PRIZES.


FOR GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP :- The Kingsbury Prize, founded by J. Munro Brown, Esq., of New York City, and named in honor of Rev. Addison Kingsbury, D. D., of Marietta, amounting to sixty dollars a year, is given to the two students of the Senior Class who have maintained the highest general standing during the previous College year. One-third is paid at the beginning of each term.


The Hyde Prize, founded by the Hon. Wm. Hyde, of Ware, Mass., amounting to the same sum, is given in like manner to the two most meritorious members of the Junior Class.


A like sum may be expected to be given to the two members of the Sophomore Class, whose merit during the previous year has been the highest.


JUNIOR RHETORICAL PRIZES :- The sum of forty dollars is divided between three members of the Junior Class for excellence in the Rhetorical Department; one-third of the class being chosen, accord- ing to standing in the department during the year, to compete for prizes, by presenting essays on subjects assigned. The subjects assigned for the essays in 1882, were; James Madison, John Quincy Adams.


PRIZES FOR DECLAMATION :- Small prizes are given to two mem- bers of each of the Sophomore and Freshman classes for excellence in Declamation. The four members of each of these classes whose grade in this department during the year has been the highest, compete for these prizes at a public exhibition near the close of the College year.

THE HOWARD PRIZE FOR AMERICAN HISTORY : - A prize of one hundred dollars, founded by the Hon. J. Q. Howard, of the class of 1856, is open once in two years to the members of the Senior and Junior Classes for excellence in American Political History. The prize will be awarded at the close of the College year 1882-83.


ENTRANCE EXAMINATION PRIZES :- Through the liberality of the Marietta College Club of Cincinnati, two prizes of thirty and twenty dollars, respectively, will be given to the two members of the Freshman Class of 1883-84 who pass the best entrance examination. These prizes are paid at the beginning of the second term of Freshman year.

MARIETTA COLLEGE.


STATEMENT.


The Preparatory Department, known as the Marietta Academy, is under the immediate charge of a Principal and an Associate, while the College Faculty have a general supervision as to the studies pur- sued, methods of discipline, etc. It is intended to furnish instruction of the best character, and the school is confidently recommended to parents who wish to secure for their sons a thorough preparation for College. The course of study occupies three years, but the students will be admitted to such standing as they are prepared for.

Those wishing to prepare for the Philosophical Course in College will pursue the same studies as for the Classical Course, with the ex- ception of the Greek ; in place of which will be substituted in the second and third years those branches mentioned below the others in the foregoing scheme.


Such as do not contemplate a College Course, but desire to spend a period, longer or shorter, in pursuing a good English education, will find here all the advantages of the best academies. Additional classes will be formed from time to time as the circumstances of the school may require.


The sessions begin and end at the same time as in the College. The charge for tuition averages ten dollars a term.
