CLASSIFICATION OF MAIL MATTER, RATES ON


POSTAGE, GENERAL INFORMATION AND SUGGESTIONS.


FIRST CLASS MATTER-Postage 2e


for each ounce or fraction thereof embraces all matter wholly or partly written or which is so done up as to prevent examination without de- stroying the wrapper and must be prepaid at least one rate 2c


SECOND CLASS MATTER-Pertains to publishers and newsdealers but may be mailed by other than publishers at the rate of lc for each 4 ounces or fraction thereof and must be fully prepaid by stamps affixed


THIRD CLASS MATTER-Postage 1c for each 2 ounces or fraction thereof embraces books (printed) and all printed matter in unsealed wrappers and the limit in weight is 4 lbs except in the case of a single book which weight is unlimited and must be fully pre- paid Photographs are now third class


FOURTH CLASS MATTER-Postage 1c for each ounee or fraction thereof embraces all mail- able matter not specified above and must be so done up as to admit of examination and fully prepaid Labels patterns playing cards visiting cards address tags wrapping paper blotting pads bill heads letter heads envelopes with printed addresses thereon and all other matter of the same general character Mer- chandise and samples are fourth class


Second Third and Fourth class mail matter must be prepaid the original rate of postage before being forwarded or returned


UNMAILABLE MATTER-Liquors (exeept when packed as provided by regulation) poisons explosive or inflammable artieles or any article which is liable to injure the mails or persons handling the same Sharp-pointed instruments except properly done up are un- mailable as is also any mater not ad- dressed to a Post Office


POSTAL CARDS-Are unmailable when anything is pasted or attached thereto or when any- thing not necessary to complete the address is written or printed on the address side


CONFECTIONERIES-Arc unmailable except done up in a tin box which box must again be placed in a pasteboard box


FRUITS-Except dried are unmailable. Any mat- ter exhaling bad odors is unmailable


SUGGESTIONS-Deposit your mail in the post- office as early as possible always keeping let- ters and circulars separate and when in quantities hand them in through the window Money should never be sent in ordinary let- ters Procure a money order or have it reg- istered


CITY OR DROP LETTERS-Should be kept sepa- rate from outgoing letters and deposited in the receptacle labeled "City Letters"


CITY POSTAGE-On sealed letters 2c for each ounce or fraction thereof


FOREIGN POSTAGE-The rates to all foreign countries except Canada and Mexico are as


follows Letters per half ounce 5c Single postal cards each 2c double postal cards each 4e Newspapers and other printed mat- ter 1c for each 2 ounces


CANADA AND MEXICO POSTAGE-The rates of postage are the same as in the United States except that sealed pakages other than letters in their ordinary shape or form are absolutely excluded Merchandise to Mexico must be sent under Parcel Post Sys- tem for particulars of which inquire at Post Office.
