Upon positive information of a fire negr your signal box, unlock the door, and turn the crank slowly and
steadily about twenty-five times. In boxes where there are no cranks, pull the hook down once, slow. then let it go and shut the box door.
Never open the box or touch the crank except in case of fire.
Never give an alarm except from the box nearest the fire.
Be sure the box is locked before leaving it.
Never let the key go out of your possession. unless to some responsible person for the purpose of giving an alarm. or when called for by the Superintendent.
The number of the box signaling the fire will be struck upon the bells of all the Engine Houses. For example : To announce an alarm from signal hox No. 24, the bells will be struck TWICE, and after a pause of five seconds, will be struck FOUR times, thus, 2-4. If from 124. thus, 1-2-4. The number of the box will he repcated at intervals of fifteen seconds until a sufficient alarm has been sounded.
