to put restrooms in the Community Building but this was never accomplished for soon after plans started to be made on remodeling the church.
In 1952 the church was trying to call a new pastor. It was felt by the church that we needed a parsonage and a discussion was held whether to buy a place in Donnelsville that was for sale or build a home. The home in Donnelsville was purchased for $6850 and the young people of the church were given $500 to redecorate the parsonage.
Rev. Harold Gray was then called as pastor and they moved into this parsonage.
In 1953 water was placed in the Community Building and a stage used during school days was removed.
This year the B. Y. was divided into Senior and Junior groups.
In 1953 a Hammond Organ was purchased by the church and this made the music at all services more impressive. Later chimes were added by the family of Abe Martin in memory of Mrs. Martin.
Bethel lost a very beloved member when Aunt Minnie Schauffner went to meet the Lord she loved so much after 73 years as a member of Bethel. She was 103 years old. Her husband had been a sexton of the church in 1875. Aunt Minnie lived her life as she thought the Lord would want - she always had a wonderful word to say for her Lord.
In 1953 a building committee was appointed to make plans for a building program. The church was growing out of its facilities.
In 1954 a Mission Board was set up composed of three men and three women. This group would plan the Mission program for the church.
In 1955 a new movie projector was presented to the church to be used for visual aid by all. Since then a slide projector, filmstrip machine, tape recorder along with many records and tapes have been added to this visual aid department.
The calendar year was changed from April 30 to December 31. Now all officers start their new plans with the first of the year with the
24
exception of Sunday School teachers in the primary. They change at promotion time in September.
Clinton Gordon, a deacon for many years and active in many phases of our church work, died during this year. I remember him as a quiet dignified man, respected by all who knew him.
In 1956 a Music Board was formed to plan all special music. They appoint the organists, pianoists, and choisters. Our church has a wealth of music talent and they could see that all were allowed to use that talent.
In the beginning of church they appointed a song clerk. He must have known the music well for it was sometime later they bought books.
In 1963 the Deacons had suggested to the Mission that they consider our church paying some support to a Missionary. A year later they chose Willard Scofield as the Missionary we were to support with $3500.
In 1957 plans were represented by the building committee for a new building program. The sanctuary was remodeled and reversed, a baptistry was put in beneath the choir loft, nine classrooms were added, a nursery, restrooms and utility rooms at a cost of $78,000.
A group of young women of the church formed the Ann Judson Circle. This was later extended to four Circles known as the Ann Judson, Lydia Sarah Gordon & Marian Hackett. Today it has been reduced to three, tho Ann Judson, Lydia and Norma Scofield Circles. These ladies do all kinds of Missionary work for both home and foreign missions. They help families that have problems of hardship, they provide food at the time of bereavement and are the most avids readers of the book in our library.
The family plan of having the Mission Magazine in every home was started. The church paying for the subscription for each family. Today the magazine is known as The American Baptist.
In 1959 a School of Missions was held for the first time. It continued for a few years but has been discontinued. In 1969 a Mission Festival was held which served a similar purpose - getting our people acquainted with our Mission work. At the Mission Festival a Faith-Plan was started that increased our Mission interest and giving.
Since the church was in a state of remodeling Sunday School was held in an empty barn nearby owned by Elno Hardacre. This was a unique experience for the young members of the church. Church service was held in the Community Building. All this inconvenience made us really appreciate the new remodeled church when it was completed.
In 1960 the driveways and parking lots were blacktopped making additional parking places usable.
25
In 1961 our pastor Harold Gray and his wife were sent on a trip to the Holy Land. A member had presented the money to the church to be used for the trip. Upon their return they shared their memories and pictures of this trip with the church.
1963 some money had been given to the church in memory of the former deacon, Harry Clark, this money was used to put in an audio system in sanctuary and nursery.
In 1964 a request was made by a church in Burma for a donation so that they might build a new church. The church sent $385 this was more then sufficient to build their church. They honored us by calling their church Bethel in their native language.
The Mad River Association was redistricted and now known as the Western Association.
In 1963 the Deacons had suggested to the Mission Board that they consider our church paying some support to a Missionary. A year later they chose Willard Scofield as the Missionary we were to support with $3500.
Bethel started another building program in 1964. Plans were to connect the Community Building onto the church. They added five classrooms, a modern kitchen, pastor's study, secretary room and a large room to be used for group meeting. The total cost of this construction was $26,000. The name of the Community Building was changed to Fellowship Hall.
In 1965 Bethel ranked first in Ohio in per capita giving toward Missions among American Baptists. We also ranked nineteenth in the state in total giving. Bethel has come a long way since in early history they were very much in opposition to mission giving.
This same year the Bethel Journal was started. This is a monthly paper containing information and plans for the church.
In 1966 the church considered building a parsonage. Two separate lots had been offered to the church. One by Robert Gordon and the other by Elno Hardacre. After careful consideration the l'ot across the road from the church was chosen. Now the pastor would be living where the echoes of the services of the first church would be remembered. The parsonage was built at a cost of $26,000. A faithful member and a descendent of the early Miller family gave the church a $10,000 donation to pay part of this debt.
Rev. Harold Gray retired after faithfully serving our church 14 years. They had endeared themselves to so many that they left many sad hearts. It was like one of the family going away. When they moved from the parsonage it was sold.
In 1967 Rev. Don Crellin was called to serve as pastor and moved into the parsonage with his family.
26
A Constitution Committee was formed to write a Constitution for our church. This was to be a guide for all areas in our church work. When presented to the church it was accepted and is now being used.
The Library was revitalized with new books added until we have a library of nearly 500 books for all ages, and interests.
The church did some remodeling this year. The ceiling was lowered in the sanctuary using accustical tile, the front of the church war paneled and new carpet was put on the aisles and podium.
A part-time secretary was employed to assist the pastor.
In 1968 a Pals Club was organized to interest our young boys and other boys in the community in a Christian group.
In 1969 we lost another deacon, Gerald Griest. He was a very faithful member and leader in the church, and always willing to serve in any capacity. In his memory a beautiful Communion Set has been given to the church.
Within the last few years a new Bulletin Board has been placed at the front of the church. It is made of brick to blend in with the finish of the church and was given in memory of Albert Stone, a former Trustee, by his wife Claudia.
A Golden Age Club has been formed and they meet to have fellowship together, sometimes take interesting trips or listen to a vital speaker.
New drapes were placed in the front of the church with money left to the church by the Ebersole family. Scott Ebersole had been licensed to preach by our church many years ago.
I couldn,t give all the names of the people who had a part in building our church, to what it is today. Their names are written down in the Book of Life and some l'e buried nearby in the little cemetery. We still have faithful mmbers who are still concerned and work very hard in our church service. I am very grateful and I am sure each one of you are too, for the faithful people who had the courage, perseverence, trust and faith in our Lord, above all the concern for the lost in the neighbor- hood and community or we would not have a Bethel today. I read the names of many churches in Springfield and nearby committees that are no longer in existence. It has taken many generous and dedicated people to make Bethel what it is today but I am sure each one would say "I did it to bring the Lord to others."
We are proud of those who have gone out as ministers and missionaries but wish the number could have been greater. That should be a challenge for tomorrow.
27
Bethel has been a witness in this community for 150 years. Times have changed and we can see changes in the thinking of the church, in its properties, its habits, and its members but we still have the same Lord as did the first organizers and He is still as concerned for Bethel as he was 150 years ago. He still wants us to carry his message to others and to serve our community as a Christian witness. The future of Bethel ies in the lives of the members of the church today and future generations
Bethel is known as a friendly church. May our church always welcome others into her fold.
This has been written to show appreciation for all the members of Bethel Church who have faithfully worked for the Master and for His Church.
