The business of buying and selling stock is handled by some dozen com- mission firms, who are the agents of the shipper and sell to the highest bidder. There are about 30 regular buyers at the Portland Stock Yards, which insures a shipper getting at all times the full value of his stock.
The livestock industry of Oregon has come into its own and is now on a substantial basis, as evidenced by the fact that it represents one-fourth of the total agricultural resources of the state.
Manufactures.
The state is rapidly forging to the front as a manufacturing center and is already the chief manufacturing city in the Pacific Northwest. There are 900 manufacturing establishments here representing an investment of $86,000,000. There are 43,500 factory employes, including shipyard workers, officials and office men, whose wages amount to $50,000,000 per annum. The value of the product last year was $75,000,000, exclusive of the ship industry. The prin- cipal lines of manufacturing are lumber and its by-products, flour, furniture, woolens, harness and saddlery, machinery, fruit canning and meat packing.
Financial Center.
PORTLAND has been the business center of the Oregon country since the earliest days, when the state name included the whole Pacific Northwest. This city has been the Wall Street for this corner of the United States and her banks are the largest and most substantial in the territory. They have a wide reputation for strength and conservative methods. Portland has 26 banks, eight of which are National institutions. In 1919 the bank cltarings amounted to $1,490,607,287.21, and the deposits December 31, 1919, aggregated $166,882,409.19.
Libraries. 1
PORTLAND is the seat of the magnificent new Multnomah County library. This, with five tastefully designed and substantial branch buildings and thir- teen sub-branches, give easy access to its privileges from every portion of the city, its circulating rural libraries throughout the entire county and affiliations with suburban communities make this institution unique among American libraries. A feature of the new building is a series of commodious halls, avail- able without charge for meetings of a civic or development nature. More than fifty organizations regularly avail themselves of this opportunity. The circula- tion in 1919 was nearly 2,000,000 volumes.
Schools and Education.
PORTLAND has an excellent public school system. There are 68 school buildings in the city under the control of the School Board. There are 1,250 teachers and supervisors employed, and 40,131 pupils enrolled, segregated as follows: Elementary schools, 28,995 pupils; high schools, 6,052 pupils; trade schools, 1,423 pupils; night schools, 3,661 pupils. There are numerous private schools of high class and efficiency as well as numerous trade and technical institutions.
The University of Oregon maintains its Medical Department in this city, which ranks as a first-class institution in the teaching of medical science. The largtst Dental College on the Pacific Coast, teaching dentistry and phar- macy, is located here, besides private medical institutions and law schools.
A Public Art Institution fosters the fine arts, and the whole city has an air of culture and refinement.
Reed College is an institution offering courses of the highest order in the arts and sciences. It has a large endowment fund and is fast forging to the front as a school of National prestige.
Music conservatories and Voice Culture schools rank among the highest in the country.
Building Operations.
The past few years have been busy ones in building new structures in Portland, and the advance in apartment houses and hotels has been especially marked. Heavy investments have been made in office buildings of the most modern type. Unusual taste is manifested in even the smaller dwellings found in the suburbs, while each year sees many homes of commanding architecture added to the exclusive districts.

POLK'S PORTLAND 1920 CITY DIRECTORY
Newspapers.
Four daily newspapers are published in Portiand, the Oregonian, Oregon Journal, Evening Telegram and Portland News, with an additional 80 semi-weekly, weekly and monthly publications.
Climate.
Portland has an equable climate. The summers are cool and comfortable, the winters mild and rainy. For a period covering the last thirty years the United States Weather Bureau gives the average annual rainfall as 45 inches, the average yearly temperature was 52.4 degrees. There are no destructive storms, wind or electric.
Churches.
PORTLAND has 213 churches, with church buildings valued at approxi- mately $3,150,000. The Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. have large memberships and splendid buildings of their own. The B'nai B'rith have also a building of their own.
Information.
The State of Oregon maintains an exhibit of Oregon products, agricultural, mineral, and manufactured, on the ground floor of the Oregon building, with an Information Bureau for home seekers.
The Portland Chamber of Commerce maintains several bureaus where the home seeker, investor or tourist may secure information pertaining to any par- ticular subject in which he may be interested.
The Oregon Development Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce is of special interest to the home seeker. Information as to lands and agriculture, and advice is furnished free of charge. The offices are maintained in the Ortgon building at Fifth and Oak streets.
Population 320,656
Since we are entering on a new decade, it is fitting a few remarks be made and a few figures cited regarding the trend of the population of Portiand as disclosed by the records of the City Directory Office, kept for over twenty-five years. All districts of the city have shown a remarkable increase the past ten years, and especially since 1918. Sections that in 1910 were farms and brush tracts have been built up almost solid with residences. Ten years ago in the territory bounded by East 28th, East 55th, East Stark and Sandy Blvd., which includes Laurelhurst, we took the names of 1119 people. Within the same limits this year we took 3506 names. Even old settled communities outside the apart- ment house districts show the same tendency, only in less marked degree. One such is the Sunnyside district between Hawthorne Av. and East Stark, East 30th and East 45th, which returned 2431 names in 1910 and 3035 names ten years later. On the West Side the erection of so many large apartment houses in the last decade has caused that section to show great increases. Thus the twelve blocks between Broadway and 12th, Miil and Hall, gave 269 names in 1900, 463 in 1910, and 985 in 1920. These examples are indicative of the growth and spread of population in almost every section of the city. This is offset to some degree by the extension of business and industry into hitherto residential districts. This is especially true of the north part of the West Side, extending back from the river a distance of from one-quarter of a mile to a miie.
In canvassing for names for the directory not only Portiand but all its environs as well are covered, including Milwaukie, Errol Heights, Parkrose, Multnomah, etc. The actual number of individual names listed in this year's issue of the Portland City Directory is 142,514. This number is exclusive of all names of corporations, partnerships, etc. Of this number approximately 4655 dwell out- side the city boundaries but within the limits of Greater Portland.
In arriving at an estimate of the population we have found after years of experience that 214 is a fair multiple to account for names of wives and children under eighteen years of age not counted. Using such a muitipie gives a total population for Portland and environs at the beginning of 1920 of 320,656. THE PUBLISHERS.
POLK'S Street Avenue and Addition Guide 1920
EXPLANATION
Names of streets and avenues (except the numerical streets) are in alpha- betical order.
Numerical streets, such as 1st, 2d, etc., are at the end of alphabetical list, in numerical order. East 1st, East 2d, etc., follow "East" in alphabetical list in numerical order.
The subjoined names of intersecting streets, with the numbers that occur at each intersection, follow in the order in which they cross. If, for instance, you wish to find 411 Alder street, by reference to this Guide you will see that Alder intersects Tenth at 395, and Eleventh at 415. The place you seek is between those streets.
Where even numbers appear it shows that the street enters only on the even side and does not cross. Two numbers are inserted where there is a break in the line-streets entering each way not being opposite-thus making odd and even numbers out of the usual order.
By city ordinance there is a number for every 25 feet front. This makes 20 numbers to an ordinary block-2 numbers on each side being allowed for the street.
The numbers on the west and north sides of the streets are odd, and on the opposite sides are even. The initial points are at Ankeny street. the Couch line, and Washington street. The east and west initial points are at the Willamette river and Interstate avenue. The numbers given are on the northwest corner of the streets running north and south, south of the Ankeny line, and on the southwest corner north of the Ankeny line; on the southeast corner of the streets running east and west, west of the river, and on the northwest corner east of the river.
The distinction as to numbers north of Ankeny line is made by adding the word "North."
To aid in locating streets we have divided the city as follows, indicating location by abbreviations in parenthesis after each street name:
WEST SIDE-(N. W.) All north of Ankeny. (W.) Between Ankeny and Lincoln. (S. W.) South of Lincoln.
EAST SIDE-(N.) All north of Fremont. (N. E.) From Fremont to E. Ankeny. (E.) Between E. Ankeny and E. Lincoln. (S. E.) From E. Lincoln south. SOUTH EAST-For descripticr of streets with the suffix SE see page 30, E. 42d, etc.
ABERNETHY (S. W.). from the river west to 915 1st and from 9th to 17th.
