INTRODUCTION.
N EWPORT COUNTY is certainly, genealogically considered, the Queen of the State, and we regret that the records of Newport city should have met the fate they did in 1779. The compiler is proud of this volume, and places it in the hands of the public with feelings of greater confidence than he expects to the others, for here he can produce nearer complete the record that now has become of great value.
It is useless to repeat the perplexities, difficulties and annoyances that have met the compiler at every step in his work. To produce this work none save those who have had experience in the record office can form a just idea.
It has been a source of pride with him to realize that the work has become a success. and is fully appreciated by an intelligent reading public and by those interested in the matter arranged in these pages.
CONDITION OF THE RECORDS.
Portsmouth has a few items recorded in the first book of wills, deeds, pro- bate proceedings, etc. Beside this, there are four books devoted to this mat- ter: the third needs binding, the others in good condition and writing good.
Newport has a transcript of the first books. and from whence our copy was made and to which it refers. Beside this are books I. and II., which brings the matter up to 1850; writing good.
Middletown has but one book, in good order.
New Shoreham has recorded the matter in 11 books, the first two of which are in that devoted to town meetings and probate, and the others in those of land evidence. The first two books need binding; others good, writing plain.
Jamestown has but one book which needs binding, the first pages of which are very much worn and torn.
Little Compton has had four books for this matter. The first was copied carefully, and the transcript compared with the original. The other books, 2 and 4, are in fine order. No. 3 has been missing from the Clerk's Office for years.
Tiverton has five square books; in first and second writing faint, others clear.
THE NAMES OF THE TOWNS.
Portsmouth was an original town, settled in 1638. Indian name, Pocasset. "At a quarter meeting of the first of ye 5th month. 1639, it was agreed to call this town Portsmouth." At the "Generall Courte" at "Nieuport," 12th of 1st month, 1640, the name of Portsmouth was confirmed. Named from a town in the south of England of that name and a celebrated seaport at that time (1638).
Newport was an original town, settled in 1639; named because it was a new port, to distinguish it from the old port at Portsmouth.
Middletown was incorporated June 16, 1743; taken from Newport. So
4
INTRODUCTION.
named because it was the middle town on the island lying between Newport and Portsmouth.
New Shoreham incorporated November 4, 1672. Admitted to the Colony as Block Island May 4, 1664. New Shoreham. so-called, "as signes of our unity and likeness to many ports of our native country."
Jamestowu was incorporated November 4, 1678. Named in honor of King James II. Indiau name Quonouoqutt (Conanicut).
Little Compton was one of the five towns received from Massachusetts January 27, 1746-47. Named from Leocompton, Eng. Indian name Seacon- net.
Tiverton was one of the five towus received from Massachusetts January 27, 1746-47. Named from Tiverton, England. £
Indian name Pocasset. We think there is an error here in saying that the Indian name was Po- casset, when Portsmouth, across the river or strait, was called the same. In all probability the Indian word had very near the same sound.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS.
We still have to thank our dear friends again for their continued confi- dence and kindness towards us as well as for their interest in the success of this work. Particularly do we feel grateful in view of the conduct of certain selfish (we will not write men) parties who saw in our long and dangerous illness of last winter a chance to work us a deadly injury, at the same time to honor us (in case of fatality) with a pauper's funeral. Words cannot ex- press our contempt for this conduct, and words cannot convey our heartfelt gratitude to those dear friends who prevented such a deadly wrong beiug done us.
The General Assembly of the State has again been liberal, and has be- stowed on the work a liberal subscription, for which we thank them, and also the Honorable Committee who favorably reported upon so desirable a mat- ter to us and so vital to the success of this enterprise.
We also thank the public for the favor in which they received our pre- vious volumes, and for their good wishes towards us in the future.
PLEASE OBSERVE.
I. That the marriages are given in duplicate, but that nothing beyoud the book and page of the original town record, the names and date are given where the bride is placed first. That under the groom the notes are so extended as to include all the items of the record from whence it was taken. The reader will consider the bride being placed first, therefore, as merely an index for him to consult the other entry in its proper place. Should they disagree, give the groom the preference, if possible. That the births and deaths are grouped so as to better enable the reader to see at a glance the names and dates in their natural order of the members of the family.
II. That the figures at the left of the name is the book and page of the original town record, the hyphen separating the two apart.
III. That the indexes for all the towns treated in this work are placed in the fore part of the book. No one need look farther than the index to dis- cover whether the mother he is in search of is to be found within the covers. These indexes are so constructed as to show:
(a) The names occurring in their natural order.
(b) The names occurring promiscuously, and
(c) The places mentioned in the text.
IV. That each town is separate and distinct in itself, and the indexes are confined strictly to each town, but all are placed in the fore part of the work for the more handy reference of the reader. Should the reader want
5
INTRODUCTION.
his copy rebound, he can do so, and the indexes can be differently placed with no injury to the others.
V. The spelling of the given names are as they stand on the record in many instances, and when they are not far wrong. This accounts for the variety of spelling iu this work.
VI. The acts incorporating the towns of Middletown, New Shoreham, Jamestown, Little Compton and Tiverton, and placed before the matter itself in that particular town.
VII. Every convenience that would aid the reader and everything that would naturally perplex him, has been carefully studied. While not claiming perfection for our work, we would say that we have spared no pains in order to make it as simple as possible, and yet be comprehensive. How well we have succeeded in this must be left, however, to the reader himself to say.
VIII. We have not changed dates here given, but we give it just as it stands on the record itself. We have observed, however, that the Scotch year is more general in this country than in any others that have come to our notice.
A REQUEST.
It would be a great favor to the compiler of this work if every reader who consults these pages would copy out and send to him at Providence, R. I., copies from his family record in the Bible, or where else the same may be recorded, or any other information he may be possessed of, in order to make these records in the future as complete as possible. It makes no difference whether the party resides in the State of Rhode Island or not. If they can connect with Rhode Island ancestry it is sufficient. While these matters may seem trifling, yet they may become of incalculable value in the future, and therefore we urgently desire that the Vital Records of Rhode Island may be made complete and that errors, wherever found, may be pointed out and cor- rected as soon as possible.
