Then on to the Sunken Forest of the Columbia, where giant trees are seen beneath the waters; to the pet- rified forest of Tanner Creek, with 200-foot trees; to the abutments of the Bridge of the Gods, and into the Hood River Valley. From there the tourist goes onto Mt. Hood, and its tremendous glaciers can be approach- ed with convenience over splendid roads.

At Hood River the road branches off and circles around the edge of the great mountain. This road, known as "Mt. Hood Loop," is a stretch of enchantment and fails description by word of mouth. It is a haven of ar- tists and poets in its variety of colors wonderfully wrought by the hand of nature.

The Rose Festival

The Rose Festival is an annual Portland event, held the second week of June as a token of esteem for the beautiful flower that blooms in such perfection and abundance here. The soil, climate, sunshine, gentle rain and cool nights all work in producing the billions of delicatedly-colored blossoms that have led other Coast towns to engage in rose culture for the beautification of their streets and gardens. But in no other city does the rose bloom to such a state of perfection and beauty as it does here.

Live Stock Market

Portland is the second largest live stock market of the Pacific Coast, and is growing in importance each year.

The Portland Union Stock Yards has facilities that include twelve acres of pens, with running water, sew- er and feed racks. Six acres are roofed. All facilities are of the most modern type.

There are 24 chutes for unloading a train of 24 cars at one time, and, in addition, there are ten chutes for handling shipments of live stock arriving in trucks.

The business of buying and selling stock is handled by six commission firms, which are the agents of the shipper, and sell to the highest bidder. There are 80 bonded buyers on the Portland Market at the Portland Union Stock Yards, which insures a shipper securing at all times the full value of his stock.

XVII

Manufacturing

Portland is the chief industrial center of the State of Oregon, and has become a city of diversified manu- facturing, with products ranging from oil burners to swimming suits, flour to furniture, and aluminum to pa- per. The 1958 U. S. Census of Manufacturers listed more than 1,800 separate manufacturing establishments employing an average of 61,000 workers for the metropolitan area in that year. Continued industrial expan- sion since that census makes the present estimate of 2,000 manufacturing plants, employing 64,000 workers. The metal-working industry, which includes the production of pig aluminum, machinery and equipment electrical appliances, foundry products and other similar items, is Portland's leading industry from the stand- point of employment, being followed by lumber and timber products, food manufacturing, paper and allied pro- ducts, and textiles and apparel. Other industries of importance in the Portland area are furniture production, printing and publishing, and chemical manufacturing. A large number of products manufactured within Port- land's industrial area receive national and world-wide distribution. Every day sees new advances in the way of diversification of production in this area, additional utilization of resources, and increased manufacturing by local industries.

Financial Center

Portland has been the business center of the Oregon country since the earliest days, when the State name included the whole Pacific Northwest. The city is the Wall Street for this corner of the U. S., and its banks are the largest and most substantial in the territory. They have a wide reputation for strength and conserv- ative methods. Portland has six banks and trust companies (with branches), some of which are national insti- tutions. Band debits in 1961 were $13,416,361.

Here are located national houses with branches in Seattle and Spokane managed out of Portland. Portland has one of the largest wholesale drug houses on the Pacific Coast, and the largest dry goods firm in the Pacific Northwest.

Headquarters of the grocery distributing, dry goods, knitting and jobbing industries are here. This is the center of the textile wholesale trade, and the distributing point for the automotive trades, as well as for agri- cultural implements, hardware, drugs and industrial machinery.

Library

Portland is the seat of the Multnomah County Library. This, with 16 branches, gives easy access to its privileges from every portion of the city. Its circulating rural libraries throughout the entire county, and af- filiations with suburban communities, make this institution unique among American Libraries. A feature of the main building is a series of commondious halls, available without charge for meetings of a civic or devel- opment nature. More than 100 organizations regularly avail themselves of this opportunity. The circulation in a recent year was 2,200,443 volumes; the registered borrowers. 153.680.
