Captain Richards and Harriet S. Learned were married April II, 1865. She is a daughter of Paschal P. and Virginia S. Learned, her father a native of Connecticut and her mother, of Norfolk, Virginia. To this union eight children were born, of which number five survive, namely: Channing W. who was born in Memphis in 1870; Paschal L., born in Cincinnati in 1872; Brayton G., born in Glendale, Ohio, in 1874; James S., born in Glendale in 1876; and Virginia Davis, born in Glendale in 1887. Channing W., Paschal L. and James S. Richards, sons of our subject, are prominent young attorneys of Cincinnati, constituting with Carl J. Baer the law firm of Richards, Baer & Richards. Captain Richards belonged to the Chamber of Commerce of Cincinnati, and was a member of the Grand Army of the Re- public and of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
LOWE EMERSON.
LOWE EMERSON, who was president of The Emerson & Fisher Com- pany, carriage builders of Cincinnati, from the time of its organization until 1902, is one of the city's prominent business men and one who has for many years been identified with various manufacturing interests. Mr. Emerson

was born August 14, 1854, at Haverhill, Massachusetts, and is a son of Samuel and Nancy (Wilson ) Emerson. His ancestry in this country dates back to 1642 when the American founder of the family settled at Haverhill with a colony of English Dissenters. The family has had many distinguished members, one of these being the great philosopher and man of letters, Ralph Waldo Emerson. The father of our subject was born and died at the old Emerson homestead, which has been occupied by some member of the family for generations. The mother of our subject was born at Pelham, New Hampshire, and the Wilson family also has produced men of valor and men- tal strength, one example being the late Vice-President Henry Wilson.
Lowe Emerson received common school and academic instruction, and later completed a course at Northfield College, which was then known as the New Hampshire Conference Seminary. At the age of 18 years he left col- lege and spent the following year at Charlestown, Massachusetts, occupied in clerking in a wholesale grocery house. He then came to Cincinnati and became a clerk in the rubber store of Bart & Hickox, leaving there to join the great army of homeseekers then invading Kansas. After three years engaged in real estate speculating in that State, during which time he wit- nessed many events in the "Border Ruffian War," he returned to the East and in the spring of 1862 assisted in the organization of the 11th Reg. New Jersey Vol. Inf., at Trenton, New Jersey, laid out Camp Perine and for a time served as post-adjutant, then the following August was commissioned quartermaster, a rank he chose in preference to a colonelcy. In February, 1863, he was made brigade quartermaster and during the campaign of that year acted in the capacity of aid-de-camp to Gen. A. T. A. Torbert. He participated in the battles of Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Brandy Sta- tion, where the brigade went into winter quarters. In the following July this brigade left the Army of the Potomac and went to Washington, D. C., to interfere with the operations of Gen. Jubal A. Early, and at this time Mr. Emerson was a member of the staff of the commanding general, H. G. Wright, as assistant chief quartermaster. In December he returned to the Army of the Potomac with his corps and remained a staff officer until the close of the war. He then returned to Cincinnati and engaged in the lumber trade, which he successfully prosecuted until 1872 when he established the carriage manufacturing house of Emerson & Fisher, his partner being John W. Fisher, a practical carriage-maker. In 1882, 100,000 carriages- were made

in Cincinnati, exceeding the entire product of England, France and Germany during that year, and a large number of these came from the factory of Emerson & Fisher. Mr. Emerson pioneered the way to the extensive manu- facture of carriages by availing himself of all modern methods and machin- ery, while he also possessed the necessary qualifications which enabled him to place his goods upon the market and keep them there until they succeeded in displacing others. The firm was incorporated in 1882 with Mr. Emerson as president, and he served as such until his retirement from active business in 1902, since which time his son, Lowe K. Emerson, has been president.
Although much of his time and energy have been given to this great enterprise, Mr. Emerson has found opportunity to assist in the direction of six other companies which he helped to organize and in which he is finan- cially interested. He is also a director in the Merchants' National Bank, and for years has been president of the board of trustees of the Ohio Military Institute on College Hill (formerly known as Farmers' College and Belmont College), taking great interest in its progress and management. Until the summer of 1883, Mr. Emerson kept closely to business but he then gave himself an enjoyable vacation, making an extended tour of Europe.
On September 19, 1866, Mr. Emerson was joined in marriage with Maria E. Knight, a native of Jamestown, New York, and they are the parents of the following children : Harrison D., a broker in New York City, who married Flora Coan, a daughter of B. F. and Hattie (Carpenter) Coan; Ernest L., who died in infancy ; Guy W., who was killed by lightning at the age of 15 years; Louise, who resides with her parents; and Lowe K.
Lowe K. Emerson, who succeeded his father as president of The Emer- son & Fisher Company, received his educational training in Franklin School, Cincinnati, and at Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He became associated in business with his father in carriage manufacturing, which he learned in all its details, and upon his father's retirement was well qualified to act as his successor. He served in the Spanish-American War, being commissioned as captain of Company M., Tenth Regiment, Ohio Infantry, United States Volunteers, and was later quartermaster of the First Brigade, First Division, Second Army Corps. He was married to Barbara Coan, a daughter of B. F. and Hattie (Carpenter) Coan of Cincinnati, and they have one daughter, Elizabeth, born August 17, 1902.
Lowe Emerson, subject of this biography, maintains a beautiful home

on College Hill. In politics he is a Republican. His successful career has shown the value of business integrity applied to business transactions, and he is everywhere held in the highest esteem.
ERIC E. SATTLER, M. D .*
As a specialist in diseases of the nose, throat, ear and eye, the subject of this sketch has few peers in the State of Ohio. He occupies a beautiful home on Annwood street, Walnut Hills, and in addition to attending to a large and absorbing practice edits and publishes the well known surgical journal, -The Clinical Chronicle. Dr. Sattler belongs by birth to Cincinnati, where he was born November 4, 1859, and is a son of the late Dr. George Sattler, who for a half century stood at the head of the medical profession in this city.
In 1878 Dr. Eric E. Sattler was graduated at Woodward High School in a class noted for its scholarship, and in 1881 he completed his course at the Miami Medical College. After one year in the Cincinnati Hospital as resident physician, he spent two years abroad, during which time he devoted the closest study to the clinical work in the hospitals of London, Paris, Utrecht, Strasburg, Berlin and Vienna, taking advantage of the medical researches and data so prolific in those great medical centers. Upon his return to Cincinnati, the young physician opened an office at No. 104 West Eighth street, in August, 1883, and engaged in general practice for four years, since which time he has made a specialty of the distressing diseases of the eye and ear and throat and nasal organs, for which his careful study has so well fitted him. His methods have met with the most encouraging success and his practice has extended all over Ohio, as well as the adjoining States.
Dr. Sattler was for 12 years the surgeon in charge and the founder of the Nose, Throat and Ear Dispensary, located at No. 1119 Elm street, which was conceded to be one of the finest establishments of its kind in the city, and there 8,000 patients were treated annually. He has just opened a modern equipped private ophthalmic and aural hospital at No. 608 West Eighth street, where out of town and operative cases receive the most painstaking attention. Dr. E. Cundell Juler, cousin of the celebrated London oculist of the same name, is resident surgeon of this new institution.

CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF CINCINNATI
Dr. Sattler fills many very prominent positions on the faculties of various city hospitals, and he is considered an authority on the special dis- eases to which his practice is limited. He is also a litterateur and has trans- lated from other languages a number of valuable works on medicine. His studies on the eye and the result of his scientific researches resulted in such general interest in the profession, that his papers were published in various foreign languages, a just recognition of his studies and conclusions. His own journal is highly valued as his contributions are sure to be of the greatest practical value to the student and the general practitioner and of certain help to the specialist.
In 1886 Dr. Sattler was married to Blanche Wallingford, who is a daughter of J. M. Wallingford, of Maysville, Kentucky.
Dr. Sattler's offices are located at No. 109 West Eighth street (Gar- field place), Cincinnati, where patients find a careful, sympathetic, skilled physician and surgeon, and his friends, a genial, pleasant and hospitable host.
C. S. MUSCROFT, M. D .*
C. S. MUSCROFT, M. D., one of the most prominent physicians and sur- geons of the city of Cincinnati, was born in this city August 17, 1852, and is a son of Dr. C. S. and Harriet ( Palmer) Muscroft.
Dr. C. S. Muscroft, Sr., father of our subject, was born in England in 1820, and the mother was a native of Indiana. The father was but eight years of age when brought to this country by his parents, and was reared and educated in Cincinnati. He studied medicine and was graduated from Miami Medical College in 1843, thereafter practicing his profession in Cin- cinnati until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. He then went with the 9th Reg., Ohio Vol. Inf., as regimental surgeon, serving under General Thomas. Upon his return from the war at its close, he reentered upon his practice and continued with much success until his death.
Dr. C. S. Muscroft was the only one of the children born to his parents who grew to maturity. He was educated in private and public schools in Cincinnati, and then prepared for the profession in which his father had been so successful. He was graduated from Miami Medical College in 1875, and immediately after began practice. He has since continued and is one of the

most successful practitioners in the city, being widely known among its citi- zens. He was appointed quarantine physician and served as such during the prevalence of yellow fever in 1878-79. In 1880 he served Cincinnati as police surgeon, and in 1882 was elected coroner of Hamilton County on the Democratic ticket. He is surgeon for the Chesapeake & Ohio, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis and Cleveland, Lebanon and Northern rail- ways, and for a number of street railways, as well as the City & Suburban Telegraph Association. The Doctor served as a member of the staff of St. Mary's Hospital for 15 years. He maintains a fine suite of offices in the Lancaster Building. He is a member of the Cincinnati Academy of Medi- cine, and of the Ohio State Medical Society.
Dr. Muscroft was married March 12, 1882, to Stella Collins, a daugh- ter of Charles C. and Anna (Wood) Collins, who is of English descent. They have three children : Charles C .; Edward W .; and Florence E. Fra- ternally, the Doctor is a prominent Elk and has filled all the offices in the subordinate lodge and served one term as district deputy.
MICHAEL WERK .*
MICHAEL WERK, now passed to his long rest, was one of the pioneer manufacturers of Cincinnati, and for many years one of the city's best and most useful men. Mr. Werk was born at Marnheim, Germany, on February 2, 1807.
Mr. Werk obtained his early education in his native land and in 1830 came to America, young, ambitious and energetic. After some preliminary busi- ness experience in New York, consuming about one year, Mr. Werk selected Cincinnati as a suitable field for manufacturing enterprises, and began the manufacture here, first of tallow candles, locating on Sixth street, near Race, his establishment being the first of its kind in the city. Later he engaged in the manufacture of silk hats, in which enterprise he met the strenuous opposition of the felt hat manufacturers. He was a man of resource and of progressive ideas, and in 1834 he sent to France for improved machinery to use in the manufacture of candles and his factory turned out the best article for the least money, ever put on the market. His enterprise brought great financial success which was increased when, in 1836, he added to his factory

the manufacture of soap. His enterprise founded the great factory which continues to be one of the leading industries in this line in Cincinnati, "Werk's German Soap" being known all over the world. Mr. Werk pushed into other fields, and from 1835 to 1841 he was extensively engaged in the rectification of spirituous liquors, abandoning this enterprise, however, al- though remunerative, because of a dislike for the business. His vast estate, at the time of death, aggregated millions, but every dollar of it had been accumulated through legitimate methods, widely separated from the ques- tionable customs of many of the business enterprises of the present day.
While Michael Werk was a self made man in every way, he did not possess the faults and eccentricities often found in men of this character. He was a man of taste and refinement and loved Nature and music. He was a performer on a number of musical instruments and it was his delight to gather his family about him for intellectual and musical entertainments in the beautiful Westwood home, which is a monument to his love of beauty and culture. As a lover of children, he was especially interested in kinder- garten work. He was a liberal donator to charities and religious bodies and in the highest degree enjoyed the esteem of his fellow men. He lived to see his family prominent in business and social life, to realize that his efforts to increase his city's value as a commercial center had succeeded and that he could pass from earth leaving behind the record of an honorable and use- ful life.
Mr. Werk married Paulina LaFeuille, whose death antedated his own by several years. Ten children were born to the union, five of whom still survive : Casimir L., the present manager of the vast business established by his father, who married Pauline Herancourt, daughter of George Heran- court, and has the following children,-Michael, George, Emile, Pauline, Casimir, Jr., and Lillian ; Emile; Adele who married William S. P. Oskamp, member of the leading jewelry firm of Oskamp, Nolting & Company, of Cincinnati, and has these children,-William Herbert, Eugene Gordon, Will- iam Werk, Adele Regina and Elsa Pauline; Marie, who is the wife of George W. Jones; and Eugenie M., who resides at the homestead. .
