TOLEDO BLUE BOOK.
MOURNING.
While in deep mourning a maiden wears a cap and cuffs of sheer white crape. The cap and long veil are not worn for less than one year, and the period of mourning for a widow, we are told, should last eighteen months, for six months the dress should be of crape cloth or Henrietta covered entirely with crape. Dull black kid gloves are worn in first mourn- ing. After that silk gloves are proper, particularly in summer. All kinds of black fur and seal-skin are worn in deep mourning.
Mourning for a parent should last one year. During half a year should be worn Henrietta or serge trimmed with crape, at first with black tulle at the wrists and neck. A deep veil is worn at the back of the bonnet, but not over the head or face, like the widow's veil, which covers the entire person when down. Mourning for a brother or sister may be the same; for a stepfather or stepmother, the same; for grand- parents, the same; but the duration may be shorter. Mourn- ing for children should last nine months.
There is a kind of complimentary mourning which does not necessitate seclusion-that which is worn out of respect to a husband's relation, whom one may never have seen. But no one wearing a héavy crape veil should go to a gay reception, a wedding or a theatre.
The period of mourning for an aunt or uncle or cousin is of three months' duration, and that time at least should elapse before the family go out or into gay company or are seen at theatres or operas, etc.
A letter of condolence should be written as soon as pos- sible, and pains should be taken to acknowledge all letters of condolence and flowers received at the death of a relative.
Visiting cards and stationery, bordered with black, are only used while one is wearing crape; that is, in deepest mourning.
MRS. JOHN SHERWOOD.

ETIQUETTE NOTES.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Vegetables "a la Julienne " are vegetables that have been cut into slices either long or short, thick or thin.
Guests should be served first if they are ladies ; if not, the ladies of the house should first be helped, then the visiting gentlemen.
The sending of flowers to outbound passengers has become a foolish fashion, and the display is vulgar. Flowers in the close atmosphere of a ship are anything but grateful ; send frnit or sweets, or books and magazines.
LADIES HOME JOURNAL.
A note in answer to a invitation should be written in the third person, if the invitation be in the third person for instance.
.
Mr. and Mrs. Cadogan have great pleasure in accepting the polite invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland for dinner on the seventeenth inst, at seven o'clock, Eighteen Lombard Square, July Sixth.
No letter or note should be written on ruled paper. A margin around the edge of the paper is no longer ruleable, people now write all over the paper.
MRS. JOHN SHERWOOD.
A bib pin with the birthday stone for the month in which a child was born is an appropriate gift for a birth day for an infant, and also two pins to catch up the sleeves on the shoulder.
284
TOLEDO BLUE BOOK.
The birthday stones for the months are: January, garnet ; February, amathyst ; March, blood stone; April, diamond; May, emereld; June, pearl; July, ruby ; August, moonstone; Sep- tember, sapphire; October, opal ; November, topaz; December, turquoise.
When two ladies are introduced it is not necessary for either to rise; neither is it necessary for a lady to rise when a gentleman is presented to her.
Thê banishment of the sugar bowl from the tables of the ultra-fashionabie, is an accomplished fact. The sugar basket usurps the time honored bowl.
LADIES' HOME JOURNAL.
The minuet and Vienna quadrille have been revived .- Mrs. John Sherwood.
The laws of etiquette do not permit us to use numerals, as 3, 4, 5, but demand that we write out three, four, five. The date should follow the signing of the name .- Mrs. John Sherwood.
In this country, where we have no titles, it is the custom to abbreviate everything except the title of "Reverend," which we always give to the clergy. A Bishop should be addressed "To the Right Reverend John Smith, Bishop of Ohio." In addressing a Bishop one would begin "Right Reverend and Dear Sir." To a Doctor, "Doctor James Reiley," to a lawyer, unless he occupies a position on the bench, should be addressed simply to James Robinson Esq.,. All returned ambassadors, members of Congress, and members of the Legislature should be given the title of "Honorable." You must not divide what you have to write into paragraphs, but write it con- tinuously, you must not write on each side of your sheet, one after the other, just as they come. Use the front page first, then turn it over and fill up the back, then the other side of the front page, writing crosswise from top to bottom and so on down, filling both the inside pages. Date your letter at the lower left hand corner at the end of the letter. The year and day of the month should be expressed in words.
