JOHNSTON DIRECTORY.
In thirty-two years the excellent management of the Northwestern is no more conspicuously marked than that of IS90.
It gained in new business in its Home State fifty-seven per cent. more than all its competitors combined. Its death ratio was but 0.97 of the mean amount at risk, phenomenally low for a Company thirty-two years old, especially as com- pared with other Companies. The average rate of all Companies reporting to the Massachusetts Department in 1889 was 1.32. Its ratio of " Expenses and Taxes to New Business " was LESS, and its ratio of " Excess of Income over Disbursements " LARGER than any other Company. Although it paid policyholders in dividends nearly a million dollars, it added $884,665 to its surplus, thirty-seven per cent. more than the Company having the next largest increase, and nearly thirty-eight per cent. of the total increase of fifty Com- panies combined, and twenty-nine times the average of forty- nine Companies combined; which clearly demonstrates the Company's ability to make FUTURE dividends, as usual, AHEAD of its competitors, and places the Company in a position attained by no similar institution, notwithstanding the industrious circulation of anonymous attacks to show by FALSE RATIOS and DELUSIVE FIGURES that the Northwestern's dividends have been falling off. The fact is, the Northwestern's dividends on individual policies show a continual INCREASE and are Now larger than ever before.
