Three Major Departments

Thethreemajor departments are arranged in the following order :-

I. THE YELLOW PAGES constitute the second major department of the Directory. This embraces a complete list of the names and addresses of the business and professional concerns of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under appropriate headings-a catalog of all the activities of the city. Preceding this cata- log, likewise grouped under appropriate headings, are the advertisements and business cards of firms and in- dividuals desiring to present a more complete list of their products or services than is possible in the catalog itself. The Yellow Pages represent reference advertising at its best, and merit the attention of all buyers and Sellers seeking sources of supply or markets for goods. In a busy and diversified community like Providence the necessity of having this kind of information up-to-date and always immediately available, is obvious. The Directory is the common intermediary between buyer and seller, and plays an important role in the daily ac- tivities of the commercial, industrial and professional world.

II., THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents and business and professional concerns is the third major department printed on white paper. This is the only record in existence that aims to show the name, marital status, occupation and address of each adult resident of Providence, and the name, official per - sonnel, nature and address of each firm and corporation in the city.

III. THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, on green paper, is the fourth major department. In this section the numbered streets are arranged in numerical order, followed by the named streets in alphabetical order; the numbers of the residences and business concerns are arranged in numerical order under the name of each street, and the names of the householders and concerns are placed opposite the numbers. The names of the intersecting streets appear at their respective crossing points on each street. Special features of this section are the designation of tenant-owned homes and the listing of telephone numbers of homes and places of business.

Community Publicity

The Directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the city, depicting in unbiased terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as a manufacturing site and as an educational cen- ter. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the Directory in Direc- tory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Providence.

Form of Government-Under the New Charter for the City of Providence, approved by referendum on Nov. 7, 1939, elective officers are a mayor, to be elected at large, and members of the council, which body consists of 26 councilmen, two from each of the 13 wards as the same are now constituted. The Charter became effective in its entirety on Jan. 1, 1941.

Population 248,674 (1950 U. S. Census). Predominating nationalities in city: Native American, Italian, Irish, Russian, Canadian, English, Polish and Swedish.

Area-18.91 square miles.

Altitude-Maximum, 252.99 feet; Minimum 3.46 feet (above sea level).

Parks and Playgrounds-33 parks covering a total of 814 acres; 61 playgrounds covering 267 acres.

Assessed Valuation-$943,035,783 (Sept. 1959) .

Tax Rate-$3.90 per $100 on real estate and tangible personal property; 40¢ per $100 on intangible per- sonal property.

Bonded Debt-$47,661,909.55 (Sept. 30, 1959).

Trade Area-Retail area has radius of 30 miles, and population of 1,500,000.

Hotels-19: Principal downtown hotels are Sheraton-Biltmore, and Crown.

Railroads-1: New York, New Haven & Hartford.

Air Transport-The State of Rhode Island owns one of the largest and very finest airports in the U. S. It has 4 runways, one of which is 200 feet wide and 5,460 feet long. The other 3 runways are 150 feet wide and 5,000 feet long. They permit the landing and departure of the largest planes with the greatest possible safety and convenience. The field is equipped with radar, all lighting facilities. Air lines, including American Air- lines, Eastern Air Lines, National Air Lines and United Air Lines, give superior trunk-line, passenger, mail, express and freight service from the airport, which is located at Hillsgrove, a 20-minute run by automobile from the heart of the city. Mohawk and Alleghany Airlines began service in March-April 1960. A new terminal is being erected at Hillsgrove. The State recently opened the North Central Airport in Smithfield. Northeast Air Lines operated scheduled service from this airport.

Amusements-Largest auditorium in city seats 8,000 people. 14 theatres, with total seating capacity of 20,000 people. A new State-owned auditorium seating 2,400 is now in use.

Hospitals-8: Recent additions have increased the facilities.

Education-Number of public school buildings, 90 including 4 high and 8 junior high. Number of pupils in public schools, 28,803. Average number of teachers in public schools, 1,183. Value of public school property, $20,500,080.

Libraries-Approximately 2,000,000 volumes in the 11 libraries of the city. An addition to the Public Li- brary was recently completed. The Providence Public Library maintains a library for the special use of business interests, including files of city and 'phone directories from all leading cities in the U. S. and from many smaller communities; commercial indices; and technical volumes relating to many kinds of business.

City Statistics-Total street mileage: Platted streets, 421, with 356 miles paved. Miles of gas mains, 835.4; sewers, 442; motorbus lines, 250.94. Capacity of water works (municipal), 41,257,000,000 gallons; daily average pumpage 40,440,000 gallons; value of plant, $13,853,515. Fire department employs 519 men, with the following equipment and facilities: 54 pieces of apparatus, 30 companies in 16 stations, 1 fire alarm building, 1 repair shop, 1 training school and 3 rescue squads. Police department has 83 officers, 675 men, 1 station, traffic division, detective division, and 85 pieces of motorized equipment, including 26 motorcycles. All fire and police vehicles are equipped with two-way radio.

Providence is located at the head of Narragansett Bay, which offers one of the finest ports on the U. S. coastal line, whether on the Atlantic or the Pacific. The Bay not only is suited for shipping, but it furnishes recreational playgrounds for Rhode Islanders and people from all parts of this country and the world. New- port, which is located at the entrance to the Bay, has long been famous as a resort and show place. Narra- gansett, on the opposite side of the Bay entrance from Newport, also is a well-known summer resort. The fishing industry thrives on many parts of the Bay, which yields an abundant supply of fish and shellfish. Many eating places on the Rhode Island shores of Narragansett Bay are well-known for shore dinners, clambakes and Rhode Island johnny cakes.

Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, who received a deed for the land from the Narra- gansett Indians. The primeval forests were gradually cleared from the hills, and what is now a thriving city gradually developed during the intervening centuries. The fame and importance of Providence has given it a high place among the nation's cities. The name of Roger Williams will always be perpetuated in Providence because it was here for the first time that a charter proclaimed a doctrine of noninterference with the reli- gious beliefs of the people. This doctrine of religious freedom has had much to do with the spirit and growth of the city. People of many nationalities and diverse religious faiths live together in tolerance and mutual re- spect.

The forefathers of many families which still reside in Rhode Island contributed greatly to the original enterprise of the city and state. These early inhabitants established mills, factories, shipping yards, counting houses, and sailing fleets by which means Providence became an important commercial and industrial center of the Thirteen Colonies. Its prestige has been maintained and broadened so that today metropolitan Providence includes some of the largest single industries in the country and is the largest center in the world for certain industrial products.

First Baptist Church

Providence is of interest historically by reason of its fine old houses and public edifices which are fine examples of Colonial architectures. For example, there are the First Baptist Meeting House, built in 1775; the old State House, the old Market Building in Market Square, and private residences too numerous to men- tion, which principally are located on the hill. It is safe to say that there are more fine and varied examples of residential architecture in Providence than in any other city in the U. S .; each one a type of the best in architecture covering the period from the Colonial days to the present.
