INTRODUCTION AND GENERAL INDEX
R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of more than 1,000 city, county, state and national Directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1964 edition of the Providence City Directory.
Confidence in the continued growth of Providence's industry, population and wealth, and in the advance - ment of its civic and social activities, will be maintained as sections of this Directory are consulted, for the Directory is a mirror truly reflecting Providence in the world.
The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S Directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in Directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and having had the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Providence Directory will fulfill its mission as a source of authentic information pertaining to the city.
Three Major Departments
The three major departments are arranged in the following order: --
I. THE BUYERS' GUIDE constitutes the first major department of the Directory, printed on yellow paper. In the first section of this department, grouped under appropriate headings, are included the adver- tisements and business cards of firms and individuals desiring to make a complete presentation of their prod- ucts or services. Following this is the Classified Business section, which embraces a list of the names and addresses of all business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appro- priate headings -- a catalog of all the activities of the city. The Buyers' Guide represents reference adver- tising at its best, and merits the attention of all buyers and sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a large commercial and industrial center like Providence, the necessity of having this kind of in- formation up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common interme- diary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily activities of the commercial, indus- trial and professional world.
II. THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the second major department, printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Providence, and the name, official personnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.
III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on green pa - per, is the third major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the list- ing of telephone numbers.
Municipal Publicity
The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Providence.
The Providence Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Providence City Directory, a Directory Library is main- tained in the offices of the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 1,000 Directory Libraries installed in cities and towns throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose supervision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recognition by those progressive business and profes- sional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the City Directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

Providence is located at the head of Narragansett Bay, which offers one of the finest ports on the U. S. Coastal line, whether on the Atlantic or the Pacific. The Bay not only is suited for shipping, but it furnishes recreational playgrounds for Rhode Islanders and people from all parts of this country and the world. New- port, which is located at the entrance to the Bay, has long been famous as a resort and showplace. Narragan- sett, on the opposite side of the Bay entrance from Newport, also is a well-known summer resort. The fish- ing industry thrives on many parts of the Bay, which yields an abundant supply of fish and shellfish. Many eating places on the Rhode Island shores of Narragansett Bay are well-known for shore dinners, clambakes and Rhode Island johnny cakes.
PROVIDENCE A New - Old City
New in Spirit and Vigor-
Old in History and Tradition
State Capitol Building, Providence, R. I.
Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, who received a deed for the land from the Narra- gansett Indians. The primeval forests were gradually cleared from the hills, and what is now a thriving city gradually developed during the intervening centuries. The fame and importance of Providence has given it a high place among the nation's cities. The name of Roger Williams will always be perpetuated in Providence because it was here for the first time that a charter proclaimed a doctrine of non-interference with the re -. ligious beliefs of the people. This doctrine of religious freedom has had much to do with the spirit and growth of the city. People of many nationalities and diverse religious faiths live together in tolerance and mutual respect.
The forefathers of many families which still reside in Rhode Island contributed greatly to the original enterprise of the city and state. These early inhabitants established mills, factories, shipping yards, counting houses, and sailing fleets by which means Providence became an important commercial and industrial center of the Thirteen Colonies. Its prestige has been maintained and broadened so that today metropolitan Provi- dence includes some of the largest single industries in the country and is the largest center in the world for certain industrial products.
