U S NAVAL RESERVE

The Naval Reserve organization in the Providence metropolitan area com- prises Organized Surface Battalion 1-8 and Organized Submarine Battalion 1-12. When at full strength they will have a total membership of about 150 officers and 1400 enlisted men. First meeting of the Reserve here was Sept. 18, 1946


Headquarters for both battalions is the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center at Fields Point, in buildings once part of the Walsh-Kaiser shipyard. Alterations to the shipyard buildings were undertaken under a con- tract awarded Nov 18, 1947, to Bennett Stewart Co., Boston. The contract price of $317,000 was the largest sum expended on a Naval Reserve Training Center in the New England States.


Two ships were delivered to the sur- face battalion in 1947. They were the LST-1086, used for dockside training only, and the LCI (L)-633, employed in both dockside and cruise training. The submarine Kingfish was assigned the submarine battalion for delivery in 1948.


Comdr Donald J Hackett is inspector instructor and officer in charge of Na- val Reserve facilities, both ships and training centers, in Providence, Woon- socket and Pawtucket. Lieut Comdr Wilfred B Tatro is assistant inspector instructor and is officer in charge of the Providence Training Center

U S MARINE CORPS RESERVE


The Third 155-mm. Howitzer Bat- talion of the U S Marine Corps Re- serve was activated on July 15, 1947, and is quartered at the U S Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center at Fields Point. The battalion has an authorized strength of 33 officers and 476 men. By Dec 31, 1948, the bat- talion was recruited to nearly 90 per cent of its authorized strength.


Maj Wm G Lind jr, USMCR, is the battalion commander. The inspector- instructor is Claude S Sanders jr, USMC, and the assistant inspector-in- structor is Lieut Edmund Valdes, USMC.
