The benevolence of the church has been large for its financial ability, and com- prehensive, and uniform. Rhode Island College was transferred from Warren to Providence by reason of generous offers of aid by the people of the First Church, and received its new name by reason of added benefactions from the same source. Since all the presidents of Brown University, and many of the professors, have been members of this church, in the very nature of things the church has always been deeply and helpfully interested in the cause of Christian education. The University and the Newton Theological Institution have been especially remembered in its benefactions. The objects of its benevolence have always been very numerous. Its list last year contained twenty-eight. Those which have received the largest attention and support have been foreign and home missions and the Rhode Island Baptist State Convention. To this last object the church has for many years contributed more than one-seventh of all that the Rhode Island churches have given for the support of the work. While it has given to home missions a large recognition, and has ever been warmly and generously sympathetic towards this important work, which was never so important, and varied, and imperative as now, it has been especially active in the support of foreign missions, and in the providence of God prominently, and in some sense officially, identified with the American Baptist Missionary Union.

Dr. Gano was one of the three New England delegates to the convention in Philadelphia, in 1814, which organized the Baptist Foreign Missionary Society

in this country, and labored zealously for its enlargement and usefulness so long as he lived. Dr. Wayland preached his memorable missionary sermon on "The Moral Dignity of the Missionary Enterprise" in Boston, in 1823, when he was twenty-seven years of age, and when he came, four years later, to Brown University and the First Baptist Church, he brought with him an intelligent devotion to missions, which permeated both church and college. Dr Pattison retired from his second pastorate of the church to accept the secretaryship of the Foreign Missionary Society, to which he had been called. One of the dea- cons of the church, Richard E. Eddy, was elected to the responsible position of treasurer of the Missionary Union in 1847, and held the office for eight years. Dr. Granger received from the church a long leave of absence in 1852, that he might be one of the deputation to make an official visit to the mission fields in India. Dr. Caldwell delivered by appointment the very able and remarkably appropriate sermon at the 50th anniversary of the Missionary Union held in Philadelphia in 1864, and six other pastors of the church have been called upon to preach the annual sermon before the Missionary Union. Four members of the church have been presidents of the Missionary Union, and three members have served as chairman of the Board of Managers. One of the pastors has been twice elected unanimously corresponding secretary, but felt compelled to decline the high office each time by reason of the imperative claims of the pastorate upon him. He has endeavored to make amends for his refusal to comply with the requests of the Board of Managers by serving on the Execu- tive Committee for seventeen years, a part of the time as its presiding officer.

It should be added that the Rhode Island Baptist Mite Society, one of the first missionary societies organized by the women of our churches, was formed in 1806 in Dr. Gano's parlor by the young women of the church, and that during its long and beneficent career until the present time its leading officers, and many of its warm supporters, have been women in the First Baptist Church. A part of its early offerings was designated to missions in India. The Women's Baptist Foreign Missionary Society (an organization of comparatively recent origin) has had for its president for fifteen years a member of this church, Miss Sarah C. Durfee, who is now honorary president for life, and two other mem- bers are vice-presidents, viz .: Mrs. W. H. P. Faunce and Miss Mary A. Greene, Miss Greene being also the attorney of the society. The women of the church have held no second place to the men in their obedient devotion to the final com- mand of Christ, which has for its scope the evangelization of the whole world.

Moreover, the progress of the work of the denomination in foreign lands was recorded by Prof. William Gammell, a member of this church, who published, in addition to a "Life of Roger Williams" and other works, a "History of Bap- tist Missions," which contained an accurate and comprehensive survey of our mission fields at the date of its publication. Such has been the conspicuous re- lation of this church to the cause of foreign missions, a relation not unworthy of record even in an outline history. For many years also it has had represen- tatives from its own number on the foreign field. It has seven at the present time.

THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH.

The early history of the church has been given, in greater or less detail, by all biographers of Roger Williams, and by all historians, sacred and secular, who have treated the founding of the State of Rhode Island, the development of religious liberty and the beginning of the Baptist denomination in this country. Numerous publications have also been issued pertaining to the history of the church, which have been prepared for special occasions, or called forth by special circumstances. Among them are the following :-

"A History of the First Baptist Church of Christ in Providence, R. I., being the oldest Baptist Church in America," prepared by Rev. John Stanford, Pastor, and published in the Baptist Annual Register, London, 1801 and 1802, pp. 793- 833.

A Review of a Report presented to the Warren Baptist Association in 1849. This Review was read to the Association in 1850, establishing the claim of the First Church in Providence to be the First Baptist Church in America. Pre- pared by Dr. James N. Granger, Dr. Alexis Caswell, and Prof. William Gam- mell. Published in pamphlet.

An account of the Churches in Rhode Island, prepared at the request of the R. I. Baptist State Convention by Dr. Henry Jackson, pastor of the Central Baptist Church in Newport, and published by vote of the Convention, 1854.

"The True Roger Williams," an address delivered by request by Dr. Henry M. King, Pastor Emeritus, at a union service held by the church and the Rhode Island Historical Society, July 28, 1907, which day was set apart as "Roger Williams Sunday" in Old Home Week.

The early records of the church have been lost. The records now in the possession of the church commence in 1774, more than a century and a third after its origin. A few years since, by the request of the Standing Committee, the late Mr. Charles F. Wilcox prepared a card-catalogue of the members of the church, making it as complete as possible at that time. He himself traced his pedigree back to Roger Williams, Chad Brown, and Gregory Dexter. He was deeply interested in the history of the church, and had a natural fondness for historical research, and his labors were characterized by great thoroughness and accuracy. He was eminently qualified for the service asked of him. He sought information from all quarters, wherever obtainable, and labored pa- tiently and con amore for a period of several years in the performance of the task assigned him. The church is under immense obligation to him, for his labors have made the publication of this historical catalogue possible.

Referring to his sources of information, Mr. Wilcox said: "The names of members prior to 1774 (the beginning of the official records of the church ex- tant) are taken from historical documents, and from certain lists," which he mentioned. "They consist of the male members of the original organization in 1638, the pastors from the beginning of the church, the male members who in 1732 signed a certain agreement as given in Guild's "Manning and Brown Uni- versity," p. 154, and those members of the church in 1774 whose connection with it commenced at various dates from 1730 onward."

Among the lists mentioned is one, in Record Book No. 1, of persons received by letter during Dr. Manning's pastorate, and a second of those baptized by him. On the 24th of December, 1778, a meeting was held in Pawtucket, where a part of the members resided, and another meeting on January 2d, 1779, in Providence, to which all members of the church were invited, for the purpose of renewing their covenant obligations to the church. The members had been much scattered, and probably their allegiance to the church had in some in- stances been weakened, by the war of the Revolution. A list is preserved of those who attended the meetings, of those who were absent but expressed a

12

desire to remain in fellowship with the church, and of those who did not wish to retain their membership. Still another list is preserved of members present at a meeting held August 4, 1791, when it was voted, 62 to 4, not to insist upon the imposition of hands as a prerequisite to church membership.

The existing records of the church seem not, at the first, to have been care- fully kept, admissions, dismissions, and deaths sometimes failing to be recorded down to the beginning of the 19th century. Several lists of members were made from time to time on sheets of paper stitched together, and in blank books, separate from the records, in some of which names appear which are not in the records. All of these lists Mr. Wilcox examined carefully, and compared with one another and with the record-books, so as to make the register as com- plete as possible and to avoid entering the name of the same person twice. These lists bear date of 1775, 1793, 1805, 1812, and 1822. Since that time printed lists of members have been issued by the church bearing the following dates: August I, 1832; February 6, 1842; April 4, 1844; November 10, 1850; February 10, 1855; December 10, 1861; November 25, 1867; September 25, 1873; May 15, 1880; November 15, 1884; September 1, 1888; July 1, 1890; November 18, 1892; February 28, 1895; April 16, 1900; and September 1, 1905.

Mr. Wilcox sought and obtained additional information from the family con- nections of members, from the printed vital statistics of the city of Providence, and from other reliable sources. No pains were spared to make the list of names as full and as accurate as he was able. The number of names catalogued is about four thousand. The number of persons connected with the church from the beginning must be in the neighborhood of five thousand.

The card-catalogue has been carefully compared with all lists and church- records for the purpose of verification, and some names of members have been discovered in historical documents which had escaped Mr. Wilcox's search. Other names and the fact of their membership will undoubtedly come to light in the future. Mr. Wilcox concluded his labors January 1, 1904. The cata- logue has been brought down to October 1, 1908. The number of members en- rolled at this date is 734. Special effort has been made to record family re- lationships, and to recognize those, so far as they are known, who trace their ancestry to the founders of the church.

A noteworthy feature of the Historical Catalogue is the large number of Italian names which it contains. During the last twelve years the pastor and people have taken a deep interest in work among the Italians in the city of Providence, and about one hundred converts of this nationality have been received into the church on profession of their personal faith in Christ and entrance upon a new life.

An appendix follows the alphabetical list, referring to the correct date of the organization of the church, and justifying the change from 1639 to 1638.

A second appendix is added upon "The Original Members of the Church," which will justify the introduction of a few names not appearing heretofore in any list.
